Thumbs Down

LOS ANGELES -- Most media days are light affairs with a couple chuckles and a few yawns from the bored reporters in the audience. This year's Pac-10 Media Day isn't much different as most coaches are fielding just a few questions and the large ballroom isn't even half-full this morning.

But everyone sort of snapped into attention when Washington coach Lorenzo Romar opened comments on his Huskies' team, which is picked eighth in the preseason media poll, with an injury announcement about senior guard Ryan Appleby.

"He fractured his thumb and it should take about six weeks but he'll be back after that," Romar said about the sweet perimeter shooter who made 84 three-pointers last year.

"I still think he could make some threes -- he's that good a shooter," Romar later said about Appleby, who started his college career at Florida.
