Notre Dame is the Champ!

By Amsinger - May 15, 2006

Mark it down. January 8th, 2007. Glendale, Arizona will be the site. For the first time in its infancy the brand spankin' new Arizona Cardinals football stadium will be at capacity. A rematch of the 2006 Fiesta Bowl will determine college football's national champion.

Notre Dame beats Ohio State.

Why wait any longer? I'm making the pick now! The Irish success is NOT based around a Heisman-caliber-quarterback, nor is it funneled through a shark-looking wideout. Notre Dame will win the national championship this season because Charlie Weis is head coach.

What Charlie did in his first season with the Irish is the stuff legends are made of. His video-game coaching style resulted in a 9-2 regular season that featured an offensive explosion at 38 points per game. Charlie took Ty Willingham's players and gained 143 MORE yards per game compared to the previous season. The offensive core is back in '06 with QB Brady Quinn, RB Darius Walker and WR Jeff Samardzija.

Charlie did take a draft day hit. The Irish must replace two starters along the offensive line as well as tight end Anthony Fasano, talented wide receiver Maurice Stovall, and bruising fullback Rashon Powers-Neal. Losing players of that caliber will have an effect, but don't worry about the offense. Notre Dame's BCS ticket will be determined by the defense.

The defensive line returns all its starters while the secondary is still chasing Dwayne Jarrett. If Charlie finds a way to improve his overall swiss cheese "D", the Irish can't be stopped.

Let's check out the 2006 schedule and find out how it will all shake out:

NOTRE DAME - 42
Georgia Tech - 35

Penn State - 17
NOTRE DAME - 35

Michigan - 28

NOTRE DAME - 62

NOTRE DAME - 48
USC - 45

You heard it here first.

The first and last regular season games will be the biggest tests for the Irish. Georgia Tech is a top ten team next season, quarterback Reggie Ball will give the young ND secondary fits. USC will be revved up for the #1 Irish in Los Angeles. Get ready for another classic between these two. This time, Charlie Weis is walking off the field smiling.

12-0, the record of a champion. Ohio State will also run the table and once again the BCS won't be allowed to screw up the national championship game. Troy Smith versus Brady Quinn will remind many of us of Matt Leinart vs. Vince Young. Both will have something to prove in college football's biggest stage since both will be stymied in New York for the Heisman Trophy.

Who will win instead?

Auburn's tailback Kenny Irons.

Find out why in my next blog!
