UConn Faces Hoosiers Without Dyson, Wiggins

If Jim Calhoun was hoping to leave Bloomington, Ind., this weekend with a win that the NCAA Tournament selection committee could ultimately look back on in March, he'll need a lot more help than he was originally expecting.

That's because the 35-year UConn coach announced Friday that starting guard Jerome Dyson and backup guard Doug Wiggins have been indefinitely suspended for violating unspecified team rules.

While the school did not provide any more information about the suspensions handed down by Calhoun, the two sophomores did not travel with the Huskies to face No. 7 Indiana tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.

"It obviously isn't something that is making me particularly happy," Calhoun told The Hartford Courant after arriving at the team's hotel. "This particular suspension is mine, no one else's. I took the action based upon what I felt was in the best interest of our basketball team and the university."

Neither player was arrested for any off-court issues and discipline was not handed down for any poor academic performance, but it is the second time already this season that Wiggins has been suspended after being banished from the locker room during the preseason.

"I made a decision based upon something that happened, but it's very difficult to say for a kid who was suspended for over a month this year that it doesn't fall under a pattern," Calhoun continued, referring to Wiggins' early suspension.

And now the challenge of knocking off the Hoosiers, who are vying for their 30th straight win at home after improving to 12-0 on Wednesday, will be even greater now for the Huskies with Dyson -- UConn's second-leading scorer at 14.3 points per game -- and Wiggins both spending the weekend in Storrs, Conn.
