Hoyas, Cardinals Share Top Spot

NEW YORK -- The Big East has released its preseason coaches' poll for the 2007-08 season and Georgetown and Louisville -- to no one's surprise -- are sharing the role as conference favorite.

The Hoyas and Cardinals each received eight first-place votes, while the coaches were not allowed to vote for their respective teams.

Marquette followed in third in the balloting after earning trips to the NCAA Tournament in its first two seasons in the Big East, and Pittsburgh, despite losing First Team All-Big East center Aaron Gray, has been tabbed to finish for fourth.

Here's how the rest of the votes broke down:

1. Georgetown (8) - 217
Louisville (8) - 217
3. Marquette - 191
4. Pittsburgh - 170
5. Syracuse - 153
6. Connecticut - 149
7. Villanova - 143
8. Providence - 141
9. Notre Dame - 122
10. West Virginia - 112
11. DePaul - 79
12. Cincinnati - 62
13. Seton Hall - 56
14. St. John's - 52
15. Rutgers - 32
16. South Florida - 23

Meanwhile, Georgetown center Roy Hibbert was named the 2007-08 Big East Preseason Player of the Year by the coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players. It's the first time that a Georgetown player has been recognized as the conference's top player going into the season since Alonzo Morning and Malik Seal of St. John's shared the honor in 1991-92.

Syracuse's Jonny Flynn and Donte' Green were selected as this year's Big East Preseason Co-Rookies of the Year, and teammate Eric Devendorf also made the 2007-08 Preseason All-Big East Team after a sophomore campaign that saw the Bay City, Mich., native average 14.8 points and 4.1 assists at both backcourt spots last year.

Here's the other honorees in the conference:
