Pan Ammers Plunder

By David Scott - July 27, 2007

Just a quick update on the Pan Am Games which are taking place in Rio De Janiero and include a team of the United State's best college players.

Coach Jay Wright's squad is 0-2 in preliminary round play and the team built for International play has not been able to transition in Rio with any consistency.

Team USA can't hit from beyond the arc as illustrated by a Game 1 14 percent effort from 3-point land (3 of 21) and 35 percent (8 of 23) in Game 2.

. . . Wright's "binky" pick Scottie Reynolds from Villanova underwhelmed in the team tryouts and turned in a positively lousy opening-game performance with 10 points (on 4 of 13 shooting, 1 of 9 from 3-point land), three assists and NINE turnovers in 29 minutes. Game 2 was even worse offensively for Reynolds with one point. He did limit his turnovers, though, with just one (and two assists) in 23 minutes.

. . . Memphis's Joey Dorsey, a surprise pick to some because of his non-International body, has played a total of six minutes with two points and a rebound.

. . . Worse yet perhaps - at least for Tar Heel fans - UNC's Wayne Ellington is listed as "DNP-INJURED" on the box score from the Panama loss. It is unclear what the extent of Ellington's injury is and no mention of the Tar Heel sophomore-to-be is made in the USA Basketball-provided game story. Ellington played 10 minutes in game one and had an assist and no points.

If injured to any serious degree, Ellington would be the second elite ACC player to suffer a Pan Am-related injury. Duke senior-to-be DeMarcus Nelson never made it through tryouts as he broke his wrist.

. . . According to the USA Basketball story: "The U.S. loss combined with Argentina’s 71-69 win over Uruguay eliminated the USA’s chance of advancing to the medal round semifinals."

This should officially classify the trip as a failure, no matter how harsh that may sound.

. . . The U.S. will look for its first win when it closes out preliminary play Friday against 2-0 Argentina in a 6:45 p.m. (EDT) game.

I'm shocked and dissappointed. Especially since none of the games have been televised (so far) or if they have, they weren't in my area.
As for 3 point shooting and assists, maybe that Lofton fella' from Tennessee should have made the team instead!
