Drake Looking For Spark Without Young
By Josh Herwitt - January 10, 2008
This wasn't what Keno Davis wanted to see.
Not after his team dismantled Indiana State by 25 points Wednesday night to match a school record with its 12th straight win.
But the first-year Drake coach learned Thursday afternoon that sophomore Josh Young, the Missouri Valley's leading scorer, will be out indefinitely with a sprained right ankle.
The 6-foot-1 guard, who is averaging 16.3 points per game, has helped lead the Bulldogs to their best start in school history at 13-1 before going down early in the second half last night.
Drake, in fact, has been one of the surprise stories in the MVC, starting at 4-0 for the first time since 1970, and currently sits tied with Illinois State for first place in the conference with an average margin of defeat at +18.2 points per game.
Davis' team will look to extend its win streak to 13 on Saturday night when it welcomes Missouri State (9-7 overall, 2-2 MVC) to the Drake Knapp Center in a series that the Bears have dominated, 28-7, with wins coming in each of MSU's last 10 meetings with the Bulldogs.
