Eustachy's Next Coach To Take Leave

By Josh Herwitt - January 09, 2008

Earlier this week we learned that Detroit coach Perry Watson would be joining Arizona's Lute Olson and San Francisco's Jessie Evans in taking a leave of absence for the rest of this season with his being for unspecified medical reasons.

Now there's a possibility of adding another coach to that list after Southern Miss' Larry Eustachy announced Wednesday afternoon that he would also be taking an indefinite leave of absence in order to take care of his sick mother, who is currently battling cancer.

While it's unclear for now how long the fourth-year coach will be out, it's possible that he could be back as soon as Saturday for the Golden Eagles' home game against Tulane.

In the meantime, associate head coach Steve Barnes will take over for Eustachy, who made the announcement Tuesday night after his team fell, 52-41, to UCF in its Conference USA opener and then flew to California Wednesday to be with his mother, Helen.

"At this time, Larry needs to go home and be with his mother," Southern Miss athletic director Richard Giannini said. "I went through the same situation, and I know it can be day by day. I believe nothing else is more important. I encourage Larry to take as much time as he needs."

So from all of us at CSTV and, we wish Eustachy and his family the best during this difficult time.
