Xavier Picked To Win Atlantic-10

By Andy Jasner - October 25, 2007

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- I'm here live in Atlantic City, N.J., at Atlantic 10 Media Day, and for the second straight year, Xavier has been selected as the top team in the preseason poll conducted by the head coaches and media.

Xavier received 42 of the 59 first-place votes, and it makes sense because the Musketeers have won 20 or more games in 10 of the last 11 years with six NCAA Tournament appearances in the last seven years.

Rhode Island placed second followed by Saint Joseph's, Fordham and Saint Louis. Dayton was sixth followed by George Washington, Massachusetts, Temple and Charlotte. Duquesne is ranked 11th, Richmond 12th, La Salle 13th and St. Bonaventure last at No. 14.

Xavier is expected to be the class of the league, but to show how much parity exists is to point out that six teams received at least one first-place vote -- Xavier, Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's, Fordham, Dayton and Massachusetts.

In order words, this league should be fun to monitor since any team is capable of winning on any court at any given time.

Meanwhile, the preseason all-conference first team consists of Xavier's Drew Lavender, Rhode Island's Will Daniels, Saint Joseph's Ahmad Nivins, Fordham's Bryant Dunston and Dayton's Brian Roberts.
