Pan Am Trials: Welcome To Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Welcome to the campus of Division III Haverford College where the Team USA, Pan American Games trials are just underway. Thirty-two collegiate players from around the nation are gathered for the tryouts, with a 16-member team set to be announced sometime after the final session on Saturday afternoon (or Sunday morning). That 16 will be trimmed to 12 Thursday before the team leaves for DC in advacne of its trip to Rio.

Villanova head coach, Jay Wright, (his campus is three miles from the Haverford gym) is the head coach of this team and his joined as assistants by Alabama's Mark Gottfried and Yale's James Jones. Court coaches in attendance include Lafayette's Fran O'Hanlon, Embry Riddle University's Steve Ridder and Central Missouri's Kim Anderson. Also in attendance is Syracuse head coach, Jim Boeheim (the chair of Team USA's Collegiate Committee), Temple's Fran Dunphy and other coaches who have players participating including Washington State's Tony Bennett, who has two players here in Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver.

Headline players (roster here) include Georgetown's Roy Hibbert, Kansas's Sherron Collins, Marquette's Dominic James, Michigan State's Drew Neitzel, VCU March Madness hero, Eric Maynor, North Carolina's Wayne Ellington, Memphis's Joey Dorsey, Indiana's DJ White and Alabama's Alonzo Gee. Virginia's Sean Singletary was scheduled to be here, but decided against participating.

The first scrimmage of the tryouts is underway and the white team is made up of, Marquette's Jerel McNeal, NC State's Brandon Costner, Hibbert, Villanova's Scottie Reynolds and Texas A&M's Josh Carter. The blue team is made up of LSU's Tasmin Mitchell, Tennessee's Chris Lofton, Collins, Maryland's James Gist and Ellington.
