More Than A Gimmick

CONCORD, N.C. -- When VMI coach Duggar Baucom found out his team was going to be picked third in the preseason Big South rankings, he immediately delivered a message to his team.

"I told them, 'Guys, you haven't done anything in this league to earn respect,'" Baucom said Tuesday during the league's basketball media day.

That much might be argued.

Sure, Baucom's up-and-down game plan was called everything from playground ball to a joke during last season's 101.7-point-per-game year. The Keydets scored at will, but they also gave up 98.2 points a game.

So when Baucom switched his trapping style defense to a zone one for the start of the Big South tournament, he caught everyone -- including Liberty and High Point, teams VMI defeated in the tournament before falling to Winthrop in the finals -- off guard.

"I hope," Baucom said, "I'm not running out of tricks."
