Beale Street Baskets: Let The Hype Begin

By David Scott - February 21, 2008

MEMPHIS -- Hang Time has touched down in Elvis's old stomping grounds and as much of a circus as the Tiger basketball program usually encompasses -- as the No. 1 team in the nation is won't to do -- the big top is approximately one thousand times crazier than usual as the gargantuan Saturday match-up between No. 1 Memphis and No. 2 Tennessee draws closer.

Asking prices for tickets are near Super Bowl levels and there even appears to be a chance to purchase get two all-access passes to the game if someone is willing to shell out $4,000 (we're not sure the passes are authentic and we're pretty sure whoever is selling them is doing so at great peril - especially if they work for the University).

The Memphis Sports Information staff is hard at work trying to accommodate all the media requests for the game and preparations for the contest are underway in the basketball offices where we're currently entrenched. John Calipari and his staff have been in meetings this morning preparing for the game and just took a lunch break about 30 minutes ago. The team will practice and watch film beginning at 3 p.m.

. . . There is no definitive word on whether Shawn Taggart will be available for duty on Saturday, but it appears his Wednesday treatment sessions went well. Taggart suffered a knee injury and a broken nose in the win at UAB. The right knee injury is being described as a deep bone bruise.

We'll be checking in with columns and updates for the next few days, so be sure to check back with us frequently.
