Same Old, Same Old...34-19

By Amsinger - October 30, 2006

So many highlights last week, picking Temple over Bowling Green rocked. Taking Oklahoma State over Nebraska made me grin and watching Virginia put a theoretical end to the Chuck Amato era made yet another prediction look swell. Still, I finished 34-19.

How? Florida State losing to Maryland didn't help. Who REALLY expected Indiana over Michigan State after the greatest comeback of all time? And Oregon State beating USC after I picked USC to WIN for the first time in three weeks continues to burn.

Check out how I've faired this season:

Week 1: 61-12
Week 2: 46-18
Week 3: 47-15
Week 4: 43-15
Week 5: 38-17
Week 6: 38-18
Week 7: 34-20
Week 8: 40-16
Week 9: 34-19

My overall record this season is 381-150.

I'm smellin' a 42-10 record this week.

What?

STOP LAUGHING!!!!!

Read my week 10 picks and weep.

BIG TEN CONFERENCE: 4-2 last week, 57-13 in this league.

Ball State - 6
MICHIGAN - 34

*The Wolverines can eye the prize. They want a perfect 11-0 record heading to Columbus and lowly Ball State will not get in their way...at all.

OHIO ST. - 31
Illinois - 13

*The Buckeyes can eye the prize too.

INDIANA - 34
Minnesota - 24

*Give Terry Hoeppner credit, he finally gave the keys to his offense to redshirt freshman quarterback Kellen Lewis. This kid is the real deal and so are the Hoosiers...for another week at least.

Penn State - 13
WISCONSIN - 14

*Another great low-scoring Big Ten battle. The defenses are a wash, in the end P.J. Hill Jr. outruns Tony Hunt. Big win for Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema.

PURDUE - 45
Michigan St. - 31

*Can't go with the Spartans anymore. MSU's players care more about who will be their next head coach than the Boilermakers.

N'Western - 14
IOWA - 27

*The Wildcats hung in there with Michigan. The Hawkeyes will finally wear down this depleted team.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE: 5-2 last week, 57-14 in this league.

ARKANSAS - 20
South Carolina - 17

*Steve Spurrier loses another close one in the SEC. The Hogs continue to win despite a lack of production from freshman QB Mitch Mustain. The kid isn't winning any games for head coach Houston Nutt. Thankfully for fans in Fayetteville, RB Darren McFadden is the front-runner for SEC Player of the Year.

Georgia - 23
KENTUCKY - 27

UPSET SPECIAL #1

*Rich Brooks is carried off the field in Lexington! According to the Wildcats schedule, with this upset special - they'll finish 7-5! Can you say bowl game?! Can you say another year for Rich Brooks?! Oh yeah, don't feel bad for Georgia either, they'll be back next year.

N'Western St. - 10
OLE MISS - 23

*Ed Orgeron reaches last year's win total by beating his alma mater. Wow, talk about giving back.

Arkansas St. - 14
AUBURN - 40

*The Indians are coming off their worst performance of the season. Losing to a 2-5 Florida Atlantic team won't scare Auburn. The Tigers roll and get warmed up for Georgia.

LSU - 20
Tennessee - 7

*The Tigers defense gives up just 175 yards passing per game. At the moment, passing the football is the only weapon Tennessee has. The Vols haven't rushed for 75 yards in either of their last two games. The pressure is on JeMarcus Russell to play well on national TV and he comes through for Les Miles.

Miss. State - 9
ALABAMA - 13

*Bring the Tums, this one will give you heartburn.

FLORIDA - 28
Vanderbilt - 10

*Don't expect a blowout. The Commodores defense hangs in the first half, then Tim Tebow runs wild. I know I talk about Tebow too much, I'm just recognizing talent. This kid will win a Heisman before he's done in Gainesville.

PAC-TEN CONFERENCE: 1-3 last week, 37-18 overall in this league.

USC - 62
Stanford - 10

*How pissed was Walt Harris when he found out Oregon State beat USC? If being 0-8 wasn't bad enough.

Arizona - 17
WASH ST. - 31

*Starting to believe in the Cougars, I must admit. Hold on, this team is REALLY good. After this victory, WSU will be 7-3 with its only losses to Auburn, USC and California. With Arizona State and Washington left, Pullman may be celebrating a 9-3 season.

Arizona State - 27
OREGON ST. - 38

*Good luck trying to beat the Beavers from here on out! Without the services of banged-up running back Yvenson Bernard, OSU still beat an undefeated USC team. There is NO WAY the Beavers experience a let-down at home after that historic victory. This pick is a lock.

UCLA - 24
CAL - 49

*How many times have I said Cal is the best team in the Pac-Ten? Five to be exact. The Bears rush for a few scores, throw a couple bombs for a few more touchdowns, return a punt for a touchdown, intercept a pass for a touchdown, and somehow figure out how to kick for a touchdown in this one.

Washington - 34
OREGON - 38

*The Huskies are up to the challenge against the Ducks. Home field advantage gives Dennis Dixon the extra boost he needs to bring the quack attack back.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE: 4-3 last week, 51-18 overall in this league.

Maryland - 14
CLEMSON - 34

*Sorry Terps. Last week was great and all, but you're heading to Death Valley after the Tigers lived through a hellacious week of practice. BLOW-OUT.

BOSTON CO. - 27
Wake Forest - 21

*Wake plays everyone close - and I mean EVERYONE! Beat Syracuse by ten, Duke by ONE, N.C. State by two and lowly North Carolina by just seven. Like Clemson, the Deacons will hang around. Boston College is just a better football team.

GEORGIA TECH - 24
North Carolina St. - 10

*How underrated is the Tech defense? They have their moments (Clemson) where the yards and touchdowns pile up, but for the most part this unit has been a pleasant surprise for head coach Chan Gailey. This victory should will help cement the Jackets spot in the ACC Championship game in Jacksonville. With North Carolina, Duke and Georgia left - I can smell a 10-2 record. Wait, didn't I predict that in the preseason? Yup.

North Carolina - 14
NOTRE DAME - 45

*The Brady Quinn highlight reel played during the Heisman presentation will come soley from this game.

Virginia Tech - 17
MIAMI - 21

UPSET SPECIAL #2

*Beating Miami IN Miami isn't easy just because the 'Canes are in a down year. Larry Coker can't afford to lose at home. Freshman RB Jevarris James needs to carry the ball 30-35 times for Miami to win.

NAVY - 31
Duke - 10

*Do you know what's funny? The Blue Devils will be 0-9 after this loss and you won't find a single rumor that head coach Ted Roof is on the hot seat. Why? Because so few care about Duke football, even the beat writers that think this stuff up could care less.

Virginia - 3
FLORIDA ST. - 17

*This game is very important for Bobby Bowden. If he lost to Virginia at home, the boosters would come down to the field after the game - tie Bobby up, ship him to some gorgeous island where hired staff is waiting to take care of his every need and he has no contact with the outside world. All the boosters want is to give Bobby a "taste" of retirement just to see if he'd like it. And if he didn't? Well, he better like it.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE: 3-3 last week, 54-23 overall in this league.

Baylor - 17
TEXAS TECH - 42

*The Red Raiders are grouchy after handing away an upset over Texas. Baylor meanwhile, lost their senior leader QB Shawn Bell to a knee injury. So let's see, a pissed off Texas Tech facing a depleted Baylor team = easy pick.

OKLAHOMA - 35
Texas A&M - 20

*The Sooners proved me wrong last week in Columbia by beating Mizzou. Bob Stoops continously reminds us that he has depth at all positions and it shows. The ground game being equally effective WITHOUT Adrian Peterson is proof. OU exposes the most overrated 8-1 team in college football.

Oklahoma St. - 21
TEXAS - 45

*Sure the Cowboys beat Nebraska and since I picked them to do so I was happy, but winning in Austin is a different story. Mike Gundy is a great, young head coach - but his talent level is still two years away from competing with the Longhorns.

KANSAS - 23
Iowa State - 21

*Last second field goal sends the Cyclones home heaving after another loss. 3-7? 3-7 after a preseason #2 in the Big 12 North Division? WOW. What a disappointment.

MISSOURI - 34
Nebraska - 31

UPSET SPECIAL #3

*Okay, the records don't say "upset," but for the Tigers to go into Lincoln and win for the first time since 1978 (14 games) it's a rare accomplishment. Mizzou forgot it had a couple good running backs last week against Oklahoma. RB's Tony Temple and Earl Goldsmith combined for seven carries for just one yard. If Chase Daniel gets the green light to hand off more than 20 times, the Tigers will win the game.

Kansas State - 23
COLORADO - 24

UPSET SPECIAL #4

*KSU head coach Ron Prince can smell a bowl game. With a 5-4 record he needs just one more victory. Dan Hawkins needs a win to keep his sanity. The Buffs find the same magic that handed Texas Tech a 30-6 loss in Boulder. This will be Colorado's first home game since that upset.

BIG EAST CONFERENCE: 2-0 last week, 41-11 overall in this league.

PITTSBURGH - 38
South Florida - 27

*The Panthers find their offensive rhythm after being held to 10 points by Rutgers two weeks ago. QB Tyler Palko shows redshirt freshman QB Matt Grothe a thing or two about being "NFL good" - which Tyler is.

West Virginia - 27
LOUISVILLE - 30

*Classic matchup delivers a classic ending. QB Brian Brohm uses the national stage to prove how special he really is. Expect huge 4th down completions to bring the Cardinals back after being down 27-16 after three quarters. The electric atmosphere in Louisville will be a huge factor Thursday night. Bobby Petrino's defense bends, but doesn't break against Rich Rodriguez's juggernaut spread offense.

CONFERENCE USA: 4-1 last week, 46-26 overall in this league.

UAB - 16
SMU - 28

*Both teams are out of the CUSA race. What's left to play for? Coaching jobs. Phil Bennett can't afford a loss to UAB with Houston and Tulsa coming to town. Ending a season at Rice isn't as easy as it used to be either. A possible 4-8 record won't help job security...even at SMU.

ECU - 24
UCF - 21

*How is it UCF is reverting back to its' '04-'05 ways? George O'Leary has plenty of young players and they're learning on the job. Unfortunately for fans in Orlando, their latest job performance equals 2-7.

Rice - 24
UTEP - 35

*The Miners have a legitimate superstar in WR Johnnie Lee Higgins. 16 catches for 275 yards in his last two games! Rice is improving, but losing to Tulane was a setback. Mike Price gets a much needed win in UTEP's quest for another bowl game.

Tulsa - 35
HOUSTON - 38

*Go ahead and try to beat QB Kevin Kolb in his final home game at Houston. Tulsa will give it their best shot, but the Cougars will win this for their record-setting quarterback. Don't miss this back-and-forth classic, it kicks off Saturday at 3:30pm ET on CSTV.

SO. MISS. - 27
Memphis - 17

*The Eagles are still wondering how they lost to ECU at home last week. Playing for their CUSA Eastern Division lives, Southern Miss shows up in Memphis and walks away with a win.

Tulane - 23
MARSHALL - 35

*With ECU and Southern Miss still on their schedule, the Thundering Herd still have a shot at claiming the East Division crown. RB Ahmad Bradshaw is one of the best running backs nobody is talking about. The junior surpasses the 1,000 yard plateau in this CUSA matchup televised by CSTV at 7:30pm ET.

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: 2-3 last week, 32-21 overall in this league.

Air Force - 16
ARMY - 20

UPSET SPECIAL #5

*A great rivalry game goes to the home team. True freshman quarterback Carson Williams sends off the senior Black Knights with an emotional win over the Force.

TCU - 35
UNLV - 20

*The Horned Frogs are just better than the Rebels. Wait, most of division one football is better than the Rebels.

San Diego St. - 7
WYOMING - 27

*The Cowboys defense stomps the State out of San Diego. The Aztecs limp into this game after losing to a 1AA opponent last week.

BYU - 41
Colorado St. - 28

*The Cougars are just better than everyone else in this conference. I have a feeling they'll run the Mountain West table and finish the regular season with a convincing road win over Utah. Until then, they smash the Rams.

WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: 3-0 last week, 37-11 overall in this league.

Fresno State - 28
BOISE STATE - 45

*Another tough opponent, another loss for head coach Pat Hill. The Bulldogs are coasting to an awful 2-10 record. Boise State is trying to prove it belongs in the BCS picture. Unfortunately playing "bad" Fresno State's won't help the Broncos BCS ranking.

LA. TECH - 19
N. Texas - 17

*Both teams come in with identical 2-6 records. The Bulldogs are just more competitive right now. Despite being blown out by San Jose St. last week, Tech beat Utah State and only lost to Idaho by ten. Before that??? Well, forget it.

SAN JOSE STATE - 47
New Mexico State - 28

*Sure the Aggies can score in bunches but they forgot to field a defense. SJSU is clearly the 3rd best team in the WAC. Hooray for you Dick Tomey.

HAWAII - 63
Utah St. - 13

*That Jerry Glanville defense is beginning to click!! Sorry Dick Tomey, but the WARRIORS are the WAC's 2nd best team. June Jones is doing the hoola dance over that observation.

Nevada - 27
IDAHO - 28

UPSET SPECIAL #6

*The Vandals are back! Dennis Erickson making huge strides in his first season back as head coach and this upset special earns an extra large Gatorade shower.

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE: 6-1 last week, 52-20 overall in this league.

KENT ST. - 24
Buffalo - 14

*The Golden Flashes burned me last week when they lost at home to Ohio, snapping a five game winning streak. Their stagnant offense reminded me of week two when they scored just 14 points and lost to Army. I have a feeling KSU gets back on track against Turner Gill and his one-win Bulls.

Bowling Green - 23
AKRON - 31

*After losing to Temple (which I predicted) the Falcons are drowning. The season can't end fast enough. Just about the same story for Akron, who is a depressing 2-4 since upsetting N.C. State in Raleigh. While the Zips may be struggling, they didn't lose to TEMPLE!

OHIO - 17
E. Michigan - 10

*Frank Solich likes low scoring games. He won't like this one, because his Bobcats should blow-out the 1-7 Eagles. Regardless of the score, Ohio improves to 5-1 in conference play and own the tie-breaker in the MAC East Division over Kent State.

C. MICHIGAN - 31
Temple - 21

*I thought about two in a row! I swear I did! The Chippewas eventually end the dream for the Owls who remain the nation's sweetheart story. They're like the kid picked last in kick-ball each and every day in P.E. class and one day kicks it over the fence for a home run.

Miami (OH) - 13
W. MICHIGAN - 20

*The Broncos scared me last week by barely beating lowly Eastern Michigan. Expect more of the same this week, but still - a 7-2 record can't be ignored. Unfortunately for fans in Kalamazoo, their Broncos are on the road to end the regular season after the Miami game. Two of those are at Central Michigan (should be a loss) and Florida State (ouch...that'll hurt).

Ball State - 6
MICHIGAN - 34

*The Wolverines can eye the prize. They want a perfect 11-0 record heading to Columbus and lowly Ball State will not get in their way...at all.

SUN-BELT CONFERENCE: 4-1 last week, 38-11 overall in this league.

LA. TECH - 19
N. Texas - 17

*Both teams come in with identical 2-6 records. The Bulldogs are just more competitive right now. Despite being blown out by San Jose St. last week, Tech beat Utah State and only lost to Idaho by ten. Before that??? Well, forget it.

Arkansas St. - 14
AUBURN - 40

*The Indians are coming off their worst performance of the season. Losing to a 2-5 Florida Atlantic team won't scare Auburn. The Tigers roll and get warmed up for Georgia.

La. Lafayette - 13
TROY - 24

*The Trojans are undefeated in conference play and have won two in a row. I love the way Troy's defense is playing - completely stuffing the run. Last week they held North Texas back Jamario Thomas to 23 yards on 18 carries. Those are Edgerrin James numbers! Terrible! Expect more of the same this weekend in Alabama.

Florida Atlantic - 17
M. TENNESSEE ST. - 34

*The Blue Raiders are 4-0 in conference and will be 5-0 after this walk in the park. With seniors Clint Morris (QB) and Eugene Gross (RB), Middle Tennessee State has the leadership on the offensive side of the ball to win this conference.

INDEPENDENTS: 3-0 last week, 27-6 overall in this league.

North Carolina - 14
NOTRE DAME - 45

*The Brady Quinn highlight reel played during the Heisman presentation will come soley from this game.

NAVY - 31
Duke - 10

*Do you know what's funny? The Blue Devils will be 0-9 after this loss and you won't find a single rumor that head coach Ted Roof is on the hot seat. Why? Because so few care about Duke football, even the beat writers that think this stuff up could care less.

Air Force - 16
ARMY - 20

UPSET SPECIAL #5

*A great rivalry game goes to the home team. True freshman quarterback Carson Williams sends off the senior Black Knights with an emotional win over the Force.
