Just The Pitts

This wasn't the way Levance Fields wanted to begin his junior season.

But the Brooklyn native will now be spending the next nine months on probation after being charged with aggravated assault, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct last month.

The charges stem from a Sept. 16 altercation that Fields partook in outside a Pittsburgh nightclub. According to reports filed by the police, Fields punched an off-duty officer in the chest and then grabbed for his weapon before officers used a Taser to arrest him.

"We have let the judicial process run its course and acknowledge today's decision," Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon said after Tuesday's hearing. "Levance has been, and will continue to be, held to our team's disciplinary standards...The initial report of this incident did not reflect the young man I have come to know."

While authorities dropped all charges against Fields except for simple assault, the junior point guard will enroll in a special program for first-time offenders after appearing in county court on Oct. 26.

And if he finishes the nine-month probation period without any further problems, Fields should have his record expunged, according to defense attorney Robert DelGreco Jr.

"I think this addresses the government's concern for punishment, but also allows us to earn a clear record," DelGreco said. "We acknowledge wrongdoing and accepted responsibility and were grateful for what we believe to be a fair but firm deposition."

After missing team workouts since his arrest, Fields will resume his duties with the team as practice officially begins next Friday, Oct. 12.

Sturgeon Steps Down

Todd Sturgeon has had enough.

After guiding the Greyhounds to a 151-126 record in 10 seasons at the helm, the Indianapolis head coach announced his resignation Monday, citing personal reasons for his decision.

Assistant coach and former head coach Royce Waltman will serve as Indy's interim head coach until the school finds a replacement from its national search, which will begin at the end of the season this spring.

Waltman, who was fired in March by Indiana State, rejoined the Indianapolis staff in July after pacing the sidelines for the Greyhounds from 1992-1997 with an 89-49 record and Sturgeon as his assistant.
