40-16, I'm Bouncing Back!

By Amsinger - October 23, 2006

Solid, very solid. But let's be for real, I'm not in this game to be "solid." No - I want all of you proclaiming my prognosticating excellence. At the moment 40-16 sounds swell. If you ask me, I'm still in "Poor Picking Hell" and I want out!

In case you're a first time reader, I pick EVERY SINGLE Division 1A football game. I don't have to, sometimes I don't want to (because a few of you like reminding me of how bad I am at times) - but I do it.

Honestly, I love the hate mail. Some of you defend me, which is nice too. Bottom line, I want to provide a place ALL college football fans can turn to and read about their favorite team. For example, Colorado fans were psyched I had the Buffs beating OU (that didn't happen), Bobby Bowden was thankful I believed in him to beat Boston College (FSU boosters want him to retire after losing to BC), Ed Orgeron stopped grinding his teeth when he read my "upset special" of Ole Miss beating Arkansas in Fayetteville (Rebels lost 38-3) and Oregon fans want me to pick AGAINST their team after the Ducks were quacked in Pullman, Washington.

It wasn't all bad though.

Greg Schiano loved my pick of Rutgers winning on the road at Pitt, Mack Brown was thrilled with Texas over Nebraska and Skip Holtz is still tickled after I said East Carolina would beat SMU at home.

Check out how I've faired this season:

Week 1: 61-12
Week 2: 46-18
Week 3: 47-15
Week 4: 43-15
Week 5: 38-17
Week 6: 38-18
Week 7: 34-20
Week 8: 40-16

My overall record this season is 347-131.

Ready for Week 9?

BIG TEN CONFERENCE: 6-0 last week, 53-11 in this league.

Minnesota - 13
OHIO ST. - 27

*Don't expect a dominating blow out. After almost losing to North Dakota State at HOME, Glen Mason has the troops ready to play in Columbus. Troy Smith doesn't put up Heisman numbers against the Gophers.

Northwestern - 7
MICHIGAN - 49

*Hold on, does this convincing victory boost the Wolverines BCS ranking past Ohio State? Nobody is mentioning OSU's #1 vulnerability, it could take a hit after this Big Blue blowout.

Illinois - 10
WISCONSIN - 40

*The Badgers ground game is excellent. P.J. Hill Jr. racked up over 160 yards last week against Purdue, he'll top the 200 yard mark this week against the lowly Illini.

N. Illinois - 13
IOWA - 31

*Two weeks ago this would have been an "Upset Special." But Garrett Wolfe hasn't reached 50 yards rushing in his last two games! He couldn't get there against TEMPLE! The Huskies are in for a hurtin' in Iowa City.

Penn St. - 20
PURDUE - 23

UPSET SPECIAL #1

*Curtis Painter was held under 200 yards passing the first time this season against Wisconsin. Expect Purdue's signal-caller to EXPLODE against a Nittany Lion defense that gave up 347 yards to Minnesota QB Bryan Cupito three weeks ago.

MICHIGAN ST. - 42
Indiana - 31

*After the greatest comeback ever, John L. Smith has his troops focused on this week's opponent. HAHAHAHAHA!!!! - Yeah right, the Spartans are still talking about their 38 points in the second half against Northwestern. MSU will overlook the Hoosiers but will accidentally win on the road.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE: 5-1 last week, 52-12 in this league.

AUBURN - 28
Ole Miss - 0

*Typical Tiger-Rebel matchup. Ole Miss' offense is smashed and after the game Auburn QB Brandon Cox apologizes to Ole Miss LB Patrick Willis for playing on such a bad team.

Georgia - 6
FLORIDA - 20

*Bad timing for the Bulldogs to stink. The Gators fresh off a loss while Mark Richt's team is stinking up the doghouse in the Athens. If you go back to September 30th, the "results" are staggering. Georgia beat Ole Miss 14-9, lost to Tennessee 51-33, lost to Vandy 24-22 and beat Mississippi State 27-24. U-G-A-L-Y!!!

Tennessee - 24
S. CAROLINA - 26

UPSET SPECIAL #2

*What am I thinking? QB Erik Ainge played poorly against Alabama's "surprise" defense last week. It shows he's not the kind of quarterback who adjusts to the unexpected. Spurrier has a few tricks up his sleeve and can't wait to be the top story of "SEC Football Nation" - which airs on CSTV Saturday at 7pm ET. Yours truly hosts it.

VANDY - 13
Duke - 6

*The Blue Devils are still mourning the injured foot point guard Greg Paulus sustained last week.

Kentucky - 17
MISS. ST. - 20

UPSET SPECIAL #3

*The Bulldogs showed us something in Athens. Kentucky hasn't shown anyone anything since Tim Couch played there.

La. Monroe - 3
ARKANSAS - 42

*Sorry Hogs, I picked against you versus Ole Miss. I learned my lesson, Mitch Mustain gets the job done against this 1-6 Sun Belter.

Florida Int. - 0
ALABAMA - 17

*The Tide get the win in a hard-fought ballgame where FIU becomes the greatest 0-8 team of all time. Think about it, five losses by five points or less and their non-conference schedule consists of four BCS schools. Yeah, I know they fought with Miami - which isn't a good thing, but the Golden Panthers don't back down to anyone.

PAC-TEN CONFERENCE: 3-2 last week, 36-15 overall in this league.

USC - 30
Oregon St. - 21

*What a gross 7-0!!! This Trojan team can't put anyone away! I really want to pick the Beavers, but I've gone against the Trojans twice this season. I care about my record too much I guess.

WASH. ST. - 34
UCLA - 24

*After giving a game away in South Bend, the Bruins are going in the exact opposite direction than the Cougars. Washington State almost beat USC and smashed Oregon last week. QB Alex Brink is fresh off a 20-23 passing performance and freshman RB Dwight Tardy is one of the nation's brightest 19-year-olds. He rumbled for over 140 yards last week and notches a cool 160 in L.A.

Arizona State - 20
WASHINGTON - 24

*After losing three Pac-Ten games in a row the Huskies put an end to their slide. ASU is feeling spicy after a win over Stanford and a near-miss in Southern Cal two weeks ago. Put it together and you have a really good west coast game few will stay up to watch.

Portl. State - 17
OREGON - 51

*The Ducks are fuming after a loss to Washington State. Dennis Dixon combines for 400 yards of total offense against this 1AA dreamer.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE: 4-2 last week, 47-15 overall in this league.

CLEMSON - 23
Virginia Tech - 14

*Boston College exposed the Hokies up-and-down offense by holding Va Tech to just three points. Clemson just shut down Georgia Tech phenom receiver Calvin Johnson. He didn't catch a pass. Think about that for a second. CLEMSON WINS!

Miami - 21
GEORGIA TECH - 34

*Feel bad for the 'Canes. After Calvin Johnson laid an egg against Clemson, he's gonna go off for 200 yards receiving against the team formerly known as Larry Coker's.

Buffalo - 0
BOSTON COLLEGE - 35

*Easy pick. Sorry Bulls, it's not you - wait...it is you.

N.C. State - 13
VIRGINIA - 20

*The Wolfpack is falling apart after losses to Wake Forest and Maryland. I would never claim the Cavs are a good team. But the ACC bottom half is really bad, and this game proves it.

FLORIDA ST. - 17
Maryland - 9

UPSET SPECIAL #4

*I love calling FSU over Maryland an UPSET!!! The Terps may be the weakest 5-2 team in America. Seriously, if you consider every division 1A team with exactly a 5-2 mark it's interesting. Oregon, South Carolina, BYU, Hawaii, Navy, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Miami would all beat Maryland. It would be a crapshoot versus Kent State, Western Michigan and Arkansas State.

VANDY - 13
Duke - 6

*The Blue Devils are still mourning the injured foot point guard Greg Paulus sustained last week.

Wake Forest - 16
N. CAROLINA - 24

UPSET SPECIAL #5

*This is a sure thing! After John Bunting finds out he's losing his job, the Tar Heels win one for the Gipper! Chapel Hill tears down the goal posts and carry John off the field. Get ready to tear up.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE: 2-4 last week, 51-20 overall in this league.

Oklahoma - 20
MISSOURI - 38

*For the first time ever, this is NOT an "Upset Special" in Columbia! The Tigers are the second biggest (positive) surprise in college football next to Rutgers. QB Chase Daniel will win Conference Player of the Year. Seriously.

Colorado - 20
KANSAS - 21

*Two disappointing teams face off to determine which season should be forgotten first.

IOWA STATE - 31
Kansas State - 17

UPSET SPECIAL #6

*Ron Prince didn't stand a chance against Missouri. This week he faces an Iowa State team that doesn't own a conference win. QB Bret Meyer is a sleeping giant and the Cyclones FINALLY get it done!

TEXAS A&M - 27
Baylor - 13

*After going against the Aggies, I've learned my lesson. Dennis Franchione picks up his last regular season win. Say hello to Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas.

TEXAS - 41
Texas Tech - 17

*This game is close for the 1st quarter. Then Colt McCoy boosts his Heisman stock - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Sorry, I had to throw that in there.

Nebraska - 27
OKLAHOMA ST. - 28

UPSET SPECIAL #7

*Mike Gundy lost to the Aggies on a blocked extra point. The Cowboys are starting to believe they SHOULD win. Nebraska meanwhile, is still choked up after last week's disastrous 4th quarter against the Longhorns. This game is an afterthought. Not anymore.

BIG EAST CONFERENCE: 3-1 last week, 39-11 overall in this league.

Syracuse - 20
CINCINNATI - 24

*The Bearcats impressed me with a win over USF. Cincy shutdown the Bulls passing/running game entirely. Mark Dantonio's bunch will do the same to Greg Robinson and his Orange.

UConn - 7
RUTGERS - 41

*8-0? 8-0? Give it up to my "peeps" in Piscataway. Isn't it funny I've picked against the Knights three times this season and all of the sudden they're my "peeps?" - I love it.

CONFERENCE USA: 4-3 last week, 42-25 overall in this league.

UTEP - 27
TULSA - 45

*Okay! Okay! Okay! My preseason pick of UTEP finishing the season ranked 16th in the nation isn't going to happen! Okay! Okay! Okay! The Miners will NOT win CUSA! Since I'm not a hard-headed prognosticator I'm finally picking against Mike Price. Tulsa is way too good.

UCF - 14
HOUSTON - 31

*The Knights are having a terrible season after shocking the world last year. The Cougars will be 4-1 in CUSA and will be ready for next week's showdown with Tulsa.

East Carolina - 20
SO. MISSISSIPPI - 34

*ECU is playing well right now. Unfortunately for the Pirates, the Golden Eagles are a sleeper to win this conference. They're the most battle-tested team and SHOULD win out to end the regular season.

Army - 13
TULANE - 14

*Close game. Doesn't make it a good game.

Memphis - 23
MARSHALL - 35

*Nice win for the Thundering Herd last week against UAB. The Tigers are clearly the worst team in CUSA.

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: 3-2 last week, 30-18 overall in this league.

BYU - 40
Air Force - 23

*Who smells 10-2? Cougar fans do! Check out the BYU schedule, it looks that way. Two days after Thanksgiving will be the test. Can the Cougars get their 10th win in Salt Lake City against the Utes? Hmmm...

WYOMING - 24
Texas Christian - 14

UPSET SPECIAL #8

*The Cowboys are on fire! After losing four in a row, Wyoming has won its' last three games by a combined score of 69-25. The defense finally woke up and the Cowboys are having frog legs for dinner!

UNLV - 16
UTAH - 17

*The Utes are falling apart! This scare makes folks in Salt Lake miss Urban Meyer that much more.

New Mexico - 20
COLORADO ST. - 31

*Winning at CSU isn't easy. The Rams are 3-0 at home and after being shut-out by Wyoming, the offense comes alive against the Lobos.

Cal Poly - 16
SAN DIEGO ST. - 35

*The Aztecs have a winning streak! It's rare for me to be happy when I'm wrong on a pick, that was the case last week when SDSU gave head coach Chuck Long his first Aztec win over Air Force. When you consider the Falcons lost by one to Tennessee in Knoxville - that win shines even brighter to me.

WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: 4-1 last week, 38-12 overall in this league.

New Mexico St. - 42
NEVADA - 48

*Whew! What a nail-biter! The Aggies can score with the best of 'em and Nevada is one of the stronger teams in the WAC. The Aggies are an exciting team to watch.

Idaho - 27
HAWAII - 48

*The Warriors will be 6-2 after this win and are proof that good coaching in the college ranks is worth its weight in gold. June Jones and Jerry Glanville have it going on in their retirement jobs.

Louisiana Tech - 13
SAN JOSE ST. - 24

*After a hard-fought loss to Nevada, the Spartans prove they're one of the toughest teams in the WAC. If you consider Boise State, Hawaii, Nevada and now - San Jose State...this conference is improving...fast.

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE: 6-0 last week, 46-19 overall in this league.

Akron - 30
TOLEDO - 31

UPSET SPECIAL #9

*The Rockets haven't won a conference game. This is about to change. Akron is stumbling into the Glass Bowl after barely beating lowly Miami and will fall flat once again on the road.

Ohio - 27
KENT ST. - 30

*I've picked against the Golden Flashes numerous times this season and I've learned my lesson. Sure they lost to Army in week two, but KSU has won five straight! As of right now, they're the best team in the MAC and since they're playing at home - Frank Solich is going down!

Eastern Michigan - 14
W. MICHIGAN - 27

*I just said Kent State is the best team in the MAC, they're competing with the Broncos! LB Ameer Ismail tied an NCAA record with six sacks against Ball State and expect three more against a 1-6 Eastern Michigan team.

Bowling Green - 24
TEMPLE - 27

UPSET SPECIAL #10

*This is it!!! The streak ends here!!! I had a feeling 1AA Indiana State would end the nation's longest losing streak (21 games) last week and the Sycamores pulled it off. I can feel this upset in my mustache (yeah, I need a shave) and PLEASE Temple students - go to the game so you can celebrate the upset special of the year. TEMPLE WINS! TEMPLE WINS! TEMPLE WINS!

BALL ST. - 42
Miami (OH) - 21

*How do you allow ONE guy to sack your quarterback SIX TIMES!!!?? Leave it to Ball State. The Cards get the win this week because the Redhawks are even worse than they are.

Buffalo - 0
BOSTON COLLEGE - 35

*Easy pick. Sorry Bulls, it's not you - wait...it is you.

SUN-BELT CONFERENCE: 3-0 last week, 34-10 overall in this league.

M. TENN. ST. - 17
La. Lafayette - 9

*The Blue Raiders are the best team in the Sun Belt. That's not saying much. Still, the Rajin' Cajuns aren't offensively capable to hang with Middle Tennessee State.

N. Texas - 9
TROY - 20

*The Trojans may have a 2-4 record, but they're undefeated in the Sun Belt! North Texas is a huge disappointment after boasting one of the best rushing attacks in America last year. Troy wins at home and improves to 2-0 in conference play.

ARKANSAS ST. - 31
Florida Atlantic - 14

*Give it up to the Arkansas State Indians, this is their 5th straight win! They're right up there with Middle Tennessee State, but aren't as battle-tested as the Blue Raiders. Mark your calendars for November 11th - the Sun Belt Super Bowl!!!! Arkansas State vs. Middle Tennessee State! Like WWE, whoever is left standing...wears the Belt!

La.

INDEPENDENTS: 3-0 last week, 24-6 overall in this league.

NOTRE DAME - 38
Navy - 17

*If QB Brian Hampton was healthy, I'd be looking forward to this game. Since he's out - I'm not. Irish win easily.

Army - 13
TULANE - 14

*Close game. Doesn't make it a good game.
