34-20, I'm Getting Worse!

By Amsinger - October 16, 2006

Here are a few highlights from my "Week of Sorrow." I was 1-6 in Conference USA. Considering CSTV has a deal with CUSA my career may be in jeopardy. Virginia over Maryland was an "Upset Special" and after leading 20-0 the Cavs had diarrhea of the defense - THEY LOST! Arizona State teased me and lost in the 4th quarter to USC, while teams like Indiana, Vandy and Wyoming did the unthinkable and won games they shouldn't have.

All the while, my loyal readers (you) are smearing my face in this pathedic prognosticating display.

Thank you. Let's move on.

Take a look at how I've faired this season:

Week 1: 61-12
Week 2: 46-18
Week 3: 47-15
Week 4: 43-15
Week 5: 38-17
Week 6: 38-18
Week 7: 34-20

My overall record at the midway point of the season is 307-115.

Ready for a CORRECT prediction? 12 losses this week! That's it!

BIG TEN CONFERENCE: 5-1 last week, 47-11 in this league.

MICHIGAN ST. - 30
Northwestern - 17

*In the press conference after this game, John L. Smith spends 20 minutes talking about a play that should have been reviewed two weeks ago.

Indiana - 10
OHIO ST. - 45

*The Hoosiers won a varsity game last week. This week, they head back to the JV division of the Big Ten.

Illinois - 6
PENN ST. - 27

*I love picking Big Ten games. They boost my overall record. This is a perfect example.

North Dakota St. - 20
MINNESOTA - 35

*The Bison are 6-0, but barely beat Ball State. Gophers have a field day at home.

WISCONSIN - 20
Purdue - 16

*Good game, good stats for Purdue QB Curtis Painter and an even better game for Wisconsin RB P.J. Hill Jr. - who powers his way for 150 yards, 2 touchdowns and a tough Big Ten road victory.

Iowa - 14
MICHIGAN - 38

*I said it last week, the Hawkeyes are very overrated. IU's upset proved it. The Wolverines are clearly the second-best team in college football right now.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE: 4-2 last week, 47-11 in this league.

OLE MISS - 21
Arkansas - 20

UPSET SPECIAL #1

*Mitch Mustain remains unproven and the Rebels tasted a road upset last week in Tuscaloosa. Hog Heaven comes back to reality in Fayetteville.

S. CAROLINA - 23
Vanderbilt - 14

*Sure the Commodores beat Georgia in Athens, big deal. Seriously, Georgia would lose to the Gamecocks if they played again. Things are that bad for Mark Richt right now. Spurrier continues to find ways to win.

Fresno State - 14
LSU - 63

*Fresno is terrible right now. The Tigers really need more blow-out wins to boost their BCS ranking.

Mississippi St. - 17
GEORGIA - 27

*Sure I said Georgia is bad. But Mississippi State is way worse.

Tulane - 0
AUBURN - 41

*Here's the reward for beating Florida.

Alabama - 17
TENNESSEE - 35

*The Vols offense is way too much for the Tide's shaky defense that gave up over 20 points to an Ole Miss offense that was ranked 117th in division 1A football coming in.

PAC-TEN CONFERENCE: 3-2 last week, 33-13 overall in this league.

UCLA - 28
NOTRE DAME - 45

*Brady Quinn is back in the Heisman race after guys like Adrian Peterson (injury), Garrett Wolfe and Chris Leak bowed out. Charlie Weiss wants his quarterback to win the award...so much so, Quinn will be out there late in the 4th quarter.

Stanford - 7
ARIZONA ST. - 31

*Man, Stanford is terrible.

OREGON - 30
Wash. St. - 21

*After picking against the Ducks last week, I learned my lesson.

Washington - 24
CALIFORNIA - 41

*Cal is back and as good as any team in the nation.

Oregon St. - 10
ARIZONA - 13

*The Wildcats defense is really, really good. Mike Stoops picks up his second Pac-Ten victory at home by holding OSU RB Yvenson Bernard to just 40 yards on the ground.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE: 6-1 last week, 43-13 overall in this league.

N. Carolina - 16
VIRGINIA - 17

*This game will be so ugly, it could be decided on a missed extra point.

GEORGIA TECH - 37
Clemson - 28

*Give the Jackets the credit they deserve! Calvin Johnson scores THREE times and the GT defense forces Will Proctor to turn it over twice. Chan Gailey has the best team in the ACC!!!!

So. Miss. - 10
VA TECH - 27

*Sure the Hokies are down this year, but I'm not giving Southern Mississippi a chance in hell at winning this game.

Boston College - 23
FLORIDA STATE - 24

*Expect a classic finish. Drew Weatherford dominated Duke last week and barely get it done against B.C. this week.

MIAMI - 45
Duke - 0

*Don't be shocked if the brawl livens up this program.

N.C. State - 14
MARYLAND - 20

*With backs like Lattimore and Ball, the Terps have no business throwing the ball. They avoid my advice in the first half against the Wolfpack, then win the game with their backfield in the second (again).

BIG 12 CONFERENCE: 4-2 last week, 49-16 overall in this league.

TEXAS - 31
Nebraska - 13

*Unfortunately this won't be close. The Longhorns are proving they can still light up a scoreboard without Vince Young.

KANSAS - 24
Baylor - 21

*The Jayhawks need a win after losing the way they did against Oklahoma State.

Texas A&M - 28
OKLAHOMA ST. - 30

UPSET SPECIAL #2

*OSU wins on a last second field goal and head coach Mike Gundy is turning things around in Stillwater. The Aggies are very overrated despite beating Missouri at home.

Texas Tech - 20
IOWA STATE - 24

UPSET SPECIAL #3

*This is the first non-ranked Big 12 team ISU has played. The Cyclones were very overrated in the preseason, but so was Texas Tech. For crying out loud, the Red Raiders lost to Colorado.

Kansas St. - 14
MISSOURI - 31

*The Tigers offense is back and better than ever after stumbling in College Station.

COLORADO - 17
Oklahoma - 13

UPSET SPECIAL #4

*This is a given! After losing Peterson, even the Sooners see this upset special coming!

BIG EAST CONFERENCE: 4-2 last week, 36-10 overall in this league.

RUTGERS - 35
Pittsburgh - 24

*The Scarlet Knights are the third-best team in the Big East - no question anymore. After destroying the Mids in Annapolis and now this - Louisville and West Virginia better watch out!

S. FLORIDA - 24
Cincinnati - 16

*Matt Grothe is carrying the Bulls to a 6-2 mark! Does the Big East have FIVE legit teams? Yes!

LOUISVILLE - 30
Syracuse - 9

*Forget about an upset Orange fans. The Cardinals won't toy with you like Cincy.

W. VIRGINIA - 49
UConn - 3

*Steve Slaton deserves even more Heisman hype after a performance like this. Slaton gains 220 yards against the Huskies in the Mountaineers final tune-up before their Louisville battle.

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: 1-2 last week, 27-16 overall in this league.

UTAH - 27
New Mexico - 10

*After the "Wyoming Massacre" the Utes need to prove to their fans they're not as big of a flop as Fresno State.

UNLV - 17
BYU - 45

*The Cougars have won four in a row after this win and QB John Beck eclipses 400 yards in the air against the weak Rebel secondary.

Colorado St. - 13
WYOMING - 24

*According my sources (Cowboy fans), Wyoming's defense is better than everyone else's in the Mountain West. Therefore, with that "inside information" I'm taking the Cowboys - especially after slapping Utah in the face last week.

AIR FORCE - 37
San Diego St. - 17

*I'm out of the business of predicting Chuck Long's first win as Aztec head coach.

TCU - 41
Army - 10

*Losing in Salt Lake doesn't look the same after what Wyoming did to Utah last week. The Horned Frogs are about to play like themselves.

CONFERENCE USA: 1-6 last week, 38-22 overall in this league.

SMU - 17
ECU - 20

UPSET SPECIAL #5

*I picked against SMU last week and they burned me. I picked a WIN for East Carolina and they burned me. So I decided home field advantage will prevail once again.

TULSA - 38
Memphis - 17

*The Tigers are in a bad situation. Tulsa may be the best in the league. Watch how good the Golden Hurricane is Saturday at 8 ET on CSTV.

So. Miss. - 10
VA TECH - 27

*Sure the Hokies are down this year, but I'm not giving Southern Mississippi a chance in hell at winning this game.

Tulane - 0
AUBURN - 41

*Here's the reward for beating Florida.

Marshall - 9
UAB - 13

*I'll be ugly because both teams are playing ugly football right now.

UTEP - 42
Houston - 37

*The Cougars season is falling apart! After barely losing at Miami, Houston responded by losing to Louisiana Lafayette, Southern Mississippi and now UTEP. Tough times.

Rice - 24
UCF - 27

*The Owls proved me wrong last week and so did the Knights. This conference makes me cringe when it comes time to pick. Talk about PARITY!

WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: 3-1 last week, 34-11 overall in this league.

HAWAII - 51
New Mex. St. - 41

*What a fun game to watch, but aren't all Hawaii games like this? Jerry Glanville's defense plays like swiss cheese again for head coach June Jones. Still, a win is a win. 5-2 isn't bad for the Warriors.

San Jose St. - 21
NEVADA - 27

UPSET SPECIAL #6

The Wolf Pack haven't won a game in conference yet, but are a more battle-tested football team. San Jose State ends up with just its second loss of the year.

UTAH STATE - 14
La. Tech - 10

*The Aggies are playing much better! They lost to San Jose State by just seven and beat Fresno State on the road the week before. Louisiana Tech was hammered by Idaho at home. Big difference.

BOISE ST. - 41
Idaho - 13

*Ian Johnson adds three more touchdowns to his rediculous season stats.

Fresno State - 14
LSU - 63

*Fresno is terrible right now. The Tigers really need more blow-out wins to boost their BCS ranking.

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE: 4-2 last week, 40-19 overall in this league.

Buffalo - 24
OHIO - 34

*The Bobcats are getting better and better every week. Same goes for Buffalo, but the Bulls are still two years away from being competitive in this conference.

Temple - 7
N. ILLINOIS - 45

*Garrett Wolfe tries his best to get back in the Heisman race. 245 yards and 4 touchdowns will raise a few eyebrows.

Toledo - 19
E. MICHIGAN - 23

UPSET SPECIAL #7

*The Eagles win! The Eagles win! EMU wins its first win over a Toledo team that's ready for next season to start now.

Bowling Green - 24
C. MICHIGAN - 31

*The Falcons picked up a much needed win last week. The Chippewas stay undefeated in the MAC and may be the league's best.

W. MICHIGAN - 20
Ball State - 13

*The Broncos proves how good their defense is by shutting down Garrett Wolfe last week. Ball State is back to its old ways with a 2-6 record.

Miami (OH) - 14
AKRON - 26

*The Zips are falling apart after beating N.C. State on the road. They've lost three of their last four and need a win. QB Luke Getsy gets a huge home win in conference play.

SUN-BELT CONFERENCE: 3-1 last week, 31-10 overall in this league.

M. TENN. ST. - 27
La. Monroe - 17

*The Blue Raiders are still smiling from a strong performance at Louisville two weeks ago. They hung tough for a half. Great accomplishment for a Sun Belt program. Middle Tennessee State could be the class of this conference.

North Texas - 10
ARKANSAS ST. - 17

*The Indians have won three in a row and last week's road win over Memphis is one of their best in years. North Texas has something to prove, therefore this will be close.

LA. LAFAYETTE - 21
Florida Atlantic - 9

*Sure the Owls have won two in a row, but all good things must come to an end. The Ragin Cajuns are fresh off an upset win over Houston are simply too much.

INDEPENDENTS: 2-1 last week, 21-6 overall in this league.

Temple - 7
N. ILLINOIS - 45

*Garrett Wolfe tries his best to get back in the Heisman race. 245 yards and 4 touchdowns will raise a few eyebrows.

TCU - 41
Army - 10

*Losing in Salt Lake doesn't look the same after what Wyoming did to Utah last week. The Horned Frogs are about to play like themselves.
