Gilchrist to South Florida

# Center/forward Gus Gilchrist of Temple Hills-Progressive Christian Academy, Md., will transfer from Maryland to South Florida, according to the Tampa Tribune. He also considered Kentucky and West Virginia.

Gilchrist had first signed with Virginia Tech in November 2006, but opted out of his letter citing the 2007 shootings on campus. He enrolled in Maryland, but the ACC ruled Gilchrist would not be eligible until January 2009 and would lose a year of eligibility because he had signed with another conference school. Maryland then gave Gilchrist a requested release. South Florida is expected to appeal to the NCAA for a hardship waiver that would allow Gilchrist to play this season at USF. If the appeal is not successful, he would not be able to play at USF until the 2009-10 season.

Nate Miles cleared for UConn

# Well-traveled Top 100 guard/forward Nate Miles of Toledo-Libbey, Ohio/Oak Hill Academy, Va/Libbey (again)/Toledo-Waite, Ohio/San Antonio-Cornerstone Christian, Tex/Patterson School, NC., ranked No. 60 overall in Class 2008, has been granted eligibility by the NCAA to attend UConn, The Hartford Courant reports. Miles joins Kemba Walker, Ater Majok, Charles Okwandu and Scottie Haralson as incoming UConn recruits. The school has only four scholarships to offer, but head coach Jim Calhoun has hinted that sophomore forward Stanley Robinson's future with the team is in question.

Gamecocks put two walk-ons on scholarship

# Former walk-on guards Branden Conrad of Charlotte-Providence Day School, NC; and Robert Wilder of Chapin, SC., have earned scholarships at South Carolina for the 2008-09 school year, first-year head coach Darrin Horn announced. "Both Branden and Robert have been exemplary in everything that we have asked of them since we arrived on campus," said Horn. "Since we have some scholarships available, I felt that we should reward them while we can. They have earned it and they deserve it." Conrad appeared in 10 games for the Gamecocks during the 2007-08 campaign. He came to Carolina after spending two years at the Naval Academy. "I am excited about helping lead this team to new heights in my senior season," said Conrad. "To do it as a scholarship player is a goal realized and something I will always be grateful to Coach Horn and his staff for making possible." Wilder appeared in six games for the Gamecocks in 2007-08. He joined the team last fall after sitting out his freshman year at USC. "I'm thankful Coach Horn and his staff have helped make a dream come true for me," said Wilder. "I'm excited about the direction our program is headed and want to do whatever I can to help make it successful." The Gamecocks currently have 11 players on scholarship.

J'Mison Morgan is officially a Bruin

# Top 100 center J'Mison Morgan of Dallas-South Oak Cliff, Tex., ranked No. 39 overall in Class 2008, has officially signed with the UCLA Bruins, head coach Ben Howland announced. The 6-10 prospect had been granted a requested release from his signed letter to LSU due to a coaching change.

UCLA has the top 2008 recruiting class in the nation. "I am very, very excited that J'Mison is going to be attending UCLA and be a part of our program," said Howland. "He is a true center with excellent hands and outstanding overall skills. He is a fine passer, shot blocker and rebounder. J'Mison completes a five-player 2008 class that we believe gives us a great foundation for the future."

Sallie now looking at Kty, Mem, Cinn, Md

# Touted guard Roburt Sallie of Sacramento-Valley, Cal/Laurinburg Prep, NC/Patterson School, NC/CC of San Francisco, Cal., won't be eligible to compete at Nebraska, or any Big 12 Conference school. He now plans to visit Kentucky, Memphis, Cincinnati and Maryland. Seton Hall, Oregon State and Marshall are also in the mix.

The reason lies in Big 12 Conference Rule 6.2, which states that any student-athlete who enrolls at a conference institution, part-time or full time, must meet NCAA initial eligibility requirements. Sallie had not met those NCAA requirements when he enrolled part-time and paid for his own classes at Nebraska in the fall of 2006. Sallie, who had recently re-signed with the Huskers in Class 2008, was hoping the NCAA academic clearinghouse would grant him eligibility. Despite three appeals, the NCAA ruled against Sallie and made him in violation of Rule 6.2. Nebraska requested a conference waiver, but the Big 12 Council denied it. Sallie can still compete at any NCAA school outside the Big 12.

Gilchrist to leave Maryland

# Center Gus Gilchrist of Temple Hills-Progressive Christian Academy, Md., who chose the Terps after being released from his scholarship at Virginia Tech, has been granted a transfer by Maryland. Gilchrist sat out last season after enrolling at Maryland in January 2008. He was the Most Valuable Player of the Capital Classic all-star game in 2007. "Gus has asked for a release to explore other options which may allow him to play more games at another university outside the Atlantic Coast Conference, pending an NCAA waiver," said coach Gary Williams.

Jasper to transfer from Kentucky

# Sophomore guard Derrick Jasper of Paso Robles, Ca., has requested his release from the Kentucky Wildcats so he can transfer. He played in 20 games this past season.

The Wildcats will also lose center Morakinyo Williams of Solihull, England/Alexandria-Bishop Ireton, Va., who played in just five games as a freshman. Williams earlier asked Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie to release him from his scholarship.
