Pitino: "BYU A Better Basketball Team"

LAS VEGAS -- Facing a high-octane BYU team without key players David Padgett and Juan Palacios, Louisville coach Rick Pitino was honest in his assessment of the Cougars' 78-76 win tonight in Las Vegas.

"We're a depleted team," Pitino said. "We were looking forward [to facing North Carolina], too. But Brigham Young is a better basketball team."

Now, unless Old Dominion pulls of the upset in the night cap, BYU will face the Tar Heels on Saturday.

The Cougars certainly were the better team tonight as they overcame allowing Louisville to shoot 70 percent in the first half to improve their record to 5-0. Jonathan Tavernari exploded for 29 points, seven rebounds and one highlight-reel assist behind his back that led to a two-handed power slam from Trent Plaisted.

Plaisted had a great night of his own with 21 points and 12 rebounds on 10-of-16 shooting. Despite the top scoring performances, the Cougars wouldn't have been in the game in the first half if it wasn't for their aggressive defense. While the Cardinals hit most of their shots, they didn't get many opportunities as the Cougars racked up 13 more first-half attempts and forced 13 turnovers.

"I wanted to make sure that when they did miss a shot, that was it and they didn't get another opportunity," said BYU coach Dave Rose.

And while Louisville did its best to make up for the personnel losses, it was clear they were missing Padgett and Palacios. Derrick Caracter, starting for Padgett, had a great stat line. He shot 10-of-12 from the field and tallied 24 points and 11 rebounds. But he picked up four fouls, all of which Pitino called bad fouls, and showed his inexperience at times.

"Derrick did a lot of good things and a lot of big things, but he didn't do all the little things," Pitino said.

And it's the little things that really count in a 78-76 ball game. For Louisville they've got to figure out how to adjust to life without Padgett, who is likely out for the season. It's a good thing it's only November. They have plenty of time. BYU meanwhile looks like a team ready to make a run for a Mountain West championship.
