Duke, Stanford Hit Century Mark

While the surprise of Gardner-Webb has got a lot of people anticipating next Thursday's semifinals of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic, Friday marked the start of the season for many teams.

Two teams in particular, No. 13 Duke and No. 23 Stanford, stood out from the rest, as the Blue Devils and Cardinal hit the 100-point mark in both their games.

Duke hit the highest point total of the night with a 121-56 demolishing of North Carolina Central. Taylor King, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith all made their debuts for Duke as each scored in double figures to lead the Blue Devils to their eighth straight season-opening victory.

The 121 points put up by Duke tied for sixth most in program history, and the 65-point victory margin tied for fourth all-time. Those were both made possible by a 57-percent field goal percentage and a 16 three-pointers.

Stanford, even without center Brook Lopez (currently academically ineligible), had its own field day against Harvard, scoring a 111-56 win in the Basketball Travelers Classic at Maples Pavilion.

It wasn't exactly a debut to remember for new Harvard coach Tommy Amaker. After all, Amaker came over to the Crimson after being fired by Michigan at the end of last season and has Harvard alums and fans thinking he can turn the program into a regular Ivy League contender.

This one, though, never seemed to be in doubt as the Cardinal started fast, running out to a 28-7 lead just nine minutes into the contest. Drew Shiller led the way with 18 points and Anthony Goods dropped in 17 to help Stanford reach its sixth-highest point total in school history.

The 111 points were the most since the Cardinal dropped 117 on UC Irvine 1990, but the 55-point margin ranked third in the Stanford record books.

And if Trent Johnson's team was able to put up that many against Harvard, it will be interesting to see how many the Cardinal can score against Northwestern State when the two teams meet in the tournament's second day of action Saturday.
