Wrapping Up From MSG

By Josh Herwitt - October 23, 2007

NEW YORK -- I have a few more notes to leave you with as we wrap things up from MAAC Media Day.

1. Siena, this year's preseason favorite to win the MAAC, has a deep and talented roster that will be looking to claim its first conference title since 2002. Despite losing Michael Haddix to graduation, the Saints have a pair of All-MAAC picks in junior guard Kenny Hasbrouck and last year's MAAC Rookie of the Year, Edwin Ubiles. Siena coach Fran McCaffery also returns sophomore Ronald Moore and Alex Franklin.

2. Niagara has won two of the last three MAAC titles, and the Purple Eagles have a legitimate shot to make it three out of four with senior guard-forward combo Charron Fisher and sophomore guard Tyrone Lewis -- both preseason All-MAAC selections this year -- returning after last year's appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

3. Coming off its most successful season in school history, Loyola will look to compete with Siena for the top spot in the MAAC as seniors Gerald Brown, a preseason First Team All-MAAC candidate, Hassan Fofana, Omari Isreal and Michael Tuck all return to Baltimore for the 2007-08 season.

4. Marist graduated five seniors from last year's NIT team, including Jared Jordan, who led the nation the past two years in assists and was drafted last June by the Los Angeles Clippers. The Red Foxes do, however, welcome back seniors Ryan Stilphen, Spongy Benjamin and Louie McCroskey to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. this fall.

5. Rider will be going for its first-ever MAAC postseason title during the 2007-08 campaign. While the Broncs will rely heavily on preseason MAAC Player of the Year Jason Thompson, they'll also have junior Harris Mansell and sophomore Ryan Thompson to keep those title hopes alive.

We'll be back at Madison Square Garden tomorrow for more media day coverage as the Big East meets with the press and releases its preseason poll and player of the year candidates for the upcoming season.
