Knight Joins His Nemesis

By Josh Herwitt - February 28, 2008

Well here's a headline you don't see everyday...

Bob Knight hired as analyst by ESPN for NCAA tournament (AP)

Um, excuse me?

For a guy that's absolutely loathed the media for the last 42 years, it's hard to believe that Bob Knight is about to join us with his own analysis and commentary.

After all, you don't have to dig deep to see how Knight really feels about the media...

"All of us learn to write in the second grade. Most of us go on to greater things."

"Just remember, when you're at a game and you see grass, it's the opposite side of the ball but if you see hardwood out there is the other end of the floor. Trying to help you young guys in this profession you've chosen. It's one or two steps above prostitution."

Then, on Thursday, he had this to say about The Worldwide Leader: "I think ESPN has been real good for college basketball and I look forward to working with some of their people who I have known a long time."

And while you can't blame ESPN for hiring what many have considered the "greatest coach of all-time," you have to wonder at some point just what Knight is hoping to gain by joining Dick Vitale, Digger Phelps, Jay Bilas, Doug Gottlieb and the rest of the team in Bristol, Conn.

So for all you college basketball fans, make sure to tune in on March 12 when one of the sports media's biggest critics finally joins, well, the media.

I totally agree. ESPN initially ripped Knight for leaving his team mid season, which I agreed with. I figured the only reason such a high caliber coach as himself would do such a thing would be to get away from it all and refocus on his family and personal life. But he stays very involved in the college basketball world to make a quick buck and get attention in the media you point out he mocked for years. ESPN is not gonna say this after just hiring and raving about hiring the guy on every one of their shows, and since stupid people drink down every word ESPN has to say Knight will never get the criticism he deserves.
