MVC: SIU-Creighton preview

By Jerry Palm - March 04, 2007

The championship game is about to get underway here between Southern Illinois and Creighton.

Creighton can take any suspense away from selection Sunday by winning today, although I think they'll get in even if they lose. The Jays' seniors took over against Missouri St, scoring 65 of their 75 points. They'll have to step it up again today.

There's not a whole lot of love with these two. They've been the top two teams in this league for a number of years and it's developed into quite a rivalry. Creighton coach Dana Altman is still looking for his first win against SIU coach Chris Lowery. They came close in both regular season meetings, but couldn't finish. The Jays have played better than SIU here this weekend, and I think that will continue today.

Before the game, some SIU fan got to take a half-court shot for $50,000. He shot a two-handed set shot and bounced it just off the front iron.

The PA announcer just asked us to give a "big Missouri Valley Conference welcome to Gus Johnson and Clark Kellogg (the CBS announcers doing the game)". You can tell the league is excited to be on CBS.

I met Clark before the game. He's always been one of my favorite announcers. Nice guy too.
