Kicking Off 2007-08

By Josh Herwitt - November 05, 2007

Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to the 2007-08 college basketball season.

After seven long months of anticipation, we open up the season with two games tonight in the Memphis Region of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.

Third-ranked Memphis opens its schedule in the nightcap of two games at the Tigers' FedEx Forum against Tennessee-Martin, while Richmond takes on Maine in the first contest at 4 p.m. ET.

While Memphis shouldn't have a problem against Tennessee-Martin, it will be interesting to see how the Tigers play with all the hype surrounding them over the offseason.

And that's even more true in learning earlier today that center Joey Dorsey will not be playing tonight or Tuesday after suffering a right shoulder sprain during a scrimmage on Oct. 27. Memphis coach John Calipari has confirmed that Shawn Taggart, a 6-foot-10 transfer from Iowa State, will start instead for Dorsey, who was dressed tonight and participated in warm-ups before the game against the Skyhawks.

But even with the rest of last year's starting lineup in tact and super freshman Derrick Rose now on the team, you just never know what can happen in college sports these days, especially after the way we saw No. 8 Michigan State fall Friday night in its exhibition game at home against Grand Valley State.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the games tonight as we kick off another exciting and unpredictable season of college basketball.
