SEC: Georgia and Florida Tip in 20

By David Scott - March 09, 2007

We're about 20 minutes from tip in the opener of the night session here at the Georgia Dome where No. 1 seed (East) Florida (26-5) meets No. 5 Seed (East) Georgia (17-12). The Gators are the two-time defending SEC Tourney champs (beating Kentucky in 2005 and South Carolina in 2006). Billy Donovan's crew has played in three staright finals with its lone loss coming in the 2004 finals to Kentucky.

. . . Florida game notes are here and Georgia game notes are here.

. . . The Florida-Georgia games officials include Crew Chief "TV" Teddy Valentine, Tome Eades, Bruce Benedict and substitue official Doug Sirmons.

. . . Georgia lost both regular season meetings with the Gators - 67-51 on January 6 and 71-61 on February 7. Florida leads the all-time series 98-94 and has won the last six straight. It's the first meeting in the SEC Tourney for the two prorgams since 1989.

. . . Probable starting line-ups look like this:

Georgia has Takais Brown, Steve Newman, Sundiata Gaines, Levi Stukes and Billy Humphrey.

Florida has Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, Al Horford, Lee Humphrey and Taurean Green

. . . On our way to courtside we caught Arkansas coach Stan Heath lobbying broadcaster Tim Brando HARD to give his Hogs some on-air love for Arkansas' NCAA Tournament's crednetials.

Ole Miss coach, Andy Kennedy, whose Rebels play in the nightcap just walked down press row as well.

. . . Florida has four of its five starters who are currently members of the 1,000 point-scorers club (Noah, Brewer, Green and Horford) and Lee Humphrey needs 24 points to reach the mileston. Florida's game notes indicate they have not been able to confirm whether this has ever happened before but it's highly doubtful.

. . . Georgia advances to the second day of play in the SEC Tourney for the first time in three years and only the third time in the past ten. No Bulldog team has been to the semifinals since 1997.
