One More Time

By Josh Herwitt - October 08, 2007

What would you do if you had one more chance to play the game that you loved for just one more year?

Would you come back to do it all over again?

Will Bakanowsky is.

The NCAA announced Monday that the UCF center will now have an extra year of eligibility, which will allow him to play for the Knights during the upcoming 2007-08 season.

"Will has a great love for the game of basketball and we are excited about his return," said UCF coach Kirk Speraw. "He is a tremendous young man who represents all that is right with college athletics...We are very fortunate that Will now has the opportunity to be a student-athlete again."

Bakanowsky originally missed the entire 2005-06 campaign due to an injury but still managed to graduate from UCF in the spring of 2006. From there, he began his teaching career in Jacksonville before returning to Orlando, where he currently teaches middle school and continues to pursue his graduate degree at UCF.

But for the 6-foot-9 post from Gibbsboro, N.J., teaching will have to take a backseat to playing basketball in 2007-08.

That's OK with Bakanowsky, who appeared in 89 games -- including two in the NCAA Tournament -- from 2002-05 for the Knights and will play his final season in UCF's brand new 10,000-seat arena, where the season kicks off Nov. 11 against Nevada.

UNM's Dandrige Out With Broken leg

New Mexico senior Tony Dandrige is coming off a solid 2006-07 campaign that saw him average 12.5 points and 2.5 rebounds as a Third Team All-Mountain West selection last season.

But the 6-foot-5 swingman will be out until conference play begins this season after undergoing surgery on his broken left leg, which occurred during a pickup game last week.

"The surgery went extremely well," New Mexico coach Steve Alford said. "Tony will start rehabilitation as soon as possible. Hopefully, he will be available to us in early January."

After failing to make the NCAA Tournament in his final season at Iowa, Alford comes to New Mexico in hopes of turning the Lobos into a regular MWC contender with practice officially set to start on Friday.
