Office Hours: Undefeateds Dwindle Edition

By David Scott - January 13, 2008

The Professor has to apologize for our tardiness with this edition of the Report Card. We got knocked on our suede elbow patches by a nasty flu bug following the Patriots game on Saturday (maybe it's the same thing that made Peyton Manning look so feeble on Sunday).

We've been hepped up on NyQuil, TheraFlu and hot tea for 36 hours, so you'll understand if our writing and grading are a bit sloppy this week.

We're doubling up on the Vitamin C and will be back at full strength for next week.

In the meantime, an abbreviated assessment of the week that was:

F: North Carolina State
A 13 point first half -- in a week of putrid offense throughout the game -- was just too brutal to watch. The Wolfpack showed great dysfunction throughout the second half of the first stanza after starting off with a respectable 9-9 run in the first five minutes. After that, North Carolina went on a 34-4 run which proved to be the ballgame as No. 1 North Carolina won, 93-62, as it called off the dogs in the second half.

"We didn’t play particularly well in that first half," understated Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe.

A: Larry Eustachy
The Southern Miss head coach took a temporary leave last week to be with his ailing mother but returned on Saturday to lead his squad to a 71-54 win over Tulane. On Saturday night, Helen Eustachy passed away in California and Eustachy will again take a temporary leave this week to be with his family.

"I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers,” Eustachy said in a release from USM. “I appreciate all the condolences me and my family have received.”

Eustachy showed every young man on his team -- and anyone paying attention -- how to balance work responsibility with the duty of being a good son and he needs to be commended. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Eustachy and his family.

USM plays at Alabama-Birmingham on Wednesday, although it's not known if Eustachy will be back for that contest. His long-time assistant and close friend, Steve Barnes has been coaching the Eagles in Eustachy's absence.

Information and quotes from school/conference releases, official websites and wire stories were used in this notes column.
