Hansbrough Racking Up Postseason Awards

Whether Tyler Hansbrough decides to return to North Carolina for his senior season is still uncertain, but for the time being, he's certainly enjoying his slew of postseason awards these days.

But the biggest came on Sunday, when the All-American junior was handed this year's Naismith Trophy by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Hansbrough beat out a great field of ball players, which included Memphis junior Chris Douglas-Roberts, Kansas State freshman Michael Beasley and UCLA freshman Kevin Love, in becoming the 16th player from the ACC to receive the prestigious award.

"Tyler is an ideal player to win the Naismith Trophy because of his ability, humility and worth ethic and the fact he has always put team goals and accomplishments ahead of personal awards," North Carolina coach Roy Williams maintained. "He is an outstanding young man who is a credit to his family, his university, our team and college basketball."

And it was certainly well-deserved after averaging 22.8 points and 10.2 rebounds as the ACC's Player of the Year and leading the Tar Heels to both the ACC regular season and tournament championships, a No. 1 ranking in the polls and a school-record 36 wins.

Hansbrough is just the third player from North Carolina to earn the award and he joins some pretty elite company with Michael Jordan (1984) and Antawn Jamison (1998) in also being the sixth player in school history to have his jersey hang from the rafters of the Smith Center.

Earlier last week, Hansbrough was honored in San Antonio by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association with this year's Oscar Robertson Trophy as the fourth UNC player to receive the USBWA award, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

"Tyler has played a pivotal role in North Carolina's tremendous success this season, and has ably handled the pressure of being the leader of a top team," said Gary Stokan, Atlanta Tipoff Club president. "We honor and salute all of the finalists for exceptional play this year."
