Beale Street Baskets Debuts

By David Scott - November 06, 2007

Because of a lot of serendipity, is getting some special access to the 2007-08 Memphis Tigers basketball team of John Calipari. With that access comes a lot of material that might not quite fit into our regular coverage of the Top 5 Tigers.

That in mind, we're opening up the floodgates on a regular feature we're calling (until and if a better name surfaces): Beale Street Baskets.

While we'll certainly have our fair share of anecdotes, observations and insight into the Tiger's potential title run, we also urge you to share your thoughts for a recurring, season-long dialogue. Our comments section is always open for business.

. . . Some "Rose Petals" after the jump. . .

. . . It's two days into the season and already Derek Rose has an early head start on National Freshman of the Year honors (thanks in large part to ESPN putting together substantial Rose highlight packages each of the last two nights). Rose was named the region's MVP after putting up a debut night of 17 points and following up with a 21-point evening as the Tigers put away pesky Richmond, 80-63, with a late-game run.

The Tigers will now play on Nov. 15 in Madison Square Garden in the Classic's semifinals. It will be the first of two trips to NYC for Rose to show his stuff on a "national" stage. Memphis plays USC and its star freshman guard, OJ Mayo, on Dec. 4 at MSG as part of the Jimmy V Classic.

. . . Good move to rest Joey Dorsey and his ailing shoulder for the first two games. We'd expect a fully healthy Dorsey to start his season in NYC.
