Welcome To CAA Media Day

By Phil Kasiecki - October 17, 2007

WASHINGTON -- Welcome to the 2007 edition of CAA Media Day. As was the case last year, we are gathered at the ESPN Zone in the nation's capital. Hopefully, today's events will go a little more smoothly than last night's less-than-memorable trip here.

It started with a delay at Logan Airport, then a rental car where the radio and CD player didn't work, then a hotel room with no high-speed Internet connection. On top of it all, the Red Sox lost and trail three games to one.

But on to CAA business, as that's a little more pleasant...

The CAA is fresh off its second straight season with multiple NCAA Tournament bids, as VCU went via the automatic route and Old Dominion snagged an at-large bid. VCU made more headlines when the Rams advanced to the second round with a win over Duke, then almost knocked off Pittsburgh. Last year, Media Day had a record turnout in light of the success of the 2005-06 season.

The preseason vote is out among the CAA's coaches, sports information directors and media (full disclosure: I am a media voter), and the team picked to win it is George Mason. The Patriots return much of last season's team after making a run to the CAA championship game. The team that knocked them off, VCU, is picked second, led by junior Eric Maynor and two more returning starters. Maynor is also the preseason Player of the Year.

Here's how the vote went down:

1. George Mason
2. VCU
3. Old Dominion
4. Drexel
5. Hofstra
6. UNC Wilmington
7. James Madison
8. Northeastern
9. William & Mary
10. Delaware
11. Georgia State
12. Towson

Joining Maynor on the pre-season first team All-CAA are Hofstra senior guard Antoine Agudio, Delaware senior forward Herb Courtney, Drexel senior forward Frank Elegar and George Mason senior forward Will Thomas.

The coaches are due to emerge in less than 20 minutes, so we'll have more in just a little while.
