Heytvelt's Determined To Return

By Josh Herwitt - September 13, 2007

Josh Heytvelt wants another chance.

He wants to win another West Coast Conference championship and he wants to play in the NCAA Tournament this year.

So the 21-year-old Gonzaga center is making it his duty to get that opportunity as a junior this season.

Heytvelt has completed nearly 300 hours of community service, much more than the required amount handed down to him after being suspended last season for possession of psilocybin mushrooms.

"He appears to be on track to do everything that is asked of him," Gonzaga Sports Information Director Oliver Pierce told the Associated Press Wednesday. "We see no reason why he probably won't be back."

The school has not made an official decision yet and there is no time table when it may come, but Gonzaga coach Mark Few likes the way Heytvelt has bounced back since his Feb. 9 arrest.

"Josh has done everything asked of him," Few said. "We are optimistic he will again be a huge part of this team and of our success this coming season."

Redshirt sophomore Theo Davis, who was in the passenger seat with Heytvelt and charged with possession of marijuana, was also working hard to make a return to Spokane this season, but some of his obligations took a back seat when he agreed to play for the Canadian national team this summer.

Meanwhile, Heytvelt, who averaged more than 15 points last season and led the Bulldogs with 7.7 rebounds, will continue to work with terminally ill children, assist Habit for Humanity projects and pass weekly random urine tests until the charges have been dismissed.
