ABCD Heads Down Turnpike
Amateur basketball magnate Sonny Vaccaro announced in January that the Reebok ABCD Camp, his celebrated invitational for the nation's elite high school players, would not be back at Fairleigh Dickinson University for the first summer since its inception in 1984.
Both Vaccaro and the shoe company acknowledged that another Reebok-sponsored camp could supplant the folded North Jersey event -- but it would not be known as ABCD and Vaccaro would not be involved.
That suggestion came to fruition Monday with the announcement of Rbk U, an all-star invitational to be held on the campus of Philadelphia University during the second week of July.
Invitations will be extended to 120 players -- or 30 less than this summer's 150-player event. A national selection committee of high school coaches and talent evaluators will handpick 65 players while the other golden tickets will be handed out through the Headliner Tryout Camps which the sneaker giant will host throughout the country during the early summer.
