Improved Players Hold Key To A Great Season!

Chris McCray and D.J. Strawberry are two of the best players in college basketball. After D.J.'s injury last year, it was questioned whether or not he would return in the same condition he was in before the injury. Dec05 016.jpg Not only has he returned with more power than ever, but he has also improved his game a great deal. With more speed than ever, D.J.'s defensive skills have lead Maryland to become one of the top 15 teams in the country! Matching Strawberry's defensive skills, McCray has lead Maryland's offense by become the Terps top scorer in a number of game already this season! Dec05 023.jpg
Players such as Travis Garrison and Sterling Ledbetter that sometimes go unrecognized have improved their game and have already added a lot to the 05-06 Maryland Men's Basketball Team! Dec05 024.jpg

Team Unity Leads to Big Wins!
Team unity shown in these pictures have helped Maryland beat teams such as Boston College so far this year. It is clear that this year's men's basketball team is a lot stronger than last year's team. Dec05 020.jpg Will the team's unity and motivation the players give one another help Maryland become a top team when it comes to the NCAA tournament this year? Only time will tell. Dec05 006.jpg

Terps Women's Basketball: Get on the bandwagon now

By Stephen Whyno

Gary Williams, Chris McCray and Nik Caner-Medley take the court Friday with the hope of returning to the NCAA tournament after a one year absence. The other basketball team MADE the tournament last year and have much higher aspirations.
Yeah, they don't get the acclaim the men do, but Brenda Frese and the women's team will be a better team and deserve the attention from College Park right now.
Guard Shay Doron may be the most charismatic character on the hardwood at Maryland, and she can score a little bit too. Doron averaged 17.6 ppg last year and will again pace the team as a junior.
oct05%20026.jpgSophomore Crystal Langhorne, fresh off her MVP performance at the Under-19 World Championships, could be the best rebounder in the nation-- and she gets help from Laura Harper, who returns from a torn achilles tendon that cut her rookie season short.
Frese's latest recruiting class will be tested all season with freshman Kristi Toliver taking over at the point starting with the Terps' opener at Siena. Toliver is poised and ready, even with just high school experience and one scrimmage under her belt.
Ranked No. 14 in the nation, Frese's Terps are going to be a force in March with Doron and Langhorne,
the best inside-outside combo in the country. The men will get the press and the attention as crowds at Comcast swell, but the women will be piling up what matters in the postseason- wins and experience.
Get on the bandwagon now, cause it'll be speeding to Boston for the tourney in 2006.

Blackout time, baby

By Stephen Whyno
Even though the Terrapin football team never came out of its shell last on national television against Virginia Tech, the game set the tone for a whole new idea for fans.
As the Terps ran out of their red tunnel following red flags onto a field with red painted letters, their black uniforms drew deafening cheers from a student section – which itself was a sea of darkness.
What was called “Byrd Blackout 2005” was the best idea students, fans and the athletics department has come up with since Fear the Turtle. The black was menacing, ‘cause turtles are scarier in black at night.
Talk about fearing the turtle.

The game that night turned into a blowout, but he blackout was something that needs to continue—and I’ll even take it to an extreme so Maryland can plant a new tradition where so few ones remain.
There’s a sea of red at Georgia, blue and white at Duke, maroon and gold at USC—why not make black the color for the Terps? It’s original and it’s something that’ll unite students, alumni and fans.
Terp fans should blackout the arenas and stadiums for every night game, turning fans scattered throughout Byrd and Comcast into one solitary group. The red seats and silver bleachers will look so much better behind walls of black.
Now don’t think I’m gothic and against Maryland’s white, red and gold, but there’s something special that can be created at nighttime with black for Terps sports.
I mean, after Rock and Roll Part II was banned and the clock was turned back on Midnight Madness, Maryland is grasping for any thread of tradition it can find.
Don’t let this one get away.
