A10: Xavier Advances To Semis

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Keyed by threes from Stanley Burrell and Josh Duncan, Xavier used a quick 14-4 run midway through the second half to erase a 2-point Dayton lead. The Flyers never really threatened after that, and Xavier advanced to the Atlantic 10 semifinals with a 74-65 victory.

The Flyers' Marcus Johnson, who scored 26 points, hit a three from the corner with 1:12 left that cut the lead to 7, but Dayton only cut the lead a point by the 30-second mark. Xavier hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to ice it.

X put 5 players in double figures: Josh Duncan with 16, C.J. Anderson 15, Stanley Burrell 13, Drew Lavender 12 and Derrick Brown 11. More stats and such to follow.

A10: Xavier Run Gives Musketeers Edge

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Want to know one of the reasons why Xavier didn't get any players on the first team All-Atlantic 10? The current lineup on the court: Josh Duncan has 16, Derrick Brown 9, C.J. Anderson 10, Drew Lavender 9 and Stanley Burrell 10.

After Dayton grabbed a two-point lead, Xavier has been on a 14-4 run to take a 58-52 lead with just over six minutes left. Burrell's three-pointer with just under 11 minutes left was part of a 12-0 run for Xavier to give the Musketeers a 51-46 lead. Dayton had grabbed its first edge of the second half on a long Brian Roberts 2 about seven minutes in.

Meanwhile, all five Dayton players at one point had three fouls. Xavier's B.J. Raymond and Anderson have four fouls each. Dayton's London Warren landed hard on his tailbone on play he was called for a charge on Duncan earlier this half and hasn't returned. Marcus Johnson now has 19 points for the Flyers.

Wireless continues to get worse at courtside. I'll steal somebody else's seat closer to the routers or blog from the press room if I have to for the next game.

A10: Xavier Up A Half Dozen

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Xavier hasn't really looked back since erasing an early six-point deficit and leads by 6 at halftime over Dayton, 35-29. X led by as many as 12 before a short run by the Flyers cut it to the halftime deficit.

Everything was going right for Xavier at certain points of the first half. The Musketeers -- whose mascot finally showed up, thankfully -- had one sequence where Derrick Brown stole the ball, tossed it to a teammate while falling out of bounds, then got the ball immediately back and was fouled on a fast-break layup.

Marcus Johnson has 10 (but 2 fouls) for the Flyers, while Brian Roberts has 8. Jimmy Binnie also has 3 fouls for Dayton, picking up his third on a charge with just over a minute left in the half. Drew Lavender has 9 for the Musketeers. Derrick Brown and Stanley Burrell have 5 each.

Meanwhile, the wireless internet here at Boardwalk Hall continues to be worse than any of the basketball played so far.

A10: Xavier Thunders Ahead

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Derrick Brown stole the ball and threw down a thunderous dunk to complete a 10-0 run to put Xavier up 8. It's now 25-19 with 7:30 left in the first half.

Dayton called timeout after being outscored 21-7 after being up 10-4 to open the game. Xavier has already drawn 8 fouls.

Brian Roberts has 6 for Dayton, while X's Josh Duncan has 8 and Drew Lavender has 6.

A10: Dayton Out To Early Lead

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Jimmy Binnie has a three-pointer and Dayton is out to an early 10-4 lead at the first media timeout.

Dayton's Jimmy London has the play of the game so far, stripping Xavier's Stanley Burrell in the backcourt and driving in for a tough layup over him about three minutes in.

A10: Xavier-Dayton About To Tip

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- It's a couple minutes 'til tip-off, which means it's a good time to "arrange a meeting place in case of an emergency, at least according to the PA announcer here at Boardwalk Hall. It's also a good time to look at the comments Xavier's Stanley Burrell made earlier this week. (You'll notice that a JPEG of that writer's Fathead is on the side of that blog.) No members of the Musketeers made the All-Atlantic 10 first team, and Burrell -- the A10's Defensive Player of the Year -- was visibly angry.

"It's ridiculous. This league is pathetic," Burrell said. "We went 14-2, top 10 in the nation. Forget first team, Josh is probably the player of the year. You've got the best team and nobody on the first-team all-conference team? It's ridiculous. You talk about not having motivation? We got plenty now. I'm really looking forward to Atlantic City now."

Dayton has a bit more fans here than Xavier, but both teams have decent-sized groups of supporters here in A.C. Dayton has its incredibly creepy mascot, while Xavier counters with a band with full drum set.

A10: Day Two

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Now this was the Atlantic 10 tournament everybody expected. The league's members beat each other up all season; yesterday, games were decided by 1, 2 and 3 points. Despite the close games, all the top seeds managed to hold on, although eighth-seeded Dayton needed OT to do it. Basketball Prospectus predicted a wide-open tournament, and even the teams who survived yesterday are certainly dangerous in quarterfinal matchups today.

Here's what's coming from down the shore at Boardwalk Hall this afternoon.

Xavier-Dayton Wrap-Up

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Stanley Burrell has always been able to score. But now he can do so much more. The Xavier guard used his role as a budding defensive stopper to shut down Dayton star Brian Roberts as Xavier dominated Dayton, 69-43, in front of a sellout crowd at Cintas Center.

Roberts scored just five points, and he was only able to get off five shots in the game. Burrell deflected credit for his defensive performance.

"I was really proud of my guys," he said. "They did a great job. I just wanted to do a great job of speeding him up and just frustrating him the whole night."

Xavier head coach Sean Miller agreed with Burrell. He said the Musketeers used a "complete team effort" to shut down Roberts and the Flyers. The 43 points were Dayton's fewest in a game this season. The Flyers' previous low was 55 in a win over Holy Cross.

In addition to his solid defense, Burrell led a balanced Xavier scoring attack with 13 points on five-of-11 shooting. Josh Duncan scored 12 points, and B.J. Raymond added 11 for the Musketeers. Xavier also got a key contribution from reserve freshman guard Dante Jackson, who scored six points and picked four steals in 17 minutes of play.

"Guys like Dante usually hit their stride around Christmas, and I think he did that," Miller said. "Dante Jackson played his best game at Xavier today."

The most important stat of the night was 3-point shooting percentage. Xavier made 11-of-22 long-range shots while Dayton made only two of 18 tries from beyond the arc. The victory was Xavier's twenty-third consecutive win over Dayton in Cincinnati. The two schools meet in Dayton on Feb. 24. Dayton next travels to Richmond Saturday while Xavier heads to UMass on Sunday at noon.

The Lead Is Safe, Sean

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- You've got to figure Sean Miller will get Xavier's key players out of the game soon. No reason to risk injury or extra fatigue for Drew Lavender, Stanley Burrell and Co. tonight. Xavier has extended its lead to 30 points -- yes, 30! -- at 63-33 with 6:09 to play.

Will Dayton Get 40?

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Dayton's lowest point total this season is 55 in a win at Holy Cross. It seems fairly certain that Xavier will hold the Flyers under that number, barring a late barrage from Brian Roberts and Co. after Sean Miller puts in the reserves. Xavier leads, 57-32, with just under eight minutes to play.

I wonder how long Miller will leave his key players in the game. I'm sure a bit of extra rest wouldn't hurt the Musketeers as they must come from the emotional high off this performance and head to Amhert, Mass., for a Sunday afternoon affair with Travis Ford's formidable UMass team. The Minutemen won at Dayton - no easy task - last weekend.

Xavier By 25

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- It's becoming apparent that this is just Xavier's night. The Musketeers keep draining three-pointers and Dayton continues to sputter on offense. Xavier leads 53-28 with 11:44 to play.

Perhaps this performance will assuage some of the fears expressed by a national writer for ESPN.com after Xavier's harder-than-expected win at George Washington over the weekend.

And The Lead Grows

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Xavier continues to pull away from over-matched Dayton here at Cintas Center. Every time Dayton makes a shot, the Musketeers seem to have an answer. After Dayton star Brian Roberts hit his first three of the game, Xavier's Josh Duncan responded by drilling one of his own from the top of the key. Xavier has its largest lead of the game at 47-25 and, with only 14:40 left, Dayton is running out of time to get back into the game.

This game reminds me of the Dayton-Pitt game last month. The home team keeps making shots and, while you wait for the visitors to make a run, it just doesn't seem as though it's going to happen.

Xavier Leads Comfortably At Halftime

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- With a comfortable 16-point lead at halftime, Xavier looks to be well on its way to a 23rd straight win in Cincinnati against Dayton. The Musketeers have played well at home, and Dayton is banged up, but I don't think anyone expected Xavier to dominate play to the degree that it did in the first half.

Xavier coach Sean Miller has to be pleased with his team's defensive performance. The Musketeers are playing hard on the defensive end, especially against Brian Roberts. Xavier has effectively taken Roberts out of the game while leaving open other Dayton shooters, but those players haven't been able to knock down their open looks. The Flyers never made any kind of dent in the Xavier lead. Things instead went the other way, as Xavier methodically extended its lead.

Brian Roberts Has Two Points

CINCINNATI, Ohio - ...and Xavier has a 14-point lead with 3:40 to play in the first half.

Coincidence? I think not.

Despite Stanley Burrell, Jason Love and Drew Lavender all seeing limited action with two fouls, Dayton has not been able to cut into the Musketeers lead. That's in large part because Dayton's All-America candidate hasn't been able to get going. He just missed a short runner in the middle of the lane and shook his head in frustration. We'll see if UD can get the lead down to single digits by halftime.

Remember 8:47

CINCINNATI, Ohio - ... that's when Xavier guard Stanley Burrell, who had been smothering Dayton's Brian Roberts, picked up his second foul and left the game. Xavier led 21-8 at the time. Roberts made his first shot of the game on the ensuing Flyers' possession. Love and Burrell are both on the bench with two fouls for Xavier.

Derrick Brown Can Elevate

CINCINNATI, Ohio - ...and Xavier has taken a 21-8 lead. Dayton remains cold from the outside and Brown just soared for a thunderous dunk, igniting this crowd and forcing Dayton's Brian Gregory to take a timeout.

Xavier Leads Dayton, 15-6

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Musketeers are playing lockdown defense on Dayton, especially Flyers' guard Brian Roberts. He hasn't been able to get so much as a sniff at an open look, and it's showing up on the scoreboard. The Flyers have just six points after eight minutes of play.

Xavier leads by nine, but it has come up empty on multiple possessions in a row. With the type of defense the Musketeers are playing, they could have an even bigger lead right now. They'll need all the lead they can get when the inevitable happens and Roberts heats up.

Xavier Leads Early, Love In Foul Trouble

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Xavier leads, 10-4, in the opening minutes of the rivalry battle with Dayton. Xavier's Josh Duncan nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to give Xavier the six-point margin.

Xavier center Jason Love picked up two fouls in the first three minutes of the game. That means he's probably finished for the first half. Forget what I wrote about his importance in the Xavier game plan!

Xavier-Dayton Preview

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The capacity crowd has filled up Xavier University's sparkling Cintas Center and everyone is all set for perhaps the biggest game in the history of the long Xavier-Dayton rivalry. This is just the second time that both schools have been ranked at the time when playing each other. Given the high profile of both teams -- as well as the Atlantic 10 Conference -- this season, this match-up has received a significant amount of local, regional and national attention.

Dayton has used its depth to upset Louisville and Pitt this season, but the Flyers are banged up - two key players are out with injuries. Look for Xavier to try to exploit the Flyers lack of healthy bodies in the post. Jason Love, the Musketeers' emerging big man, figures to get plenty of touches early in the game. Xavier will use a number of different defensive strategies to try to contain star Dayton guard Brian Roberts. Roberts has shown an ability to take over a game, and he'll need to do that tonight if the Flyers have a chance at snapping streak of 22 straight losses against Xavier in Cincinnati.

The game's on CSTV national television, but keep it here as well for updates at the commercial breaks and at halftime. We'll have a belated post-game wrap-up, but the parking situation here at Cintas Center is mangled, to put it nicely.

Dayton Fans Enjoy Post-Game Radio Show

DAYTON, Ohio -- Interesting little tradition here at Dayton as several hundred fans have hung around to listen to Dayton head coach Brian Gregory's post game radio show held on the UD Arena court and broadcast on the PA system in the arena. This apparently has been going on for quite sometime here at Dayton. Obviously Gregory is given a large ovation as he approaches the table for his radio show after the nine-point victory.

Dayton Tops Rhode Island, 92-83

DAYTON, Ohio -- Brian Roberts went 6-for-6 from the line down the stretch to put the game away for Dayton as they hand No. 22 Rhode Island its second loss of the season, 92-83.

The Flyers move to 13-1 overall and 10-0 at home in UD Arena.

Roberts led the way for Dayton with 23 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. He also dished out a game-high seven assists.

Marcus Johnson chipped in 14 points and five rebounds for Dayton. Amdres Sandoval added 12 points and shot 80 percent in the game.

Jimmy Baron led the Rams offensive attack with 26 points while teammate Will Daniels added 25 points on 11-for-16 shooting to go with six rebounds.

For the game, the Flyers shot 62 percent from the floor and 52.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Flyers also held a 20-12 assist advantage.

Dayton Ices Game

DAYTON, Ohio -- Dayton's Marcus Johnson was fouled but only made one of two free throws. As Rhode Island's' Parfait Bitee dribbled up the court, London Warren stole the ball and passed the ball up to Brian Roberts, who was fouled.

Roberts hit both free throws to ice the game for the Flyers with 31 seconds remaining.

Big Three For Baron

DAYTON, Ohio -- Jimmy Baron has hit a three to put Rhode Island down four, 85-81, with 43.2 seconds left, and Dayton has just called a timeout.

Dayton Leads With One Minute Left

DAYTON, Ohio -- Dayton's London Warren jumped on a loose ball and called timeout with one minute left and the Flyers are leading, 82-78. Dayton is in the double bonus and Rhode Island is in the bonus as well.

Out of the timeout, Marcus Johnson hit a three in the left corner, putting Dayton up, 85-78, with 58.3 seconds left and forcing the Rams to take a timeout.

Roberts Connects For Three

DAYTON, Ohio -- Brian Roberts just hit a big three from the left wing to put Dayton back up nine, 82-73, with 2:21 left and forced Rhode Island to take a timeout. Roberts has 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Rams Down Six

DAYTON, Ohio -- Will Daniels of Rhode Island with a spinning layup on the block puts the Rams down six with 2:52 remaining. Daniels is the Rams second-leading scorer on the night with 20 but also has four fouls.

Hustle From Both Teams

DAYTON, Ohio -- Both teams are playing their hearts out. A loose ball sent seven of the 10 players to the ground until Lamont Warren of Dayton came away with the ball and ran down the court, where he was fouled on the shot attempt and hit one of two free throws.

It's Dayton up, 74-70, with six minutes remaining.

Dayton Comes Alive

DAYTON, Ohio -- Dayton's Andres Sandoval hit a three from win-a-million-dollar-range, which brought this capacity crowd to its feet.

It's Dayton leading, 71-65, with nine minutes remaining in the second half.

Rhody On The Comeback

DAYTON, Ohio -- Will Daniels of Rhode Island just stole an outlet pass and was fouled on the layup, which he made along with the free throw.

Parfait Bitee followed that up with a three from the left wing to get the Rams within six points, and it's forced Dayton to take a timeout with the score at 64-58 with 12:06 remaining.

Second-Half Struggles For Both Teams

DAYTON, Ohio -- Both Dayton and Rhode Island have slowed down their shooting paces to open the second half. The Flyers have made 3-of-9 field goal attempts while the Rams have hit 3-of-7, with two of them being from three (one from Jimmy Baron and one from Will Daniels).

Right now it's Dayton leading, 61-49, UD, with 15 minutes left.

Flyers Flying Away With Halftime Lead

DAYTON, Ohio -- Brian Roberts hit a shot from the free throw line with about two seconds left on the clock to give Dayton a 54-41 lead at halftime. Brian Roberts has 11 points and five assists for the Flyers. Jimmy Baron has 12 points for the Rams. Dayton owns a 16-12 advantage on the boards and 14-5 lead in assists.

Little Throws Down Alley-Oop For Flyers

DAYTON, Ohio -- Andres Sandoval just stole the ball and found Charles Little for a no-look alley-oop.

Dayton is leading, 52-41, with 40.6 seconds left.

Hot Shooting From Both Sides

DAYTON, Ohio -- With 2:31 left in the first half, Dayton has expanded the lead to nine points at 47-36. Both teams are shooting at a rather high percentage with the Flyers hitting 70 percent of their field goals and the Rams knocking down 50 percent of their shots.

Marcus Johnson leads Dayton with 10 points and Jimmy Baron has 10 for the Rams as well. Speaking of Baron, he's just checked back into the game from the scorer's table.

Dayton Leading Early

Dayton, Ohio -- With 12:30 left in the first half, the Flyers own a 23-16 lead, anchored by Brian Roberts' nine points. The Rams have committed two straight turnovers, one on a charge and the other coming on a bad pass.

Flyers, Rams Battle In A-10 Opener

Dayton, Ohio -- Welcome to UD Arena, where tonight No. 17 Dayton Flyers and No. 22 Rhode Island square off in an early conference season matchup of two of the top Atlantic 10 teams.

Dayton comes in with a record of 12-1 overall and a perfect 9-0 home record. The visiting Rams sport a 14-1 overall record, the school's best-ever non-conference record.

The Flyers are led by senior guard Brian Roberts and his 19 points per game while the Rams are paced by senior forward Will Daniels' 18-point average.

UD Arena has been packed for quite some time leading up to this important early conference game, so let's get ready for the action to unfold.

December 29, 2007

Roberts Emerges In Dayton's Big Win

DAYTON, Ohio - If you could ever attribute a 25-point blowout victory to the performance of one player, you could credit Dayton senior guard Brian Roberts for UD's 80-55 win over No. 6 Pitt at UD Arena. Pitt held Roberts in check for the first 12 minutes of the game, but had no answers for the Dayton standout in the final 28 minutes.

Roberts, who scored just four points in the first 12minutes, finished with a game-high 31 points on 10-for-17 shooting, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range.

"Brian Roberts was phenomenal," Dayton coach Brian Gregory said. "I don't even know if that's a good enough word. He controlled the game from the start to the end. I've been saying for a long time that he's the most efficient guard in the country. He's getting to be one of the best guards in the country overall, too."

Roberts knew that he would have to carry his team if it was going to pull the upset over the previously undefeated Panthers.

"I just knew I had to come out and be aggressive," he said. "That's one key. I had to do that tonight."
Dayton guard Marcus Johnson, who finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, said Roberts feeds off playing on a big stage against a favored opponent.

"He's our stopper. I think he lives up to all that," Johnson said. "He likes to play in the game being the underdog."
Gregory said his program must build off a win of this magnitude as it approaches Atlantic 10 Conference play.
"You know, it's been bonkers around here for over a week," Gregory said. "This is just another block in what we're trying to build. It's a good block, a big block, but it's just one. We need to continue to do that.

"We have a vision of what we what to do and what we want to become, but you have to built that. We have to build the foundation first, and I think you're seeing us start to do that."

Dayton Hands Pitt First Loss

DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton, behind 31 points from Brian Roberts, has upset No. 6 Pittsburgh, 80-55, here at UD Arena. It's the highest-ranked opponent the Flyers have beaten here since a win over No. 3 DePaul in 1984. More after the press conferences.

Dayton Cruising

DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton coach Brian Gregory couldn't have imagined it would be this easy to pick up the program's biggest non-conference win since 1984. But it has been. The Flyers led by 12 at halftime, and Pitt never got the game into single digits in the second half. Brian Roberts has keyed a steady, consistent extension of the lead throughout this second half. With 3:48 to play, Dayton leads 80-51. And that score is not misleading. This is no closer-than-it-looks deal. Dayton has been every bit of 30 points better than punchless Pitt tonight.

The Rout Is On

DAYTON, Ohio - You get the feeling that there will be no late run by Pitt as Dayton continues to control the game and Pitt continues its futile attempts at stopping Brian Roberts. The Dayton senior guard just hit another three - his fourth of the game - to give the Flyers a 20-point cushion. It's 66-46 Dayton with 7:51 to play.

Injury update: Levance Fields has an injured ankle and will not return to the game. The severity of the injury is unknown, but Fields is definitely out for the rest of this out. So, too, seem to be the Panthers.

It's Getting Away, Coach Dixon

DAYTON, Ohio - Jamie Dixon just used his fourth time-out of the game, and with good reason, as it appears Pittsburgh's undefeated season is slipping away. Dayton has stretched its lead to a game-high 17 and has all the momentum, and Pitt is without Levance Fields, who left the game two minutes ago with an apparent ankle injury.

Fields Injured, Flyers Keep Foot On Gas

DAYTON, Ohio - If things weren't already bad enough for undefeated Pittsburgh trailing Dayton 53-40 with 15:45 to play in the game, they might have just gotten worse. Guard Levance Fields crumpled to the floor with an apparent foot injury after missing a short shot from the right side. He might have landed on another layer's foot when he came down from the shot. However it happened, Fields was carried off the floor and back to Pitt's locker room. No word his availability for the remainder of the game.

Second Half Starts With More Of Same

DAYTON, Ohio - The second half started much like the first half ended -- with Brian Roberts making a play with the ball in his hands. This time, however, it was a pass from Roberts. To be more precise, it was an alley-oop lob from Roberts that was slammed down by Marcus Johnson. Jamie Dixon has taken a time-out as Dayton has stretched its lead to 14 at 49-35 less than two minutes into the second half.

Roberts, Flyers Dominating Panthers

DAYTON, Ohio - As the final seconds of the first half ticked away and Dayton's Brian Roberts dribbled the ball up the floor, a particularly distinguishable voice could be heard above the boisterousness of the UD Arena sellout crowd.

"You know he's going to hit it," a fan yelled. "You just know it. You just know he's going to hit it."

You did know, and he did hit it. It was a fitting end to the first half for Roberts and the Flyers. After only having four points with less than eight minutes to play in the half, Roberts dominated the final part of the half. He finished the half with 19 points, including the 25-foot bomb as time expired that you knew was coming.

Dayton holds a 45-33 lead -- its biggest advantage of the game -- for a simple reason: It has the best player on the floor. Pitt must find a way to stop Roberts (here's a hint: quit going underneath screens) if it wants to leave Dayton with its undefeated record intact. It would also help the Panthers if Levance Fields would give them a bit more. He was just 2-for-7 shooting for eight points in the half. Pitt will need to heat up from beyond the arc after shooting 15 percent (2-for-13) in the first half.

Roberts Heats Up; Dayton By Five

DAYTON, Ohio - Pitt might want to start hedging screens against Dayton's Brian Roberts. The Flyers guard made back-to-back shots after the Panthers had trouble defending ball screens. Then Roberts scored on a smooth right-handed scoop shot while driving to the basket to push Dayton's lead to five. Roberts has scored Dayton's last seven points and has 11 for the game.

Timeout: Pittsburgh

DAYTON, Ohio - Jamie Dixon just took the game's first time-out after Dayton big man Kurt Huelsman backed down his defender and then scored on a rebound of his own missed shot to put Dayton ahead, 20-18. Dayton has matched Pitt shot-for-shot so far.

And there's the answer from Pitt's Sam Young, who just tied the game by scoring while getting fouled. That was the first field goal for Young, who had missed his first five shots. We're tied at 20 at the eight-minute media timeout.

Keep an eye on the star scorers from each team. Dayton's Brian Roberts has four points, and he's missed both of his three-point attempts. Pittsburgh guard Levance Fields has three points and has missed three of his four shots.

Dayton By Two

DAYTON, Ohio - At the 12:00 media time-out, Dayton leads, 13-11. Both coaches are working the officials hard, especially Pitt coach Jamie Dixon. He's been flabbergasted by multiple calls in the first eight minutes and is pressing especially hard for carrying violations against Dayton's guards. He's gotten two called already.

Dayton coach Brian Gregory just sent in four subs. We'll see if the Flyers have the depth to continue playing with the energy and pace they've shown in the first half of the first half.

Back and Forth Early

DAYTON, Ohio - Pitt leads Dayton, 7-6, in the opening minutes. The Flyers have played tight defense, but Pitt has buried two tough shots early. Keith Benjamin hit a tgree with the shot clock running out on the last possession to give Pitt the early advantage.

Dayton-Pitt Preview

DAYTON, Ohio - This basketball shrine on Edwin C. Moses Blvd. at the southern tip of Dayton has been host to hundreds of important college basketball games, especially in the NCAA Tournament. But tonight's match-up between No. 6 Pitt (11-0) and the host Dayton Flyers (10-1) is bigger than any regular season game played here in two decades.

This is the third time Dayton has won 10 of its first 11 under Brian Gregory. The Flyers started 10-1 in 2003-04, Gregory's first season, and were also 10-1 last season. Pitt enters today's game coming off of last Saturday's 65-64 victory over Duke.

Fans have been waiting for this game for a long time here, and they've only got about 20 more minutes to kill before tip-off against the highest-ranked opponent to play Dayton at UD Arena since No. 3 DePaul played here in 1984. The Flyers won that game 72-71 on a last-second shot by Ed Young. A sell-out crowd here at UD Arena wouldn't mind history repeating itself tonight.
