Wrapping It Up From FedEx

MEMPHIS -- We've just about hit our blogging limit for the day, so we'll finish up with a "Best Of C-USA Media Day" and remind you to join us for Memphis Madness on Friday night when we'll be live-blogging from the Forum beginning in the 7 p.m. CT hour.

Best Debut - Donnie Jones, Marshall head coach. The latest of the Billy Donovan disciples to earn his own program, Jones is as impressive as advertised. The Thundering Herd is still a year or two away, but Jones - after 11 years at Florida with Donovan - was an astute hire by the always-classy Marshall AD Bob Marcum.

Best Dressed Player - Houston's Marcus Malone went understated with a sweater and jeans but the ice in his ears sparkled.

Best Dressed Coach - Larry Eustachy is mostly a t-shirt and flip-flop guy, but he put on the ritz for this event, inclduing a black and gold striped Southern Miss logoed tie. He claimed it was a clip on, but we checked. It had a real knot and he tied it himself.

Best Bet To Surprise - Tulsa. Doug Wojcik emphasizes defense and his team has not allowed an opponent to shoot 50 percent or better in two seasons. He's got 70.4 percent of his scoring returning, led by senior Rod Earls and the Golden Hurricane are sure to build on last year's 20-win season.

Best Scrimmage - The Memphis coaching staff (plus some ringers) beat the Chinese Contingent, 100-80 in a "friendly" over at the Finch Center today.

Best Line of the Day - UAB's Mike Davis reposnded to a question from CSTV's Seth Davis about his team's recent off-court troubles by explaining, "These guys will have curfews for the rest of their lives. I'll be checking on them in five or ten years to make sure they're not in the clubs."

Best All-America Campaign - UTEP's Stefon Jackson's "D.J."-themed DVD with his picture on the front. It doesn't stand for disc jockey, it's for his nickname, Draining Jumpers. The DVD includes some of Jackson's "greatest hits."

Best Example of Student-Athletes - Rice, East Carolina and Southern Miss did not bring players to Media Day, as the students were busy with classes.
