More Michigan Woes

By Josh Herwitt - November 03, 2007

What is up with college sports in the state of Michigan these days?

Seriously folks.

First, it's Michigan football losing its season opener to DI-AA "power" Appalachian State in the Big House, and now, it's the other Michigan school who's started off the year with its own catastrophe on the hardwood.

So much so, that when I woke up this morning and logged on to CSTV.com to briefly check up on the rest of the news from Friday night, my eyes almost bugged out my head.

If you haven't heard...

Grand Valley State 85, No. 8 Michigan State 82

What?!?

The Spartans not only lost an exhibition game, but they lost to, ehem, a Division II school, at home, in double overtime and after Michigan State trailed for almost the entire 50 minutes Friday night.

Talk about the birth of a new nationwide Michigan curse...

But the most interesting question from all of this is, could Michigan State really drop in the rankings (the AP poll just came out yesterday) from an exhibition loss?

While Tom Izzo's team shouldn't fall in the polls, it does kick off what could be a very wacky year in college basketball. And it certainly wouldn't be a complete novelty after what we've seen during the college football season this fall.

So for all you Michigan natives, I understand this is a tough time right now for you guys. But something has gotta change in the Great Lakes state, and it better be quick.

Josh,

Check out what Michigan has done since the first two games of the season this year. Eight game win streak with a banged up offensive team for the past 3-4 weeks.

You talk about the 'power' Ap. State team? UM should never have played that game. What do they have to gain from playing in a game vs a Division II team? Absolutely nothing, except for the fact that if they do not win big, embarassment and a ton of talk about how bad they are and then should they lose...We all know and see that from your fellow sports columnist articles. The second loss to a pretty good Oregon team that Michigan did not play well in, but also did not match up well against.

As for MSU basketball, they will do just fine I am sure with Coach Izzo and his staff. Seem to every year and I do not expect anything different this year.

Remember the old saying on any given day a bad team or inferior team can beat a good team. It just goes to show you what has happened throghout sports, parity is here and it makes it for more fun to watch sports these days, unless your someone looking to always point fingers!

Thanks,
Jerry
