Self Sticking To Lawrence

By Josh Herwitt - April 10, 2008

When there first came word of Oklahoma State offering Kansas' Bill Self the head coaching job at his alma mater, there was plenty of gossip going around the media in San Antonio before the Jayhawks ultimately claimed the national championship one day later over Memphis.

And while that buzz continued for a couple days as Self and his team returned home to Lawrence, Kansas fans don't have to worry now about their coach hightailing it to Stillwater, Okla.

That's because on Thursday the national championship-winning coach announced that he won't be leaving the Jayhawks after spending much of the day meeting with athletic director Lew Perkins.

Self's retention at Kansas, however, wasn't the only big news from Thursday.

Stanford coach Trent Johnson, in fact, made it official that he'll be heading to Baton Rouge, La., to take over a LSU program that reached the Final Four just two years ago under John Brady.

But a dismal 1-6 start in SEC play this past season had Brady getting the boot and Butch Pierre filling in for the Tigers' final 10 games as interim head coach.

Now, LSU has a proven coach that has gotten results at both Nevada and Stanford, two schools that reached the Sweet 16 under Johnson.

The move, nevertheless, comes as a surprise to many, especially after Johnson had led Stanford to the Sweet 16 just a couple weeks ago.

Yet with the departure of 7-foot twins Brook and Robin Lopez to the NBA, you can understand what Johnson would be without had he stuck around Palo Alto, Calif.

It certainly must have been enough for him to want out because earlier in the day, he was expected to have a meeting with Stanford's athletic director to discuss a new contract.

Johnson will have that new contract, only this time with a different school, one that he believes can take his coaching career to the next level.

So if you're the Cardinal right now, you're can't help but wish that your former head coach and associate athletic director, Mike Montgomery, would have waited before accepting the vacancy across the Bay with those dreaded Golden Bears just less than a week ago.
