MVC: SIU advances

By Jerry Palm - March 02, 2007

The last three minutes of this game took 30 because Drake was fouling to try to cut into an 11-point lead. That didn't work, but you can't blame them for trying. SIU won 71-59.

Not surprisingly, SIU cleaned up in the league postseason awards. Chris Lowery was coach of the year, Jamaal
Tatum was MVP and Randal Falker was defensive player of the year.

The Valley has brought out the big guns to ref this tournament. We had Jim Burr in this game and Tim Higgins is doing the next one. That doesn't mean the games will be well officiated, just that a couple of the older guys will be working them.

During Championship Weeks, you play through nagging injuries. Apparently that goes for the cheerleaders too. One SIU cheerleader was out there with walking boot on her leg. I'm pretty sure she didn't do any backflips though.

SIU has a great following, and the horde is here. Each of the four teams in this session gets a quarter of the arena and their section is pretty full. Drake's section is more empty, but you wonder if some of their fans had trouble getting here due to the storms in Iowa.
