More Kentucky Blues For Gillispie

By Josh Herwitt - December 19, 2007

Hey Billy, wanna get away now?

Heck, I would.

Well, who wouldn't after the way Kentucky got spanked by Houston Tuesday night, losing its second straight game to a Conference USA team, something that second-ranked Memphis hasn't done in almost two years with its last conference loss coming to UAB on March 2, 2006.

Yet it wasn't just that the Wildcats lost its fourth straight game for the first time since 1989-1990. It was the way they lost, falling behind by 12 at halftime and never really showing a sense of urgency to make a comeback in the second half before losing by 14.

So if the wheels haven't fallen off yet, how much worse can it really get in Lexington?

That's a question that a lot of Kentuckians are asking themselves right now after running Tubby Smith out of town last spring and celebrating the hiring of Gillispie that followed soon after.

And rightfully so, the Big Blue Nation had ever reason to celebrate Gillispie's arrival after the former Texas A&M coach took a traditional football school to two straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 last March.

But now Wildcat fans are certainly regretting that decision made by athletic director Mitch Barnhart, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament is quickly looking doubtful for a team that holds a 4-5 record with conference play on the horizon and Alex Legion announcing his transfer earlier this month.

If there's one guy that can turn things around in a hurry, though, it might be Gillispie. He did it at UTEP, he did it at Texas A&M, and he was hired to do it at Kentucky.

Now with his back against the wall and an entire nation of fans coming down on him, making the Big Dance this season would most likely be Gillispie's biggest accomplishment of his young coaching career.

With those kind of implications, what coach would ever want to pass up an opportunity to prove the countless critics, skeptics and haters all wrong?

Certainly not Gillispie, that's for sure.

I wish the national media will interview UK fans and see if they are unhappy with the new coach instead of making dumb statements. I hope you know that UK has been playing with 2 starters this year due to injury. Why not report that? We are very happy with Coach Billy Clyde, most of this years team is the result of poor recruiting with Tubby Smith -- why not report that?
