Unfortunate Consistency, on to Week 7!

By Amsinger - October 09, 2006

38-18. A record Joe Torre would be fired for is all I have to show for my week six performance. I'm still celebrating a few nice calls like Tennessee over Georgia, Cal over Oregon and East Carolina over Virginia. But all in all, it was another rough week "Off Prompter."

So many stumbles to talk about, the worst being (#1) Purdue over Iowa - I'm sorry Hawkeyes. (#2) TCU stumbles in Salt Lake, the (#3) Fighting Illini reminds us how bad things are in Champaign by losing to Indiana, the (#4) Rebels finally play well at home against Vandy, (#5) North Texas wins an overtime classic against FIU and (#6) Oregon State can't find the endzone at home against Washington State. The Big 12 Conference really slammed me with four sour picks, including (#7) Texas over Oklahoma, (#8) Texas A&M holding on in Lawrence, (#9) Oklahoma State losing on the road against Kansas State and (#10) Colorado losing AGAIN...this time to Baylor. Few expected (#11) Arkansas to upset Auburn, or (#12) Louisiana-Lafayette knocking off Houston. The biggest upset in my mind, was (#13) Utah State beating Fresno State...that burned me. (#14) Southern Miss losing to Tulsa hurt, so did (#15) Idaho beating New Mexico State. (#16) Ball State proves me wrong AGAIN by beating Buffalo, a stinkin' extra point kept (#17) Minnesota from sending Penn State to overtime and (#18) Bobby Bowden hooks up his boy Chuck Amato by losing to N.C. State.

I really want that paragraph to be smaller next week. Here's a look at how I've faired this season:

Week 1: 61-12
Week 2: 46-18
Week 3: 47-15
Week 4: 43-15
Week 5: 38-17
Week 6: 38-18

My overall record at the midway point of the season is 273-95.

It's time for me to step up my game, let's see how I fair in week seven.

BIG TEN CONFERENCE: 3-3 last week, 42-10 in this league.

PURDUE - 30
N'Western - 17

*The Boilermakers made me look like an idiot vs. Iowa. While making me look foolish isn't exactly hard, Joe Tiller's bunch better shape up if they want my support for the rest of the season. Expect Purdue QB Curtis Painter to throw for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns along with RB Korey Sheets adding to his 9 touchdowns on the season.

IOWA - 51
Indiana - 14

*The Hawkeyes bounced back from losing to Ohio State the exact OPPOSITE way I expected. Give the Hawkeyes props, they're pretty mean after they lose. As for Indiana...they're pretty generous after they win. Expect 5 Hoosier turnovers in route to a ROUTE!!! - Hawkeyes are playing for a legit bowl game.

Minnesota - 17
WISCONSIN - 27

*No offense Iowa City, but the football freaks in Madison are better. Therefore, I am proclaiming Wisconsin the Big Ten's THIRD BEST TEAM!!! Hoooray! Again, only Iowa fans would care about that statement. Please join me in celebrating the nation's best redshirt freshman in P.J. Hill Jr. - this kid is one of the top running backs in the nation! But, I'm beginning to wonder if it's the "system." Few Texas Tech quarterbacks get recognition for leading the nation in passing yards thanks to Mike Leach's system...the same could be said in Madison.

OHIO - 27
Illinois - 23

*The Bobcats are down 13 going into the 4th quarter and the Illini remind us AGAIN how bad they are. How in the world is John L. Smith keeping his job at Michigan State after losing at home to these guys?

OHIO STATE - 45
Michigan St. - 13

*The Buckeye defense has yet to surrender more than 17 points in a single game. Only two teams have scored in double-digits against OSU. There's so much debate over who should be number-two in the polls, which is funny because no team is close to being considered for the top-spot with Ohio State. It's Jim Tressel's to lose.

MICHIGAN - 20
Penn State - 7

*It'll be ugly, but if you're a Wolverine fan - who cares? WR Mario Manningham may miss this game, but luckily Michigan has more talent at the skill positions than any other team in America. Mike Hart finds a way to get it done. He's my #1 Heisman candidate. Yes, over Ohio State's Troy Smith. Without Hart, the Wolverines aren't in the top ten.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE: 5-2 last week, 43-9 in this league.

Vanderbilt - 3
GEORGIA - 20

*The Bulldogs defense is back! Thank goodness, I was worried those kidnappers would never be caught! How in the WORLD did Tennessee score 51 points in Athens? Sorry Commodores, you let me down against a very beatable Ole Miss bunch and after a Volunteer thrashing - the Dawgs are raging mad.

Ole Miss - 13
ALABAMA - 16

*Don't think for a second the Tide actually win this game on a field goal. The score should read 17-13, but Jamie Christensen misses the extra point. Kenneth Darby is back on track after racking up 115 yards against Duke last week. He gains 140 yards in this key SEC win for Mike Shula.

FLORIDA - 21
Auburn - 10

*The Gators are the best team in the SEC. Period. This game will prove to thousands of Tiger fans that Arkansas really didn't ruin their season, it was destined to be ruined anyway. Tim Tebow scores another touchdown and after the game is cast opposite Jennifer Anniston in a new romantic comedy.

Jacksonville St. - 24
MISSISSIPPI ST. - 28

*Don't think this will be a blowout, because it won't. The Bulldogs are still finding their identity while JSU already knows it's status in 1AA football. Sylvester Croom may walk away looking at this like a loss more than a win.

SE Mo. State - 13
ARKANSAS - 45

*Darren McFadden is the nation's most talented sophomore. He rushes for 210 yards and 3 touchdowns in this Fayetteville laugher. Mitch Mustain continues to quietly thrive as a true freshman. Arkansas is a SEC power? I did see Hogs fly in Auburn last week, so anything can happen.

Kentucky - 7
LSU - 30

*Sure, the Wildcats can score points but so could the NY Jets when they entered their recent game with Jacksonville. The point is, when you FINALLY play a "real" defense, things change. The Tigers are so pissed off after losing their 2nd game of the season - knowing their national title hopes are over. Therefore, head coach Rich Brooks better have his guys ready for a brutal beat-down.

PAC-TEN CONFERENCE: 4-1 last week, 30-11 overall in this league.

OREGON ST. - 27
Washington - 24

UPSET SPECIAL #1

*SNAP THE BALL!!!! SNAP THE BALL!!! For crying out loud the Huskies had two seconds!!! After a loss like that to USC I expect a huge drop-off from the Huskies this week. Oregon State is fresh off a horrible home performance against Washington State and will be ready to go on the road. RB Yvenson Bernard needs to touch the ball 30-35 times a game for the Beavers to be successful.

CALIFORNIA - 41
Washington St. - 20

*Again, this is the team I thought would contend in the preseason for a national title. Sure the Vols knocked the snot out of the Bears to open the season, but keep in mind...most of this Cal team is young. QB Nate Longshore is just a sophomore, so is his favorite target WR DeSean Jackson and Marshawn Lynch is just a junior. Go ahead and watch Cal finish 11-1.

ARIZONA ST. - 31
Southern Cal. - 30

UPSET SPECIAL #2

*The Sun Devils enter this game as serious underdogs and without a chance in hell at winning. I LOVE IT!!! Sure they lost to Cal and Oregon by a combined score of 97-34, that just means they're due. Likewise for the USC Trojans who beat Washington State and Washington a combined 54-42. They're due for a LOSS! QB Rudy Carpenter chucks the pigskin 50 times for 345 yards and 4 touchdowns in this monumental victory for head coach Dirk Koetter.

UCLA - 45
Oregon - 41

UPSET SPECIAL #3

*Talk about a buzz-kill! The Ducks were thinking national title and now they're thinking about the 2007 season! Defensively this a bad team. QB Dennis Dixon is great and so is RB Jonathan Stewart, but this is not a balanced team. As for the Bruins, their only loss to Washington doesn't look so shabby after the Huskies scare in Southern Cal last week. Big win for head coach Karl Dorrell. 5-1 without so much talent from a year ago is amazing.

ARIZONA - 23
Stanford - 10

*The Wildcats may be dealing with QB injury problems but luckily they're playing Stanford. Give the Cardinal credit, they played well for awhile against Notre Dame. Still, 0-6 is absolutely unacceptable. Whoops, I mean 0-7 after this home defeat. Sorry for the goof, just call me Walt Harris.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE: 5-1 last week, 37-12 overall in this league.

USF - 31
N. Carolina - 23

*Matt Grothe had another amazing performance against UConn. He threw just three incomplete passes and had a total of FOUR TOUCHDOWNS! This redshirt freshman is the future face of the Big East Conference and he goes on the road and wins one on Tobacco Road.

Maryland - 10
VIRGINIA - 12

UPSET SPECIAL #4

*I do a weekly radio show with guys in Baltimore and they're going to kill me over this upset special, but it's gonna happen. After pushing Georgia Tech to the brink the Terps run into a Cavalier team that is playing for an ounce of pride after losses to East Carolina and Western Michigan this season. QB Sam Hollenbach throws 4 picks in the loss.

Virginia Tech - 17
BOSTON COLLEGE - 20

UPSET SPECIAL #5

*Winning a game in Chestnut Hill is tough, ask Clemson. The Hokies were exposed against Georgia Tech two weeks ago and so were the Eagles. The deciding factor in this one? Home field advantage. QB Matt Ryan throws for 230 yards against a very good Va Tech defense.

FLORIDA ST. - 42
Duke - 0

*Poor Blue Devils. Hey, here's some good news for head coach Ted Roof. The Blue Devils are ranked in the top ten in CSTV.com's Men's Basketball Preseason Poll.

Temple - 3
CLEMSON - 72

*Please Tommy Bowden, don't hurt the Owls too bad.

WAKE FOREST - 19
N.C. State - 13

*The Demon Deacons proved they're legit after giving Clemson a serious scare. Chuck Amato's teams always play to their level of competition and after beating Boston College and Florida State, it about time the Wolf Pack come back to reality.

FIU - 13
MIAMI - 41

*At least Larry Coker wins the recruiting war with the 0-7 Golden Panthers. Expect true freshman RB Jevarris James to eclipse over 200 yards on the ground for the 'Canes.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE: 2-4 last week, 45-14 overall in this league.

Iowa State - 24
OKLAHOMA - 35

*The Sooners defense is very suspect. Aside from their Middle Tennessee State field day, the best performance from OU's "D" is 17 points to UAB. UAB? Washington scored 20, Oregon 34 and Texas 28. I guess that explains why the top four recruits in Bob Stoops current class of 2007 are on that side of the ball.

Baylor - 9
TEXAS - 45

*If I'm true freshman Jevan Snead, I'm thinking "transfer." Colt McCoy won over fans of the Burnt Orange with a fantastic game against rival OU. Baylor is thankful they beat Colorado last week, because the Bears know what's comin' to them in Austin.

MISSOURI - 38
Texas A&M - 17

*WOW! Not even close? You heard it here first. The Aggies are the most overrated 5-1 team in college football. Sure they burned me last week on the road against Kansas State, but the Tigers have evolved into the best team in the Big 12 North. QB Chase Daniel explodes with 3 touchdowns in the air and one more on the ground. Gary Pinkel becomes a candidate for National Coach of the Year after this road victory.

NEBRASKA - 24
Kansas State - 6

*The Wildcats scored a combined NINE points against Louisville and Baylor. This Nebraska defense is better than both of those units and will shut down Ron Prince's offense. Nice tune-up game for Bill Callahan as he gets his troops ready for a visit from the Longhorns.

TEXAS TECH - 28
Colorado - 17

*How did you lose last week Dan Hawkins? That was your game! Still, the Buffs are 0-6 and about to be 0-7 after they are disposed of by a Texas Tech offense that is bitter they were "shown up" by a better offense last week.

OKLAHOMA ST. - 21
Kansas - 20

*The Cowboys burned me when they lost to Kansas State, this week it's a different story. All three of the Jayhawks losses are games they "should" have won. Toledo beat them by six, Nebraska 7 and Texas A&M scored 14 points in the 4th quarter to pull off the comeback win. Same story in Lawrence this week...sorry Mark Mangino.

BIG EAST CONFERENCE: 5-0 last week, 32-8 overall in this league.

Rutgers - 27
NAVY - 28

*UPSET SPECIAL #6

*The Midshipmen are on a roll after losing a game to Tulsa on a missed PAT three weeks ago. Head coach Paul Johnson has a system that is impossible to stop at the moment. Rutgers RB Ray Rice has another big day but QB Mike Teel makes a mistake in the 4th quarter that leads to the go ahead score for a Navy team that is ready to end one of college football's longest winning streaks next week. Get ready Notre Dame!

Cincinnati - 17
LOUISVILLE - 30

*It won't be pretty, but QB Hunter Cantwell gets it done. The Cardinals are up 30-7 in the 4th quarter when the defensive starters are pulled. Even though he wants to play now, the Cards may have to play just one more week without Brian Brohm before he comes back for one of the biggest games in Louisville football history...a date with West Virginia.

Army - 18
UCONN - 20

*The Huskies ground game was shut down last week by USF but don't expect the Black Knights to have the same success. Terry Caulley rushes for 125 yards and two touchdowns in a win that evens UConn's record at 3-3.

Pittsburgh - 27
UCF - 31

UPSET SPECIAL #7

*Gotta love what QB Tyler Palko is doing in his senior season for Pitt. Here's the problem, the Golden Knights are finally off the snide after getting a huge road win last week. George O'Leary believes in his team and this win will prove UCF is one of the best 2-3 teams out there. Pitt better bounce back next week, the Panthers have a date with Rutgers.

Syracuse - 14
W. VIRGINIA - 42

*Pat White throws the ball 9 times...that's it. The Orange haven't seen a rushing attack like this since they had one with Jim Brown decades ago.

USF - 31
N. Carolina - 23

*Matt Grothe had another amazing performance against UConn. He threw just three incomplete passes and had a total of FOUR TOUCHDOWNS! This redshirt freshman is the future face of the Big East Conference and he goes on the road and wins one on Tobacco Road.

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: 4-1 last week, 26-14 overall in this league.

New Mexico - 21
UNLV - 24

UPSET SPECIAL #8

*This game will be on CSTV and the Rebels will be ready to put on a great show! QB Rocky Hinds has a strong game and the Rebels ground game is finally productive as Mike Sanford wins the biggest game of his coaching tenure in Vegas.

UTAH - 34
Wyoming - 14

*There is NO WAY the Utes lose this game after the emotional upset win at home over TCU. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are a huge disappointment. Safety Eric Weddle picks off two more passes in this easy road win.

Colorado St. - 23
AIR FORCE - 28

UPSET SPECIAL #9

*The Falcons schedule isn't easy. Opening the season in Knoxville, then two more road games to finally open up at home against NAVY! I still think Fisher DeBerry has a strong team and they'll give their fans in Colorado Springs something to root for! Tough loss for CSU, a team having a solid season so far.

CONFERENCE USA: 5-2 last week, 37-16 overall in this league.

Arkansas St. - 7
MEMPHIS - 17

*When you're held to 79 yards passing against Tennessee, it'd be easy to get down on yourself. Instead, Memphis QB Martin Hankins responded with an excellent 22-30 for 303 yards, 3 TD and just 1 pick against UAB. The Tigers may have to devote more plays to the passing game with Joseph Doss having problems replacing the legendary DeAngelo Williams.

Tulsa - 20
E. CAROLINA - 27

*UPSET SPECIAL #10

*Nice win on CSTV last week for Skip Holtz. Now his Pirates are officially ROLLING with a victory over a quality team like Tulsa. The ECU ground game is the Pirates ticket to winning football. Against Virginia they gobbled up over 200 yards rushing. Expect another 200 yard performance from ECU's host of backs.

UAB - 35
Rice - 27

*The Blazers are quietly in the drivers seat of the CUSA Eastern Division. With this road win (which will be aired on CSTV) UAB improves to 3-0 in league play. As for the Rice Owls, they're two years away from making a dent.

HOUSTON - 37
So. Miss. - 24

*The losing streak ends for the Cougars! How in the world does your quarterback throw for 367 yards with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions - and you lose!? Here's how: Kolb was sacked 7 times, the Cougars had over 70 yards in penalties and only 17 thousand fans showed up to watch the game at Robertson Stadium!!! Come on Cougar fans! You loved 'em when they were undefeated, then they lose BY ONE to Miami and you don't care? Kevin Kolb gets more time to throw against Southern Miss and the Cougars improve to 5-2.

MARSHALL - 24
SMU - 16

UPSET SPECIAL #11

*According to records, this is an upset. Marshall is just 1-4, while SMU is 3-3. According to talent, this game is picked correctly. I do like redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Willis, but he's suspended indefinitely for punching a male SMU student that was reportedly "stalking him." Without Willis, the Mustangs lose at home.

Tulane - 21
UTEP - 37

*Why are the Miners struggling? They barely beat SMU, New Mexico State and San Diego State. Those three teams are a combined 5-11. QB Jordan Palmer isn't making anyone think he plays like his brother. He has his moments, his completion percentage is awesome, but mostly Jordan is unable to make the big play. He does this week against Tulane and Mike Price watches his record improve to 4-2.

Pittsburgh - 27
UCF - 31

*Gotta love what QB Tyler Palko is doing in his senior season for Pitt. Here's the problem, the Golden Knights are finally off the snide after getting a huge road win last week. George O'Leary believes in his team and this win will prove UCF is one of the best 2-3 teams out there. Pitt better bounce back next week, the Panthers have a date with Rutgers.

WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: 2-2 last week, 31-10 overall in this league.

Idaho - 21
LA. TECH - 30

UPSET SPECIAL #12

*The Vandals show up 3-3, while the Bulldogs are 1-4. That's the only reason I'm calling this an "upset special." The Bulldogs have the most brutal schedule of any team in the WAC. Nebraska, Texas A&M and Clemson in their non-conference?! Throw in a blow-out loss to Boise State and Louisiana Tech is battle-tested. The two game winning streak ends for Idaho head coach Dennis Erickson...who's doing a fantastic job by the way.

HAWAII - 44
Fresno St. - 27

*What happened to Fresno State? The Bulldogs will be 1-5 and are losing to teams like UTAH STATE!!! Head coach Pat Hill is sitting on a hot seat that is sure to warm up even more after this blow-out loss at home to the Warriors.

Utah State - 14
SAN JOSE ST. - 26

*I know the Aggies beat Fresno State on the road, but that win isn't as cool as it used to be. The Spartans have had a two weeks to study "what should be" an 0-6 team. Dick Tomey's team wins at home and are just two wins away from qualifying for a bowl game. San Jose State hasn't been bowling since 1990.

BOISE STATE - 45
New Mexico St. - 24

*Ian Johnson is a little miffed he was pulled so early last week against Louisiana Tech. On only 14 carries, Johnson rushed for 92 yards and one touchdown. As a team, the Broncos steamrolled the Bulldogs for 265 yards on the ground. Ian wanted 200 of those. Against New Mexico State, he gets back to his old 200 yard days. Another easy win for the BCS bound Broncos.

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE: 6-1 last week, 36-17 overall in this league.

MIAMI (OH) - 35
Buffalo - 20

*The Redhawks are finally in the win column. Rough season in Athens, as the Hawks came so close to beating Northern Illinois last week. I went with the Bulls last week at home against Ball State and they burned me. I learned my lesson.

OHIO - 27
Illinois - 23

*The Bobcats are down 13 going into the 4th quarter and the Illini remind us AGAIN how bad they are. How in the world is John L. Smith keeping his job at Michigan State after losing at home to these guys?

TOLEDO - 31
Kent State - 28

*UPSET SPECIAL #13

*I've made a habit of picking against the Golden Flashes this season. Sure they've won 4 in a row, but who has Kent State defeated? Miami (OH), Bowling Green, Akron and Temple!!! I'll give them the Akron win, the Zips beat N.C. State, but the other three are a combined 3-15. The Rockets have a future star in true freshman Aaron Opelt and he leads them to victory on the road.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS - 28
Western Michigan - 27

*What a finish! Garrett Wolfe rushes for 260 yards and three touchdowns in this conference thriller! The Broncos have the Huskies in the palm of their hoof, but a late turnover gives the Wolfe-man another chance to prove he's college football's MVP.

Ball State - 27
C. MICHIGAN - 49

*The Cardinals simply can't hang with the Chippewas. With redshirt freshman quarterback Dan LeFevour calling the shots, CMU will rival Northern Illinois as the Western Division's best team. Up next for the Chippewas - Bowling Green and Temple. CMU will be 6-3 heading into their rival game with Western Michigan.

Eastern Michigan - 24
BOWLING GREEN - 38

*I've been hard on the Falcons this season, this I know. But losing at home to an 0-5 team? Get ready for Central Michigan BGU, I'll be back to my old ways next week.

SUN-BELT CONFERENCE: 2-2 last week, 28-9 overall in this league.

FIU - 13
MIAMI - 41

*At least Larry Coker wins the recruiting war with the 0-7 Golden Panthers. Expect true freshman RB Jevarris James to eclipse over 200 yards on the ground for the 'Canes.

La. Monroe - 14
TROY - 19

*Finally, the Trojans are back home after a month on the road against teams like Florida State, Georgia Tech, Nebraska and UAB. Brutal. But...in the long-run those teams will make Troy so much better than most in this conference. The Trojan ground game needs to do more than 58 yards on 32 carries.

Southern Utah - 13
FLORIDA ATLANTIC - 30

*The FAU Owls are on a roll! They won a game! Thank goodness for 1AA opponents, without them who would the Sun Belters pick on?

INDEPENDENTS: 4-0 last week, 19-5 overall in this league.

Rutgers - 27
NAVY - 28

*The Midshipmen are on a roll after losing a game to Tulsa on a missed PAT three weeks ago. Head coach Paul Johnson has a system that is impossible to stop at the moment. Rutgers RB Ray Rice has another big day but QB Mike Teel makes a mistake in the 4th quarter that leads to the go ahead score for a Navy team that is ready to end one of college football's longest winning streaks next week. Get ready Notre Dame!

Army - 18
UCONN - 20

*The Huskies ground game was shut down last week by USF but don't expect the Black Knights to have the same success. Terry Caulley rushes for 125 yards and two touchdowns in a win that evens UConn's record at 3-3.

Temple - 3
CLEMSON - 72

*Please Tommy Bowden, don't hurt the Owls too bad.

NAIA GAME OF THE WEEK: 0-1 last week, 2-4 overall picking my alma mater.

LINDENWOOD - 21
C. Methodist - 18

*The Lions proved me wrong again last week smashing Evangel 41-10! The CMU Eagles are 2-4 and the Lions are 3-4. The Eagles will be celebrating homecoming...but this is the NAIA, about 14 alums will be back for this classic.
