Pan Am Trials: Put Some Mustard On It

By David Scott - July 12, 2007

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The trials are being conducted with what ESPN.com's Andy Katz (seated to the right of the Hang Time perch, along with SI.com's Luke Winn and the grand-daddy of us all, Dick "Hoops" Weiss) has termed a "mustard yellow" international ball. The regulation FIBA ball appears to be the Penalty 7.4. The panels are slightly different on the ball being used with alternating yellow and brown sections.

. . . We're not going to hide the fact that we're pulling hard for VCU's Eric Maynor, the King of March Madness, 2007. VCU's feisty guard who knocked Duke out of the first round of the tournament with his heroics, appears to be right at home with these elite players. He's been matched up against Syracuse's Eric Devendorf.

. . . Indiana's DJ White looks to be a bit meatier up top as does his opposite number who he's been facing early on, Joey Dorsey of Memphis.

. . . Regular college referees are calling the action for USA Basketball and it appears to be a Big East dominated crew as Art Hyland, the league's Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officiating is in attendance, standing behind the benches watching HIS guys stay sharp for the season.

. . . The Douglas B Gardner Integrated Athletic Center where the trials are being conducted opened in 2005 and is a memorial to three ex-Haverford athletes who were killed in the World Trade Center on 9/11/01. It is the first intercollegiate athletic building in the country to earn LEED certification, meaning it is a "green buidling". We seem to recall the new UConn football facility in Storrs also haveing some level of LEED certification.

Haverford was the first Quaker college in America and until 1980 was a an all male institution. Alumni include super agent Arn Tellem, Michale Jackson attorney, Mark Geragos and columnist Dave Barry. Chevy Chase reportedly attended the school for one semester.
