Garbage Time Comes Early
NEW YORK - It's garbage time at the Garden, and no, that doesn't mean the Knicks are back in town. The magic for Gardner-Webb appears to have run its course as UConn continues to shuttle fresh bodies in and mainatins a double-digit lead at the under-12:00 media timeout, 66-45.
Joining AJ Price in double-figure scoring for UConn are Stanley Robinson and Doug "Dougie" Wiggins. (Calhoun loves the Dougie moniker for his sophomore and is sure to drop a few dozen "Dougies" in his post-game presser.
Flittner has 13 for G-W and teammate Thomas Sanders has 11.
. . . These two teams meet again in Hartford on Tuesday night in a game scheduled during the off-season. G-W will play in the consolation game tomorrow night, then at Radford (VA) on Saturday. UConn is off until Tuesday following tomorrow night's championship game at 9:30.
. . . It's no secret that Gardner-Webb has gotten the most "bang for their buck" as head coach Rick Scruggs said earlier this week when asked about the publicity G-W has received after its upset win over Kentucky. But the school was able to quaintify some of the exposure in its game notes. By last Friday afternoon, 463 individual stories had been written on the school, worldwide (Google News search); coach and players appeared on a total of 19 national and international (Australia) radio shows; and papers from the New York Times to the LA Times to USA Today had all written about the school located just 12 miles above the North Carolina-South Carolina border town of Gaffney, S.C.
