Majerus Brings Energy, Enthusiasm To Saint Louis

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- He just couldn't stay away anymore.

The passion to coach never fully left and it gnawed at him to the point that he had to get back into it.

For Rick Majerus, coaching is more than just a job.

"I feel good," said Majerus, entering his first season with Saint Louis. "My health is good and it was important to me to be near my Mom."

His mother lives in nearby Milwaukee, making the Saint Louis job attractive. An earlier opening at USC seemed like the right fit until Majerus realized at the last moment it wouldn't have been proper.

"I realize I missed practice when I was on TV," Majerus said. "I would go to Villanova's practices sometimes with Jay Wright. I just missed it. I'm happy to be back. It's a good place for me and I'm excited."

Majerus has amassed a career record of 422-147 with 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The Billikens haven't advanced to the NCAAs since 2000. They did win 20 games last season and should be solid again with the return of Tommie Liddell and Kevin Lisch.

"It all starts with practice," Majerus said. "That's where you get better and that's where you improve. I know I'm back in the game because I'm already yelling at them in practice."

Majerus did thoroughly enjoy broadcasting, but he realizes now where he belongs -- on the sidelines.

"I had more time off before so I could get the right hoagies and cheesesteaks," Majerus said. "I'm happy they made me an offer. I'm truly, truly excited for this season of Saint Louis basketball."
