Big South Media Day Gets Set

By Ian Guerin - October 09, 2007

CONCORD, N.C. -- It's been less than seven months since the Big South earned its first victory in the NCAA Tournament.

In that time, though, long-time Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall left Rock Hill, S.C., departed for Wichita State and the Eagles lost their two biggest stars.

It's a scenario that must have High Point and coach Bart Lundy foaming at the mouth. There is a solid likelihood Winthrop's losses will equate to a Panthers' No. 1 spot in the Big South preseason poll. And High Point's top player -- do-everything forward Arizona "AZ" Reid -- will likely be the top player.

All of that will be known in about two hours, as the Big South basketball media days will take place at the Embassy Suites here in Concord.

Of course, some of the Big South's eagerness for this basketball season comes as the league's football teams are stuggling; none of the five football-playing members has a winning record. Much of the rest of the anticipation can be chalked up to a handful of new coaches.

Randy Peele took over for Marshall at Winthrop; Cliff Ellis succeeded short-timer Buzz Peterson at Coastal Carolina; Radford replaced embattled coach Byron Samuels with Brad Greenberg; and Liberty believes Ritchie McKay is the answer after Randy Dunton had just one winning season in five years in Lynchburg, Va.

I'll be here throughout the day, posting coaches' comments and some of the outlook for the 2007-2008 season.

See if you can get confirmation that HP's Jerald Minnis is out for the year. Going to be a big problem for HP if he's out, he took away a lot of heat for Arizona.

must have been a typo. he probably meant to ask nicely and say please but with the computer error it sounds like he's demanding.
