MVC: What a finish!

By Jerry Palm - March 02, 2007

Missouri St held off a valiant effort by Wichita St to win 67-64 and advance to play Creighton tomorrow night.

WIth the game tied, Blake Ahearn and Deven Mitchell hit two free throws each, sandwiched around a missed three pointer by WSU's Matt Braeuer. After the teams traded stops, Braeuer hit one free throw to cut the lead to three.

Nathan Bilyeu drove the lane and dished to Mitchell for an easy layup to extend the lead to five, but Karon Bradley of Wichita St came down quickly and hit another three, the Shockers' 13th of the game to bring the lead back to two with 49.3 seconds left.

Tyler Chaney missed a runner in the lane for the Bears, but Bilyeu grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled with 15 seconds left. Bilyeu only hit one of two though, giving the Shockers one last chance.

Braeuer got a good look at a three as time expired, but it was long, and the Bears advance.

If we have three more games as good as this one, I'm going to need to have a medic standing by. I'm not sure my heart can take it.

Time for a cold beer and a nap before we get back after it tomorrow.

Some will view Creighton-Mizz State as an elimination game, and that's too bad. Both teams can make good cases on why they belong, regardless of tomorrow's outcome. Creighton swept Mizz State during the regular season; can they make 3 out of 3? Creighton has the sweep, but Mizz St has the win over Wisconsin.
