Side Stepping

LOS ANGELES -- Arizona State men's basketball coach Herb Sendek kicked off the Pac-10 men's basketball media day at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel near Los Angeles International Airport with a bit of a snafu.

Sendek started his talk at a secondary podium, placed on one side of the room before a Pac-10 official stopped him and pushed him to the main podium.

"With our record last year, I thought that was where I was supposed to stand," Sendek said while pointing to the secondary podium.

Sendek said last year's team showed more improvement than any other he's coached from the first day of practice to the last game of the season, although he also admitted it didn't translate into victories and he knows it won't be easy to pick any wins in conference this year either.

"We are about to embark on another great Pac-10 season," Sendek said.

ASU was picked ninth in the preseason media poll but Sendek hopes Duke transfer Eric Boateng and freshman James Harden can make an impact on the Sun Devils record.
