More Compelling Game On Tap?

LAS VEGAS -- BYU and UNLV traded blowouts on their home floors during the regular season, but everyone is hoping for a more compelling game tonight.

Top-seeded BYU (27-6) and No. 2 UNLV (25-7) are set to tip off in about 11 minutes in the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship game at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The game is being played on UNLV's home floor, where the Rebels have won 23 straight games against conference opponents. UNLV beat BYU 70-41 here in January and BYU returned the favor in Provo 74-48 in February.

The title game is a rematch of last year's title game when No. 2 UNLV beat No. 1 BYU 78-70. Both teams went to the NCAA Tournament and the same is going to happen this season.

BYU wants the tournament title - which would be only its second in the MWC (2001 is the other) - but has also been playing to improve its NCAA seeding. Being able to only play in a Thursday-Saturday subregional for religious reasons makes the situation a bit sticky for everyone involved.

A win over UNLV on its home court could help the cause.
