Round Two of Week Two

By Amsinger - September 05, 2006

I said Florida State would win by one. What do I know, they won by three. Anyway, you have half of my week two picks already - now it's time for my thoughts on the Pac-Ten, ACC, Big 12, Mountain West, MAC and the Independants.

If you want my picks from the Big Ten, SEC, Big East, Conference USA, WAC, Sun Belt and my Lindenwood University...check out yesterday's blog.

And...we're off!

PAC TEN CONFERENCE: I'm 7-2 in this league.

OREGON ST. - 31
Boise State - 24

*The Broncos weren't tested at all by Sacremento State in week one, now they face a OSU offense that looked like the best in the Pac-Ten. RB Yvenson Bernard is so good, freshman quarterback Sean Canfield doesn't have too much pressure on his shoulders. As long as he doesn't screw up, Bernard is blessing the Beavers with a 2-0 start.

IDAHO - 24
Wash. St. - 20

*The Cougars offense was completely shut down by Auburn. Now I know it's Auburn, but Idaho was able to contain Michigan State QB Drew Stanton pretty well and the Vandals have some momentum from East Lansing. Dennis Erickson looks like a genius in week two with this crucial road win.

STANFORD - 45
San Jose ST. - 28

*The absolute worst thing that could have happened to SJSU is Oregon blowing out Walt Harris' team. The Cardinal will show up and dominate from the opening kickoff.

Nevada - 38
ARIZONA ST. - 48

*Another shoot-out. Rudy Carpenter continues to flourish as the lone ASU signal-caller. Tough way for the Wolf Pack to open up the season, up next? A good Colorado State team and the emotional Wildcats of Northwestern.

OREGON - 58
Fresno St. - 55 (2 OT)

*Could be the best game of the season! The Ducks offense goes toe-to-toe with the FSU's hometown tenacity. Just when you think Oregon is about to lose this one, sophomore sensation RB Jonathan Stewart comes up big. This kid could be a Heisman hopeful as the year progresses.

Rice - 27
UCLA - 51

*Major Applewhite's new offense keeps putting up points, but the Bruins continue to make a statement. What is that? This year's bunch is better than last seasons.

Arizona - 20
LSU - 42

*No team looked better - in all of college football in week one than the LSU Tigers. JeMarcus Russell was perfect and he'll stay that way against a Wildcat defense that has improved vastly from '05.

Minnesota - 45
CALIFORNIA - 55

*The Cal defense looked like a JV squad against Tennessee and won't be able to stop the Gophers freakish backfield of Alex Daniels and Amir Pinnix. Still, either Nate Longshore or Joseph Ayoob will get things going offensively for the Bears and once that happens - WATCH OUT! I'm not jumping off this bandwagon just yet.

WASHINGTON - 35
Oklahoma - 31

*Don't forget about Tyrone Willingham just yet! He's back in a big way after upsetting the Sooners at home. Adrian Peterson rushes for 150 yards and does all he can - but this OU team just doesn't have "it" anymore. Look for a great comeback drive led by QB Isaiah Stanback - who will show good he really is in this one. Expect over 200 yards passing and over 100 yards on the ground from the Huskies senior signal-caller.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE: I'm 9-2 in this league.

Akron - 17
N.C. STATE - 19

*Luke Getsy is a gamer at quarterback for the Zips. He'll give Akron a four-point lead at half-time and everything will look hunky-dorey until the Wolf Pack wake up and shut down the Zips in the second half. Nice start to the season for Chuck Amato.

Virginia Tech - 14
N. CAROLINA - 16

*The only way John Bunting can make Tar Heel fans forget about losing to Rutgers in week one is this upset special!!! Joe Dailey makes major strides in this one for UNC and the youth on the offensive line, QB and tailback positions for Virginia Tech will be exposed against a solid Tar Heel defense.

Duke - 17
WAKE FOREST - 35

*Basketball season starts in 2 months and 7 days Blue Devil fans.

Samford - 6
GEORGIA TECH - 28

*The Yellowjacket offense continues to struggle - especially in the first half. But Reggie Ball realizes, his dual-threat ability has to be the focus of this year's team for Chan Gailey to win the ACC (like I predicted by the way). Calvin Johnson racks up 150 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

CLEMSON - 45
Boston College - 10

*WOW!!! The Tigers continue to showcase their incredible balance on both sides of the ball. Will Proctor will manage this game as perfectly as he did against Florida Atlantic to open the season. What a statement game! Tommy Bowden has the most talented team in the ACC.

WYOMING - 28
Virginia - 24

*Al Groh is officially on the hot seat after losing to the Cowboys AT HOME! The Cavs offense looks awful and QB Christian Olsen is simply not the fit. Huge win for head coach Joe Glenn. RB Wynel Seldon is the real deal and could have an NFL future. You'll see what I mean in this game...he's just a sophomore.

Troy - 3
FLORIDA ST. - 41

*After a grueling, hard fought battle with Miami - the 'Noles have a field day with this Sun Belter.

Middle Tenn. St. - 16
MARYLAND - 37

*Sam Hollenbach is off to a bad start, but that changes after beating the Blue Raiders depleted defense that returns just four starters from '05.

Florida A&M - 0
MIAMI - 55

*Larry Coker doesn't just need a blowout here...he needs a shutout too.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE: I'm 10-2 in this league.

OHIO ST. - 28
Texas - 27

*It comes down to a Vince Young-esque performance from Troy Smith. While Colt McCoy gets shaken up a bit in this big-time brawl. The Buckeyes defense will make huge strides from week one and shut down the Longhorn wideouts. OSU will be down at the half and with 5 minutes to play, but Troy Smith will prove he's worthy of all the preseason hype.

Ole Miss - 20
MIZZOU - 35

*Strong win for head coach Gary Pinkel. The Tigers offense somehow looked better withOUT Brad Smith playing quarterback than with him behind center. It's time for fans in Columbia to move on - Chase Daniel is your huckleberry now. The sophomore quarterback completely outplays his counterpart, Brent Schaeffer. Ed Orgeron bursts a blood vessel screaming during this one.

Nicholls State - 17
NEBRASKA - 41

*The Cornhuskers use the Colonels as a tune-up for next week's big dance with USC. QB Zac Taylor continues to play well while Cody Glenn and Marlon Lucky bring balance with a solid running game. I like Bill Callahan's team a lot. Lincoln has every reason to get excited for this group of Huskers.

Colorado - 13
COLORADO ST. - 35

*So many of us think the Buffs should bounce back in a big way after losing to Montana State. Here's the only problem with this way of thinking ...Dan Hawkins has absolutely NOTHING to work with. Sure the Rams lost their leader in RB Kyle Bell to a season-ending injury - but CSU is still a very exciting team. The Rams prove the Mountain West may be the most improved conference in college football. Colorado vs. CSU airs on CSTV at 5 eastern Saturday!

UNLV - 45
Iowa St. - 35

*Rocky Hinds is the perfect quarterback for Mike Sanford's spread offense. This is huge upset victory for the Rebels and could change the way many experts think of the Cyclones. After almost losing to Toledo at home - now this...ISU was very overrated in the preseason.

Texas Tech - 45
UTEP - 49

*Last week, Jordan Palmer didn't look Heismanesque - like I predicted all preseason long. Yet, he led the Miners down the field, late in the game - to preserve the victory. He's a winner. Despite picking against Texas Tech last week - I have to do it again...the Miners tear down the goal posts in El Paso!!!!!

N'Western St. - 17
BAYLOR - 33

*It sounds like I'm being tough on the Big 12 huh? I've got Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa State, Colorado and Texas Tech losing out of conference this week! Maybe it just goes to show the Big 12 shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as the SEC, ACC and Big Ten. As for Baylor, the Bears looked good against TCU last week. This week Waco celebrates a win.

La-Lafayette - 13
TEXAS A&M - 20

*Stephen McGee comes back down to earth after week one. I know the Ragin' Cajuns were blown out by LSU, but they have too much pride to get destroyed two weeks in a row. Expect Dennis Franchione to sweat through this non-conference struggle.

La. Monroe - 14
KANSAS - 38

*I know I picked against Monroe last week to lose to Alcorn State, but it's not like they blew out their 1AA opponent. The Warhawks only led by seven at halftime! Kansas is becoming a solid Big 12 program and will improve to 2-0 with ease in Lawrence.

OKLAHOMA ST. - 28
Arkansas State - 19

*Like Monroe, I picked against Arkansas State last week. Oklahoma State isn't as good as Kansas, but they are a better football team right now. The Cowboys will be losing at halftime though, so watch out Mike Gundy.

Florida Atlantic - 10
KANSAS STATE - 18

*The worst 2-0 start in the history of college football if you ask me. The Wildcats beat ILLINOIS STATE by one last week. It doesn't get any prettier with FAU. Don't worry, Ron Prince will lose his first game next - WAIT...can't give away any secrets.

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: I'm 6-2 in this league.

UNLV - 45
Iowa St. - 35

*Rocky Hinds is the perfect quarterback for Mike Sanford's spread offense. This is huge upset victory for the Rebels and could change the way many experts think of the Cyclones. After almost losing to Toledo at home - now this...ISU was very overrated in the preseason.

Tulsa - 28
BYU - 30

*I always hate to watch a great game come down to a field goal...but that's the case here. BYU's John Beck continues to play well and carries the Cougars offense into the win category with a perfectly executed late two-minute drill.

Air Force - 28
TENNESSEE - 45

*The party continues in Knoxville! Erik Ainge reminds folks why he was so heralded coming out of high school with another perfectly excuted gameplan. The Vols get the win and better enjoy it, because the Gators are coming to town!

NEW MEXICO - 20
New Mexico St. - 17

*There NO WAY the Lobos lose this rivalry game after being made fun of for a WEEK STRAIGHT!!! Losing to Portland State could end up being a good thing after all. Wait...no, no, I'm sorry - losing to Portland State is NEVER a good thing.

U.C. Davis - 13
TCU - 45

*Did you notice how much BETTER the Horned Frogs looked after Marcus Jackson (just a freshman) replaced Jeff Ballard (a senior) at quarterback? TCU scored all 17 points in the second half behind Jackson but he won't start against U.C. Davis. Keep in mind that Ballard is still undefeated as a starter and TCU remains the frontrunner to bust the BCS this season.

N. Arizona - 17
UTAH - 41

*Being blown-out in week one by UCLA was the last thing Northern Arizona needed. The Utes return home and blow out the Lumberjacks.

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE: I'm 10-1 in this league.

Central Michigan - 24
MICHIGAN - 27

*Don't be surprised if this one goes to overtime. Lloyd Carr's offense goes two straight weeks without eclipsing 200 yards passing despite having more talent than anyone else at the skill positions. Thankfully for fans of the Big Blue, Mike Hart saves the day...again.

Miami (OH) - 30
PURDUE - 42

*The Redhawks offense gets going against a terrible Boilermaker defense (gave up 35 points to Indiana State! A team that went 0-11 in 1AA last year!). Still, I like Joe Tiller's QB Curtis Painter. He's a great athlete that will continue putting points on the board this season in West Lafayette.

Akron - 17
N.C. STATE - 19

*Luke Getsy is a gamer at quarterback for the Zips. He'll give Akron a four-point lead at half-time and everything will look hunky-dorey until the Wolf Pack wake up and shut down the Zips in the second half. Nice start to the season for Chuck Amato.

Eastern Michigan - 13
MICHIGAN STATE - 52

*John L. Smith needs a blowout here. Barely holding off Idaho in your home opener isn't the best way to "show-off" in front of your fans in East Lansing. Spartan QB Drew Stanton will run the ball even more against EMU to open up the passing game (he had 55 yards rushing in week one).

Indiana - 35
BALL STATE - 38 (OT)

*You heard it here first! The Cardinals get their biggest win in decades over their in-state rival. Just think about the impact on recruiting this game will have! Oh, wait...have you ever been to Muncie? Never mind.

Buffalo - 13
BOWLING GREEN - 27

*Turner Gill has the Bulls playing better than ever. Unfortunately he still lacks talent and Bowling Green gets its' first win of the season.

Ohio - 14
N. ILLINOIS - 35

*The Huskies proved they have one of the more dynamic running backs in all of college football with Garrett Wolfe. After almost 300 yards of total offense against the nation's best team (Ohio State), this senior goes off at home against an Ohio team that can't move the football.

TOLEDO - 45
W. Michigan - 24

*The Rockets should of beaten Iowa State. Despite losing in overtime, that game was big momentum builder for Tom Amstutz's program. Expect Toledo to come out and put up big numbers behind their super sophomore quarterback Clint Cochran (367 yds. 3 TD passing last week).

KENT STATE - 10
Army - 9

*My heart tells me to go with Bobby Ross in this one. But after watching the Black Knights look so bad against a bad Arkansas State team, I'm going with my brain on this one. Granted, Kent State lost 44-0 to Minnesota too. But at least they played a real team. KSU freshman running back Eugene Jarvis has a huge game against Army and continues to look like the MAC's next great player (109 yds, 7.3 yds/carry).

INDEPENDANTS: I'm 3-1 picking the Independants.

Penn State - 17
NOTRE DAME - 31

*Are we beginning to notice a trend here? The Irish defense looked great against Georgia Tech and will force Penn St. QB Anthony Morelli into a few bad decisions. Charlie's offense wakes up a bit too - as the Irish finally pull away with 10 minutes left.

LOUISVILLE - 72
Temple - 10

*Michael Bush is injured - I know, that doesn't mean the Cardinals don't have enough fire power to make this one a joke to watch. Bobby Petrino uses Saturday as an oppurtunity to find out if either Kolby Smith, Anthony Allen or George Stripling want the starting RB position.

KENT STATE - 10
Army - 9

*My heart tells me to go with Bobby Ross in this one. But after watching the Black Knights look so bad against a bad Arkansas State team, I'm going with my brain on this one. UMass - 21
NAVY - 42

*Paul Johnson gets the Midshipmen off to another great start this season. The Mids power running game is better this year than last year with Brian Hampton at quarterback. Also, Adam Ballard is the best fullback Navy has had in years - and yes, that includes Kyle Eckel.
