Foundation Building For Wazzu

LOS ANGELES -- Washington State was picked second in the Pac-10 Conference preseason media poll but Coach Tony Bennett first heard about another poll earlier this summer.

"A friend called and told me we were picked seventh and I thought, OK, well we were 10th in the conference last year so we have moved up a little bit," Bennett said. "Then he told me, 'No, you were picked seventh in the country."

Bennett hopes his team handles the high expectations as well as it handled the lack of respect last preseason and believes it can happen because "winning and the chance to play in the postseason was a byproduct of doing things the right way."

Bennett also pointed to his father Dick, who preceded him at Washington State, as critical to the development of the program. He talked about how his father took a group of recruits to an unfinished house and told them the house would be great one day but it was important it had a great foundation. He compared the house's foundation to the players he had recruited to come to Washington State and said it was up to them to build it up through the tough times.

"He was the architect of that program," Bennett said. "And last year I think he went to three practices and left after about 15 minutes. Now a days, you can't get him away from the Golf Channel or the golf course."
