Phoenix Regional- Bruin Balancing act too much for Xavier

PHOENIX, AZ. -- As expected, it was the total team balance of scoring that won the game. But the odd thing is that the balance was on UCLA's side, not Xavier's. And less surprisingly, it wasn't just on offense, but on defense as well. Add both ends of the floor together and you get a 76-57 Bruin victory and a third straight trip to basketball's Land of Oz.

Phoenix Regional- Bruins go to Final Four

PHOENIX, AZ.-- UCLA wins 76-57

Phoenix Regional- Xavier's season going to end in four minutes

PHOENIX, AZ.-- The Bruins are now up 69-49 at the four minute mark. The UCLA fans are starting to get a little bit louder with every tick of the clock. They've been to the Final Four a lot, so they know when these things are about to happen. Call it a Final Four fan's 6th sense.

XUmillerYell.jpg
(Sean Miller can't find the answers to a Bruin team that's playing with a purpose today.)

Phoenix Regional- UCLA fish-head guy banished to nosebleed seats

PHOENIX, AZ.-- So I meant to write about this guy before, but this UCLA fan that's wearing one of those Finding Nemo fish heads and "Cat in the Hat" oversized gloves on his hands, was up and dancing during every time out during today's game. His seat was in the 5th row, right behind the basket.

Well a little while ago, the security here ushered him out of his "seat" and next thing you know he's up in the rafters still doing his thing up there. So this picture is from my court side seat on the opposite end zone way up to section 212 where he is now.

Bruins lead 53-39 at the 10:45 mark.

UCLAfish-head.jpg
(UCLA fish-head, no longer getting hassled by The Man)

Phoenix Regional- Bruins feelin' it, Musketeers not pressing

PHOENIX, AZ. -- It's now UCLA 48-28 after a pair of threes by Darren Collison and Kevin Love, along with a put-back by Love that had the Bruin bench jumpin' up...

BruinsFeelinIt.jpg

Just as Xavier feared, UCLA has raced out quick here in the second half, outscoring the X by a 15-4 count here in the first five minutes of the second half. And by the way, do you find it weird that Xavier hasn't employed some of the Western Kentucky philosophy and put more full court pressure on the Bruins? To my recollection, that seemed to work well on Thursday.

Phoenix Regional- "We're Xavier. We NEVER quit!"

PHOENIX, AZ.-- That was the message that the Xavier huddle had going on just before entering the arena for the last 20 minutes of today's game.

XavierHuddle.jpg
(Xavier players before going out on the court for half #2)

It's 33-24 UCLA at the mid-point break. A late run pushed the Bruin lead to nine after it had been within two or four points all half long.

Xavier needs a good push here in the second half to keep this from getting ugly. Then again, remember what Western Kentucky did? They cut a 21-point lead to fou in the second half.

Coach Sean Miller just told Derrick Brown that "we have no chance if you're not playing smart!" after Brown picked up an early foul here.

Phoenix Regional- UCLA not the same without the juggler

PHOENIX, AZ.-- Last year, among the UCLA traveling team was this quirky juggler, who always wore a bright blue suit with shiny blue high tops and a "fat guy" hat. Well apparently his scholarship ran out because he's not with the Bruins contingent this year.

UCLAjuggler.jpg
(Yes, this guy had a scholarship... meanwhile college baseball is only allowed 11.7 scholarships to split up among 35 players. WTF?!)

UCLA is now up 31-22 at the 1:35 mark of the first half. Still a great, evenly-played game for the most part. Although UCLA is going on a late half sprint here and XU needs to be careful.

Phoenix Regional- Miller has a good scheme going so far

PHOENIX, AZ.-- The pundits have been correct so far, as XU has stayed consistently with UCLA through the first 12 minutes and change of this game.

It's now UCLA by a shade, 18-15 at the 7:38 mark. Xavier's run-and-jump style of defense, where they also double off of any screens at the top of the key, seems to be making things touch for the Bruins to utilize their inside game as much as they'd like to.

XU-MillerHuddle.jpg
(Miller doing the grease board thing with his team during a time out)

Both defenses have been spot-on so far, frustrating the other teams designs and knocking a lot of loose balls around.

Phoenix Regional- I'll say this, the crowd is loud here

PHOENIX, AZ. -- I don't give a whole ton of credence to the fact that this is a "home" game for UCLA, or any team in the NCAA tournament.

But I will say this, you might not be able to tell on TV, but there is a much more palpable energy to today's game than there was on Thursday. Sure there are probably more UCLA fans here, but everybody loves an underdog, so there is a very vocal crowd pulling for Xavier too.

Of course, the energy could also be high for both teams since the game started with three electrifying dunks in the first four shots made.

Phoenix Regional- Roll not playing, but still playing a role

PHOENIX, AZ. -- Before they hit the floor today, the UCLA Bruins huddled together in the bowels of the stadium and received a short pep talk.

UCLApre-game.jpg

I heard the voice say, "C'mon guys! This is the Elite Eight. Leave it ALL on the floor today. This is what you came to UCLA for, so go out there and get it!"

They broke the huddle and I saw that the guy in the middle of it all, giving the speech was the well-suited Michael Roll. He's the Bruin sharpshooter who is redshirting this season because of an injury.

'Bout to tip off here in the Valley of the Sun.

Phoenix Regional- UCLA-Xavier fight for first Final Four berth

PHOENIX, AZ. -- Okay Xavier, just about everybody and their brother think you've got a better-than-average chance to pull this one out. I'm not going to doubt your chances either.

In the West Regional Final, it's 30-6 Xavier vs. 34-3 UCLA.

XUraymond:Miller.jpg
(Do B.J. Raymond and coach Sean Miller have any more magic left in them?)

Game time is about an hour away. Here are a couple of interesting notes going in:

- UCLA is shooting for its third straight Final Four appearance and has been in 17 Final Fours in its history. Xavier is looking for its first Final Four appearance ever.

- Eleven times an Atlantic 10 team has advanced to the Elite Eight over the years, but only one has won its way to the Final Four, that was the '96 UMass team led by Marcus Camby and coached by John Calipari.

-Three players in this game are coming off of career-best games on Thursday. Xavier's Josh Duncan scored a career-high 26 vs. West Virginia. UCLA's James Keefe came off the pine to score a career-high 18 and Frosh phenom Kevin Love scored a career-high 29 vs. Western Kentucky.

- Xavier has five players averaging double figures in scoring. Duncan leads the way with a 12.4ppg average.

- Both teams have established a school record for wins in 2008. The 2008 Musketeers with 30 and the Bruins with 34.

- Of the 21 players that average a double-double in college basketball this season, only two are freshmen, Michael Beasley of K-State and Kevin Love of UCLA (17.6 and 10.7)

- Typical of Ben Howland's philosophy, UCLA is holding opponents to 58.5ppg. This is the third straight year the Bruins have held opponents to less than 60 points.

- Big key for the Bruins: Darren Collison must get back into the swing.
He had more fouls than points against WKU (five fouls, four points) and was continually frustrated by the quick, lateral ability of the Hilltoppers guards. Guess what Xavier's biggest attribute is? Quick, lateral movement, especially of their guards Drew Lavender and Stanley Burrell.

- Big key for the Musketeers: Must continue to hitting threes like crazy.
The X went 11-19 in treys vs. West Virginia, including two by Raymond that salted the game away in overtime. UCLA was just 4-for-9 in its game with Western Kentucky, so their game doesn't rely on the shots from beyond the arc.

- Key matchup to watch: Stanley Burrell vs. Darren Collison
The 6'3" Burrell will have the assignment of covering lightning-quick Collison today. Burrell was named the A-10 defensive player of the year this season and as mentioned, Collison is coming off of one crappy performance vs. Tyrone Brazelton.

Phoenix Regional- West Virginia sees its season come crashing down

PHOENIX, AZ. -- Xavier sends WVU to the mat with 79-75 overtime win.

WVUcrash.jpg

What hurts more, this loss to Xavier today? Or the football team's loss to Pitt back in December?

Well nobody has been able to capably explain that football loss. But say this at least, tonight the Mountaineers definitely should have won. No bones about it. And it will all come down to the fact that their missed free throws were THE reason. Sure, for the game, WVU had a better free throw percentage than the Musketeers, 67% compared to 57%. But it was all about timing and pressure. WVU had neither of those factors.

Phoenix Regional- The dagger that did in West Virginia

PHOENIX, AZ. --B.J. Raymond's three-pointer with just under 20 seconds remaining proved to be the fatal blow to West Virginia's hopes of reaching the Elite Eight. Xavier wins

BJRaymondShot.jpg
(Raymond and the Musketeers celebrate his three-point shot)

Phoenix Regional- Uh-oh, WVU loses its best player

PHOENIX, AZ. -- Joe Alexander just fouled out. Is that a bad omen? WVU still leads by four here in OT

JoeAlexFoulOut.jpg
(It was a weak call Joe)

Phoenix Regional- Like the blood coming out of the elevator in The Shining

PHOENIX, AZ. -- The gullywashing red Gatorade dump right behind the West Virginia bench has turned the entire carpet red and full of ice.

WVUgatoradeDump.jpg
(No more ball in the house! It's all fun and games until somebody ruins the shag carpeting)

It's now Xavier 57-55 with 6:47. Hot damn, it looks like I'll finally be able to see a white-knuckler here in Phoenix.

Phoenix Regional- Mighty Joe waking up

PHOENIX, AZ. -- West Virginia forward Joe Alexander had a whisper quiet first half:

3 points.
3 rebounds.
2 fouls.
2 turnovers.

So far in this second half the 'Neer mountain man has already got nine of WVU's 22 points and is a lot more active on both ends of the court. He's been the difference as the Mountaineers look to make a big push in the second half.

I don't know what Huggins was saying during that last time out, but he was looking almost exclusively at Alexander and doing a lot of pointing. Not angrily, just informatively.

Right now it's still Xavier, 50-49 with 10:44 remaining.

Phoenix Regional- Two quirks about teams cheering sections

PHOENIX, AZ.-- Two things I noticed about those in these two teams' traveling circles.

No. 1:
Xavier's girl cheerleaders are taller than their male cheerleaders...
XUcheers.jpg

No. 2:
I don't know why, but it's pretty cool. WVU has a band member that is obviously older, maybe into his upper 50s, low 60s or so. And he also looks sorta like Paul Newman and uses a hearing aid...
WVUoldBandguy.jpg

It's now XU up 43-40 as West Virginia has made another push here to start the second half. I don't know what Huggins said to his team during the last time out, but most of the players came away laughing as they went to sit back down.

Phoenix Regional- WVU makes late rush before halftime

PHOENIX, AZ -- It's now XU 32-25 at the midway point.

HugginsUnraveling.jpg

But early on in the game, we saw a lot of these kind of reactions from coach Huggins as the Mountaineers built up a big 28-12 lead. But the Mountaineers have been chipping away and playing good defense to make it a game at the half.

Jarrett Brown has come off the pine to lead WVU in scoring with eight points. Josh Duncan also has eight to lead the X.

The score could be much worse if the Musketeers were able to convert some inside layups. But to WVU's credit, they've had a lot of hands in XU's grills early. For the game, XU is 11-for-27 and the WVU is just 9-for-27.

Biggest stat of the game so far? Three-point shooting.
XU: 6-for-11
WVU: 0-for-6

Phoenix Regional- OMG!! That guy that used to see Jessica Simpson naked is here

PHOENIX, AZ. -- West Virginia has been able to cut into XU's massive lead, chopping it to 28-20.

NickLashay.jpg

Maybe it's because this guy is in the crowd cheering on the Mountaineers. Although the whole time Nick Lashay has been here all he's done is check his text messages, send text messages and check out hot chicks sending text messages.

Xavier still looks like the much better team so far. And by the way, when did Mr. Bandwagon Lashay become a West Virginia fan anyway?

Phoenix Regional- XU is up 13-5 and it shows.

PHOENIX, AZ. -- The reason West Virginia didn't score its first bucket from the field until the 14:59 mark of the first half...

XUlavenderDefense.jpg

The look in Drew Lavender's eyes says a lot here as the Musketeers have been all in the jock of the Mountaineers from the opening tap here in Phoenix. As witnessed by the fact that Bob Huggins didn't even wait until the first media time out to yell at his team about its lackluster play thus far.

Phoenix Regional- Miller and Huggins ready to rumble

PHOENIX, AZ.-- We're about five minutes before game time and this arena is not even half full at the time. Not a lot of intensity/fire to the surroundings here in Phoenix. Just seemed like things were more of a "happening" in Omaha last week. Well as long as the games are more competitive here, I'll be alright with everything.

West Regional: The Day Before Preview

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- So Bruin fans... you nervous?

Did the A&M game scare the bejesus out of you? It should have. Look, you guys have been a little on the spoiled side the last few years. Getting Ben Howland. Pac 10 titles. Final Four runs. But now things aren't looking so hot, having to get a handful of fortuitous referee calls (or non-calls) to pull out nip-tuck wins over Cal, Stanford, USC and, of course, Texas A&M over the last few weeks.

UCLAhowland.jpg
(Ben should be doing less howling this weekend in Phoenix. Emphasis on "should")

Well I've got good news for you, this weekend should go a little bit easier. You've got three teams from two or three time zones away coming out West and none of them are named Duke. Or maybe I should say, none of them are named "Duke when they're playing like Duke."

This is where Coach Howland usually puts his best foot forward. And to be honest, if the defense he preaches so well keeps holding opponents to under 70 points - as they've done in 11 of the last 12 games - the offense will figure it out better and UCLA should move on.

Xavier Postgame Quotes

WASHINGTON -- Postgame quotes from Xavier follow:
Sean Miller:
I want to commend Purdue for not only a great season but its amazing what they were able to do with that many freshmen playing the roles they did. ... Two similar teams in that we take pride in our defense.

These three seniors a year ago went through a very difficult loss in this same game. Its been a motivating game for us to see if we could get back to this point....

[Points to C.J. Anderson as the difference for this year's team.]

Very very happy for Xavier University.

Xavier Wins, Will Face WVU

WASHINGTON -- Xavier made enough of their free throws down the stretch to come away with a seven-point win over Purdue. C.J. Anderson and Drew Lavender each scored 18 for the Musketeers, while Josh Duncan added 16 in the win. Walking off the court, Xavier looks to be showing an appropriate mixture of joy and confidence. There is no one play you can point to in this one and say that is why Xavier one; there isn't really a player you can say that about either (though Lavender was so steady at the point). Really, this one came down to consistency, the ability to hit a shot when it mattered, and fundamentals, whether that was rebounding, foul shooting, or what have you.

That Xavier-West Virginia matchup next weekend will be a good one.

One Minute Really Means 20

WASHINGTON -- The last minute here at Verizon Center is going to take us about 20 minutes to play, with Purdue fouling every time Xavier touches the ball and the referees doing their best to add to the confusion by reviewing just about anything they can review. Xavier just threw their inbounds out of bounds, so Purdue has the ball with 44 seconds and a five-point deficit.

Lavender Picks His Spots

WASHINGTON -- Drew Lavender has made a floater and single-handedly broken the Purdue press in the last minute, the press break leading to a dunk for Josh Duncan. Keaton Grant just drilled a three for Purdue, but the margin is still six. During the last timeout, Xavier fans started cheering "Father Graham" in honor of their university president, Michael Graham (who was not the Michael Graham on Georgetown's 1984 title team, in case you were wondering).

Kramer is Done

WASHINGTON -- Chris Kramer, Purdue's best defender and the definition of a glue guy, just fouled out. Purdue Coach Matt Painter let the referees have it, to no avail. Kramer finished with six points, three boards, and at least two steals.

After a pair of free throws by Keaton Grant, however, Purdue is within four.

Tossin Up Those Xs

WASHINGTON -- The sense I've gotten all afternoon is that both of these teams here are pretty good teams but neither has quite enough firepower to go into that next gear and put the other away. After a C.J. Anderson floater just now as the shot clock expired, Xavier got about as fired up as the Muskateers have been all day, throwing up crossed arms in the shape of an X and screaming towards the bench. Perhaps the momentum from that play can help Xavier pull away from the Boilermakers, who as pesky as they have been, simply don't seem to be able to make enough baskets to win. They've been good enough to keep it close....but have not shown they can seize the game.

Xavier by 6 with 3:25 to go.

Now That Is an Inbounds

WASHINGTON -- Drew Lavender, on an out-of-bounds play along the baseline, just threw a sweet ally-oop to Derrick Brown for the flush and the eight point lead. Xavier now leads by 10 after two free throws from Josh Duncan. As an aside, Gilbert Arenas is watching this one from the tunnel. If he had played for West Virginia earlier, he'd have scored 84 or 85, I'd guess. Gilbert is sporting some absurd looking red and white checkered capris. From the looks of it, he's trying to get someone to let him into the Wizards locker room, where I hope he'll throw on something a little more reasonable if he is going to come out here and watch the game.

Stanley Burrell's Journey

WASHINGTON -- Stanley Burrell, a 6-foot-3 senior guard from Indianapolis, spent his first two seasons at Xavier as the team's leading scorer. Now, though, Burrell has taken a back seat offensively and settled into his role as a defensive stopped and role player.

Purdue Scores First Nine

WASHINGTON -- Purdue came out with a ton of energy and scored the first nine points. Keaton Grant has five of those, including a nice transition three. Xavier, meanwhile, has been careless with the ball.

Big Finish Coming in D.C.

Washington -- Xavier, up three points and in possession of the ball, just used its final timeout with 1:24 left. Sundiata Gaines has been a force for the Dawgs, but if Xavier can hit free throws down the stretch -- and they are getting all the calls -- they should hold on.

NCAA Tournament Preview: Washington

Verizon Center has seen its fair share of memorable college basketball games the last few years. It has seen Georgetown upset No. 1 Duke in January 2006, the ultimate Cinderella, George Mason, take down mighty Connecticut later that spring, and Roy Hibbert beat those Huskies on an unexpected three pointer just a couple months ago. With the eight teams the NCAA has sent to Verizon for the first weekend of this year's tournament, there is a good chance that the District is one again the site of a few classics.

A10: Saint Joseph's 'D' Clamps Down On Xavier

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli said he knew his team was ready for Xavier, having played the Musketeers already this season and beaten them eight days earlier. He also said he "prayed a double rosary" before today's games that Xavier's threes didn't fall.

After making 23 three-pointers in the first two games between the schools, Xavier went just 1-for-14 from distance. Joe's jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never trailed in its 63-51 upset win over the 10th-ranked team in the country.

Xavier's 51 points were its lowest total all season.

A10: St. Joe's Upsets Xavier To Advance To Final

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Are the Hawks in? They certainly gave it their best effort Saint Joseph's used a 15-0 run at the end of the first half and beginning of the second and held on to beat Xavier, 61-53 tonight.

Xavier cut it to 5 with just over a minute to play, but the Hawks broke the press and Pat Calathes' emphatic dunk put them back up 7. Calathes had 24 for the Hawks in the upset.

A pair of Xavier free throws by Drew Lavender cut the Hawks' lead back to 5, but Calathes hit 3-of-4 free throws to bring the lead back to 8. Calathes missed the back end of his first set of free throws, but the Hawks got the rebound. An airballed three at the other end pretty much sealed the win.

Josh Duncan had 11 points for X, all in the second half. The Musketeers shot just 19-for-52 (36.5 percent) for the game.

At the end of the game, Joe's fans held up signs that read "BOARD HAWK HILL."

A10: Hawks Two Minutes Away From Final

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Back in Saint Joseph's win over Xavier on March 6, the Hawks were up 10 going into the final minutes to play but held on for a five-point victory.

With 3:15 to play tonight, the Hawks led by 12 and were up by 9 with 2:32 to play after a Josh Duncan layup. A Stanley Burrell steal and layup made it 54-47 with just under 2 minutes left.

Let's see if the Hawks can hold on again eight days later.

A10: Josh Duncan Getting On Track; Joe's Still Up

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Saint Joseph's has had about five three-pointers so far this game go in and out, but the Hawks still lead this one by 12, 53-41. There's 5:09 left in this one.

Xavier's Josh Duncan, who didn't score in the first half, has 7 points in the second. He's still only 1-for-6 from the floor. Ahmad Nivins has 14 for the Hawks.

Xavier has 8 fouls; St. Joe's has 9.

A10: Pat Calathes Getting Three Points All Over

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Pat Calathes had just 3 points with a little over a minute left in the first half. The Saint Joseph's senior had a three-point play and a shot from behind the arc to close the half, then opened the second half with a trifecta of three pointers.

He now has 18 and had made four straight threes until he airballed one just before the second media timeout. With 11 minutes left in this one, Saint Joseph's continues to be up by double digits, 46-32.

A10: Ferguson Picks Up Fourth Foul

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- The referees called four consecutive fouls to open the first half and the Saint Joseph's center is now on the bench just 5:36 into the first half. Xavier still trails by 10, 38-28.

Xavier began pressing after Josh Duncan hit a pair of free throws -- his first points of the game -- just three minutes into the half. Joe's broke the press both times Xavier used it; a Pat Calathes three had the Hawks up 14, 38-24, at the first media timeout at 15:48.

A10: Xavier Can't Score At Halftime, Either

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- How much did the Hawks shut down Xavier's offense in the first half? The 8-for-25 first half was one of its worst performances of the season. But things might have gotten worse at halftime.

The first round of the Atlantic 10 Shootout was held inbetween halves. The game was a mixed doubles shootaround competition where winners from each campus competed against each other in a game similar to that awful "2-ball" that used to be played during NBA All-Star Weekend. Xavier played Saint Joseph's in the first matchup and Xavier's team didn't score at all. X also had several airballs -- as did many teams! I shudder to think who these teams defeated at their campuses.

Rob Ferguson opened the first half with a three-pointer that puts the Hawks up 13; Rashid Carr's jumper just made it 35-20, Hawks. Ferguson is 6-for-6 from distance so far this tournament. The Musketeers turned it over again and now have eight.

A10: Saint Joseph's Ends Half With 10 Straight

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Saint Joseph's ended the half on a 10-0 run to break a tie and went into the locker room up 30-20 on Xavier. Pat Calathes' three-pointer just before the clock expired of the first half gave him 9 for the game. Ahmad Nivins also has 9 for the Hawks, but sat for a stretch with 2 fouls.

The Hawks have so far clamped down on Xavier's normally extremely efficient offense, holding the Musketeers to just 32 percent shooting. Josh Duncan is 0-for-4 and scoreless. C.J. Anderson has 6 for X.

Saint Joseph's has given up 5 offensive rebounds, but has also forced Xavier into 7 turnovers.

A10: Saint Joseph's Up 4 Late In First

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Saint Joseph's and Xavier have been tight throughout the first half so far, with neither team gaining much ground through the first 10 minutes. The Hawks have pulled ahead to four-point leads twice since.

Rob Ferguson has 6 points for the Hawks, while C.J. Anderson has 6 and Drew Lavender 4 for the Musketeers.

There's a heavily pro-Philly crowd here tonight, with a few hundred St. Joe's students clumped behind both baskets. Temple and Saint Joseph's fans dot the crowd, though there are Xavier loyalists in Boardwalk Hall as well.

A10: Win And The Hawks Are In?

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- If Saint Joseph's can beat Xavier tonight, the Hawks will be able to breathe easier come Selection Sunday. The 20-11 bubble team has routed its two opponents so far in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, avoiding the close games the rest of the A-10 Tournament is producing.

Of course, Joe's may still need to win the whole thing, especially with how unpredictable March has been so far in 2008.

Xavier has had a tournament bid locked up for a while now, but the regular season champion will be attempting to guarantee at least a No. 3 seed in the Big Dance. The Musketeers held off a game Dayton squad yesterday, 74-65, and have run an incredibly efficient offense to a 27-5 record.

The Hawks are no slouch on offense either, and after a pair of incredibly exciting games to close the quarterfinals last night, this game and the Temple-Charlotte nightcap could be more exciting than landing on Free Parking as SJU and TU alums pack Boardwalk Hall.

The first A-10 semifinal tonight tips at 6:30.

A10: Xavier Advances To Semis

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Keyed by threes from Stanley Burrell and Josh Duncan, Xavier used a quick 14-4 run midway through the second half to erase a 2-point Dayton lead. The Flyers never really threatened after that, and Xavier advanced to the Atlantic 10 semifinals with a 74-65 victory.

The Flyers' Marcus Johnson, who scored 26 points, hit a three from the corner with 1:12 left that cut the lead to 7, but Dayton only cut the lead a point by the 30-second mark. Xavier hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to ice it.

X put 5 players in double figures: Josh Duncan with 16, C.J. Anderson 15, Stanley Burrell 13, Drew Lavender 12 and Derrick Brown 11. More stats and such to follow.

A10: Xavier Run Gives Musketeers Edge

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Want to know one of the reasons why Xavier didn't get any players on the first team All-Atlantic 10? The current lineup on the court: Josh Duncan has 16, Derrick Brown 9, C.J. Anderson 10, Drew Lavender 9 and Stanley Burrell 10.

After Dayton grabbed a two-point lead, Xavier has been on a 14-4 run to take a 58-52 lead with just over six minutes left. Burrell's three-pointer with just under 11 minutes left was part of a 12-0 run for Xavier to give the Musketeers a 51-46 lead. Dayton had grabbed its first edge of the second half on a long Brian Roberts 2 about seven minutes in.

Meanwhile, all five Dayton players at one point had three fouls. Xavier's B.J. Raymond and Anderson have four fouls each. Dayton's London Warren landed hard on his tailbone on play he was called for a charge on Duncan earlier this half and hasn't returned. Marcus Johnson now has 19 points for the Flyers.

Wireless continues to get worse at courtside. I'll steal somebody else's seat closer to the routers or blog from the press room if I have to for the next game.

A10: Xavier Up A Half Dozen

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Xavier hasn't really looked back since erasing an early six-point deficit and leads by 6 at halftime over Dayton, 35-29. X led by as many as 12 before a short run by the Flyers cut it to the halftime deficit.

Everything was going right for Xavier at certain points of the first half. The Musketeers -- whose mascot finally showed up, thankfully -- had one sequence where Derrick Brown stole the ball, tossed it to a teammate while falling out of bounds, then got the ball immediately back and was fouled on a fast-break layup.

Marcus Johnson has 10 (but 2 fouls) for the Flyers, while Brian Roberts has 8. Jimmy Binnie also has 3 fouls for Dayton, picking up his third on a charge with just over a minute left in the half. Drew Lavender has 9 for the Musketeers. Derrick Brown and Stanley Burrell have 5 each.

Meanwhile, the wireless internet here at Boardwalk Hall continues to be worse than any of the basketball played so far.

A10: Xavier Thunders Ahead

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Derrick Brown stole the ball and threw down a thunderous dunk to complete a 10-0 run to put Xavier up 8. It's now 25-19 with 7:30 left in the first half.

Dayton called timeout after being outscored 21-7 after being up 10-4 to open the game. Xavier has already drawn 8 fouls.

Brian Roberts has 6 for Dayton, while X's Josh Duncan has 8 and Drew Lavender has 6.

A10: Dayton Out To Early Lead

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Jimmy Binnie has a three-pointer and Dayton is out to an early 10-4 lead at the first media timeout.

Dayton's Jimmy London has the play of the game so far, stripping Xavier's Stanley Burrell in the backcourt and driving in for a tough layup over him about three minutes in.

A10: Xavier-Dayton About To Tip

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- It's a couple minutes 'til tip-off, which means it's a good time to "arrange a meeting place in case of an emergency, at least according to the PA announcer here at Boardwalk Hall. It's also a good time to look at the comments Xavier's Stanley Burrell made earlier this week. (You'll notice that a JPEG of that writer's Fathead is on the side of that blog.) No members of the Musketeers made the All-Atlantic 10 first team, and Burrell -- the A10's Defensive Player of the Year -- was visibly angry.

"It's ridiculous. This league is pathetic," Burrell said. "We went 14-2, top 10 in the nation. Forget first team, Josh is probably the player of the year. You've got the best team and nobody on the first-team all-conference team? It's ridiculous. You talk about not having motivation? We got plenty now. I'm really looking forward to Atlantic City now."

Dayton has a bit more fans here than Xavier, but both teams have decent-sized groups of supporters here in A.C. Dayton has its incredibly creepy mascot, while Xavier counters with a band with full drum set.

A10: Day Two

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Now this was the Atlantic 10 tournament everybody expected. The league's members beat each other up all season; yesterday, games were decided by 1, 2 and 3 points. Despite the close games, all the top seeds managed to hold on, although eighth-seeded Dayton needed OT to do it. Basketball Prospectus predicted a wide-open tournament, and even the teams who survived yesterday are certainly dangerous in quarterfinal matchups today.

Here's what's coming from down the shore at Boardwalk Hall this afternoon.

Musketeers Know How To Win

AMHERST, Mass. -- Xavier epitomizes a lot of things that make a winning team. They do so many things well that it's not surprising that they're 17-4 and on top of the Atlantic 10 at 5-1.

For one, they're balanced. Six players average in double figures per game, and it's a balance that comes naturally as well as from the quality of the players. They trust each other on the floor and complement one another, and this veteran team appears to know what each player can do.

Head coach Sean Miller pointed out the various skills of their players as a natural reason for it. He has a shooter in B.J. Raymond, a versatile combo guard in Stanley Burrell who is shooting a career-best 42 percent from long range this season, a post scorer who can step out and hit jumpers in Josh Duncan, a floor leader who can drive and score in Lavender, a wing who can play well near the basket in C.J. Anderson and a guy who can do a little of everything in Derrick Brown, just for starters.

"You put that whole group together, and it lends itself to a lot of balance," said Miller, who noted that they also rebound by committee.

They also know how to win on the road, as they are now 6-3 in true road games this year. That's not something that happened overnight, as this team has been tested on the road all season long. There have been setbacks, including one that some thought they should not have played in Miami (Ohio), and they were blown out by an Arizona State team that's proven to be better than advertised.

But ever since the new year, this team has turned it up a notch when away from home. Take away the loss at Temple on Jan. 16 and they're perfect on the road in 2008, with wins at Auburn, George Washington and now UMass. For good measure, they haven't just pulled out close ones at the buzzer, winning by an average of over 14 points per game.

"We got to put our foot down somewhere, now we're just taking it one possession at a time and trying to get stops on defense to help us on offense," said Lavender.

More than the balance and the road winning, the Musketeers' defense stood out on Sunday. They held UMass, a team that shoots 45 percent from the field, to 37 percent shooting, and specifically shut down the top Minutemen. Gary Forbes had 16 points but on 5-15 shooting, while Ricky Harris had seven points on 2-8 shooting. In the first half, UMass scored 23 points. That was how the Musketeers had the lead and then won the game while not playing their best offensive basketball as well.

Spearheading the defensive effort was Burrell, who guarded Harris for a good deal of the game. The senior is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Atlantic 10, and he's shown it recently as he shut down Dayton's Brian Roberts on Thursday night and now Harris. While it was a team defensive effort, and the players are quick to cite the trust in each other at both ends of the floor, Burrell certainly helped lead the way. Burrell's scoring numbers are down from a high of his sophomore year, but he's clearly very valuable to this team as a senior and one who's matured over the years.

"We depend on him," said Duncan of Burrell. "He's guarding one of the best players every time we play and he's done a good job. We appreciate the he's working hard to help us on defense and offense."

Xavier also showed an ability to stop the Minutemen from gaining any real momentum. It seemed like every time UMass tried to get a run going, the Musketeers always had an answer. They led by double digits for much of the second half, and when UMass got within five late in the game, the Musketeers responded by scoring the game's final six points.

Lavender, who scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the second half, was at the center of stopping rally attempts. After a Chris Lowe layup made it 63-56, Lavender scored on a driving layup to bring the lead back to nine. After a Gary Forbes free throw brought it back to eight, Lavender drove for another layup to bring the lead back to 10.

"They have a great point guard who does a great job of controlling their team, as well as I've seen," said UMass head coach Travis Ford, himself a former point guard.

"Drew Lavender is the difference in the game," said Miller of his floor leader, who also had a game-high nine rebounds despite being the smallest player on the floor at 5-foot-7. "When he plays at a high level, we're our most difficult to defeat, and that's the player that we had tonight."

The Musketeers seem to have all the ingredients to keep up their winning -- road wins, balance, defense and a floor leader who knows how to run the show.

Xavier Wins

AMHERST, Mass. -- It's all over in Amherst, with Xavier winning this one by a final of 77-65. Xavier improves to 17-4 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10, and they're also 6-3 on the road. UMass falls to 13-6 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic 10.

We'll be back with more following the post-game press conferences.

Musketeers Answer Once More

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Musketeers had one more answer, as Josh Duncan and B.J. Raymond scored consecutive baskets, then Derrick Brown scored off a turnover and got fouled, which sent most of the remaining fans to the exits. With 53 seconds left, Xavier has basically wrapped this up at 74-63.

UMass Trying To Come Back

AMHERST, Mass. -- UMass has gotten back into it, getting within ten on two occasions, including right before the timeout. With 7:56 left, the Musketeers lead 58-48, with UMass having the ball at mid-court.

The crowd has re-awakened and has a little more life. Carmelo Travieso, a member of the Final Four team in 1996, was just introduced as being in attendance, and he got a rousing ovation with fans standing for him.

The band has been bearing down on me all day as my seat is right in front of them, but at halftime it was nice to hear a few tunes from them that had a jazzy feel to them (not the kind of tunes you would typically hear at a basketball game).

Xavier Looking Stronger

AMHERST, Mass. -- Xavier is making this look easy, especially with UMass committing unforced turnovers. The game is far from over, but nothing UMass has done to this point indicates they have a comeback in them. With 11:59 left, Xavier leads, 54-38, and Etienne Brower will shoot three after the timeout. Xavier's Josh Duncan picked up his fourth foul on the play.

We're awaiting updated stats, but as of the last media timeout, Xavier had score more points in the paint in the second half (12) than UMass had scored total (10).

The Musketeers have just one player in double figures to this point (Derrick Brown with 10), but three more have eight apiece: C.J. Anderson, Jason Love and Drew Lavender.

UMass' Papa Lo checked in around the 12 and a half minute mark to a rousing cheer from the crowd.

Musketeers Defend and Run

AMHERST, Mass. -- Xavier continues to break this open. They're defending UMass very well and turning their stops into run-outs, and at the under-16 media timeout they lead 49-33 with 15:10 left to play. Drew Lavender will shoot two free throws after the break, as he got fouled on a good drive to the basket.

Halftime Stats

AMHERST, Mass. -- The halftime stats have rolled in, with neither team back out on the court yet as the four-minute mark approaches.

  • Xavier shot 37 percent from the field in the half, while UMass shot 29.6 percent. The teams combined to go 6-26 from long range.
  • The Musketeers have a 21-16 edge on the boards.
  • The teams combined for 19 turnovers, with Xavier cashing in 10 UMass turnovers for 11 points.
  • No player scored in double figures in the half, with Derrick Brown leading Xavier with eight points and Chris Lowe leading UMass with eight as well.

Related to the last item, keep an eye on Musketeer players who reach double figures, as they are 13-0 when at least four players score in double figures and 3-4 when less than four reach that mark.

Second half action is coming right up.

Xavier Leads At The Half

AMHERST, Mass. -- Xavier scored seven straight points late in the half, but Chris Lowe beat the buzzer with a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it 34-23 Xavier at the half. Neither team is putting on an offensive clinic, as the halftime score would suggest, but if you've been watching the game the score doesn't do it justice.

We'll have stats to give this a little more meaning in just a bit.

UMass Gets Back In It

AMHERST, Mass. -- UMass has made a run of their own, scoring six straight and eight of 10 to make it 27-20 as we reach the final media timeout of the half. About a minute earlier, Xavier called a 30-second timeout after an offensive rebound, as the offense had no one moving around and Sean Miller wisely went to regroup with his guys.

Through the under-eight-minute media timeout, UMass was 5-for-20 from the field and 2-for-8 from downtown. Add in seven turnovers, and it's not a surprise they were down double digits earlier.

Musketeers Keep Going After Run Ends

AMHERST, Mass. -- UMass broke Xavier's 9-0 run with a three-pointer by Etienne Brower, but the Musketeers came right back with four more to make it 25-13 with 7:16 left. The Musketeers are frustrating the Minutemen with their defense to this point. Gary Forbes will shoot two free throws after the timeout.

Noteworthy in this game is that each team has several players who didn't start their careers at their current school. UMass had four transfers sit out during Travis Ford's first season, all playing in this game. Forbes transferred from Virginia, while classmates Etienne Brower (Boston University) and Dante Milligan (Pittsburgh) and junior Luke Bonner (West Virginia) also came from another Division I school. Another former Terrier, Tony Gaffney, sat out last season after transferring. Gaffney always had all the potential, but never the consistency. Now he's been reborn in the role of an energy guy off the bench, although he got the start today.

The Musketeers have a couple of notable transfers of their own. C.J. Anderson is originally from Cincinnati, playing high school ball at Winton Woods High School alongside former Miami guard Robert Hite and former Penn State wing DeForrest Riley-Smith. Starting point guard Drew Lavender began his college career at Oklahoma along with high school teammate Brandon Foust, with each transferring a couple of seasons ago. Foust is now at Southeast Missouri State, a team that started strong in the Ohio Valley Conference but has lost six straight games to fall below .500 in the conference.

Xavier On A Run

AMHERST, Mass. -- UMass has just called a 30-second timeout after Xavier ran off nine unanswered points to take a 21-10 lead. More in a couple of minutes at the under-eight-minute media timeout.

A little note from the last entry: B.J. Raymond is not only Xavier's sixth double-figure scorer on the season, but their leading one (albeit by a slight margin). Not bad for a player who normally comes off the bench.

Xavier Holds Early Edge

AMHERST, Mass. -- We've reached the under-16 media timeout, and Xavier leads 8-7 with 15:56 left to play. A couple of offensive fouls have been called on recent possessions, with each squad getting dinged once.

Both teams have already gone to the bench for a couple of players, and as play has resumed Xavier is about to bring Dante' Jackson into the game. Xavier has brought in B.J. Raymond, one of the top shooters in the conference and their sixth double-figure scorer to go with their starters.

This game has attracted a few notable media members. As I walked into the media room, I saw Jeff Goodman of FOXSports.com, then looked in further and saw that ESPN.com's Andy Katz is also here. CSTV's Road Trippers, Cyrus and Jacob, are here as well.

Xavier-UMass Getting Started

AMHERST, Mass. -- Welcome to the Mullins Center, home of the UMass Minutemen and one of the nicest arenas you will find here in the northeast. Today's game pits the Minutemen against Xavier, picked by most before the season as the team to beat in the Atlantic 10 and having done nothing to change anyone's mind on that thus far.

We apologize for the lateness of our start here, as we got caught up in traffic between Route 116 and the arena. It wouldn't be so bad, except that all the traffic wasn't for fans coming to the game. While the Mullins Center does have a larger-than-usual crowd here, there are still several sections that are almost completely empty. As I walked in, however, I was told that today is move-in day for the students.

This game features the two teams who tied for the regular season title last season, although both teams look a little different than last year. Xavier lost four-year stalwarts Justin Doellman, Justin Cage and Brandon Cole, while the Minutemen lost post studs Stephan Lasme and Rashaun Freeman. For good measure, the Minutemen don't play like they did last season, as they play a much faster pace now.

Of interest: Xavier game notes and UMass game notes.

Today's game is being broadcast on CSTV Regional, with Tom McCarthy on play-by-play and John Griffin providing color commentary.

We'll have more starting with the under-16 media timeout. As we go to print this, Xavier has just tied the game at 4 about two minutes in.

Xavier-Dayton Wrap-Up

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Stanley Burrell has always been able to score. But now he can do so much more. The Xavier guard used his role as a budding defensive stopper to shut down Dayton star Brian Roberts as Xavier dominated Dayton, 69-43, in front of a sellout crowd at Cintas Center.

Roberts scored just five points, and he was only able to get off five shots in the game. Burrell deflected credit for his defensive performance.

"I was really proud of my guys," he said. "They did a great job. I just wanted to do a great job of speeding him up and just frustrating him the whole night."

Xavier head coach Sean Miller agreed with Burrell. He said the Musketeers used a "complete team effort" to shut down Roberts and the Flyers. The 43 points were Dayton's fewest in a game this season. The Flyers' previous low was 55 in a win over Holy Cross.

In addition to his solid defense, Burrell led a balanced Xavier scoring attack with 13 points on five-of-11 shooting. Josh Duncan scored 12 points, and B.J. Raymond added 11 for the Musketeers. Xavier also got a key contribution from reserve freshman guard Dante Jackson, who scored six points and picked four steals in 17 minutes of play.

"Guys like Dante usually hit their stride around Christmas, and I think he did that," Miller said. "Dante Jackson played his best game at Xavier today."

The most important stat of the night was 3-point shooting percentage. Xavier made 11-of-22 long-range shots while Dayton made only two of 18 tries from beyond the arc. The victory was Xavier's twenty-third consecutive win over Dayton in Cincinnati. The two schools meet in Dayton on Feb. 24. Dayton next travels to Richmond Saturday while Xavier heads to UMass on Sunday at noon.

The Lead Is Safe, Sean

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- You've got to figure Sean Miller will get Xavier's key players out of the game soon. No reason to risk injury or extra fatigue for Drew Lavender, Stanley Burrell and Co. tonight. Xavier has extended its lead to 30 points -- yes, 30! -- at 63-33 with 6:09 to play.

Will Dayton Get 40?

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Dayton's lowest point total this season is 55 in a win at Holy Cross. It seems fairly certain that Xavier will hold the Flyers under that number, barring a late barrage from Brian Roberts and Co. after Sean Miller puts in the reserves. Xavier leads, 57-32, with just under eight minutes to play.

I wonder how long Miller will leave his key players in the game. I'm sure a bit of extra rest wouldn't hurt the Musketeers as they must come from the emotional high off this performance and head to Amhert, Mass., for a Sunday afternoon affair with Travis Ford's formidable UMass team. The Minutemen won at Dayton - no easy task - last weekend.

Xavier By 25

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- It's becoming apparent that this is just Xavier's night. The Musketeers keep draining three-pointers and Dayton continues to sputter on offense. Xavier leads 53-28 with 11:44 to play.

Perhaps this performance will assuage some of the fears expressed by a national writer for ESPN.com after Xavier's harder-than-expected win at George Washington over the weekend.

And The Lead Grows

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Xavier continues to pull away from over-matched Dayton here at Cintas Center. Every time Dayton makes a shot, the Musketeers seem to have an answer. After Dayton star Brian Roberts hit his first three of the game, Xavier's Josh Duncan responded by drilling one of his own from the top of the key. Xavier has its largest lead of the game at 47-25 and, with only 14:40 left, Dayton is running out of time to get back into the game.

This game reminds me of the Dayton-Pitt game last month. The home team keeps making shots and, while you wait for the visitors to make a run, it just doesn't seem as though it's going to happen.

Xavier Leads Comfortably At Halftime

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- With a comfortable 16-point lead at halftime, Xavier looks to be well on its way to a 23rd straight win in Cincinnati against Dayton. The Musketeers have played well at home, and Dayton is banged up, but I don't think anyone expected Xavier to dominate play to the degree that it did in the first half.

Xavier coach Sean Miller has to be pleased with his team's defensive performance. The Musketeers are playing hard on the defensive end, especially against Brian Roberts. Xavier has effectively taken Roberts out of the game while leaving open other Dayton shooters, but those players haven't been able to knock down their open looks. The Flyers never made any kind of dent in the Xavier lead. Things instead went the other way, as Xavier methodically extended its lead.

Brian Roberts Has Two Points

CINCINNATI, Ohio - ...and Xavier has a 14-point lead with 3:40 to play in the first half.

Coincidence? I think not.

Despite Stanley Burrell, Jason Love and Drew Lavender all seeing limited action with two fouls, Dayton has not been able to cut into the Musketeers lead. That's in large part because Dayton's All-America candidate hasn't been able to get going. He just missed a short runner in the middle of the lane and shook his head in frustration. We'll see if UD can get the lead down to single digits by halftime.

Remember 8:47

CINCINNATI, Ohio - ... that's when Xavier guard Stanley Burrell, who had been smothering Dayton's Brian Roberts, picked up his second foul and left the game. Xavier led 21-8 at the time. Roberts made his first shot of the game on the ensuing Flyers' possession. Love and Burrell are both on the bench with two fouls for Xavier.

Derrick Brown Can Elevate

CINCINNATI, Ohio - ...and Xavier has taken a 21-8 lead. Dayton remains cold from the outside and Brown just soared for a thunderous dunk, igniting this crowd and forcing Dayton's Brian Gregory to take a timeout.

Xavier Leads Dayton, 15-6

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Musketeers are playing lockdown defense on Dayton, especially Flyers' guard Brian Roberts. He hasn't been able to get so much as a sniff at an open look, and it's showing up on the scoreboard. The Flyers have just six points after eight minutes of play.

Xavier leads by nine, but it has come up empty on multiple possessions in a row. With the type of defense the Musketeers are playing, they could have an even bigger lead right now. They'll need all the lead they can get when the inevitable happens and Roberts heats up.

Xavier Leads Early, Love In Foul Trouble

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Xavier leads, 10-4, in the opening minutes of the rivalry battle with Dayton. Xavier's Josh Duncan nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to give Xavier the six-point margin.

Xavier center Jason Love picked up two fouls in the first three minutes of the game. That means he's probably finished for the first half. Forget what I wrote about his importance in the Xavier game plan!

Xavier-Dayton Preview

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The capacity crowd has filled up Xavier University's sparkling Cintas Center and everyone is all set for perhaps the biggest game in the history of the long Xavier-Dayton rivalry. This is just the second time that both schools have been ranked at the time when playing each other. Given the high profile of both teams -- as well as the Atlantic 10 Conference -- this season, this match-up has received a significant amount of local, regional and national attention.

Dayton has used its depth to upset Louisville and Pitt this season, but the Flyers are banged up - two key players are out with injuries. Look for Xavier to try to exploit the Flyers lack of healthy bodies in the post. Jason Love, the Musketeers' emerging big man, figures to get plenty of touches early in the game. Xavier will use a number of different defensive strategies to try to contain star Dayton guard Brian Roberts. Roberts has shown an ability to take over a game, and he'll need to do that tonight if the Flyers have a chance at snapping streak of 22 straight losses against Xavier in Cincinnati.

The game's on CSTV national television, but keep it here as well for updates at the commercial breaks and at halftime. We'll have a belated post-game wrap-up, but the parking situation here at Cintas Center is mangled, to put it nicely.

Tennessee-Xavier Post-Game Notes

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Not surprisingly, Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl attributed his team's game-winning spurt in the game's final four minutes to superior conditioning.

"In the last couple of minutes our kids pulled together in a very special way," Pearl said of his team's 13-2 run to close the game. "I liked the way we looked and I thought fatigue was a factor [for Xavier]."

Pearl was encouraged by the way his team rallied from a 73-69 deficit.

"In sport, teams pull together or they pull apart at times," Pearl said. " We really pulled together when we got down. I just never saw any doubt in my players' eyes that we were going to win the basketball game. Today was the first day I've seen that look."

The win significantly improves Tennessee's NCAA Tournament resume, Pearl said.

"It's a marquee win for us," Pearl said. "And it would have been a marquee win for Xavier if they would have won."

That if will haunt Xavier for a while, or at least until its game on Friday against Delaware State.

"We lost all concentration at the end of the game, and we can't let that happen," Xavier guard Stanley Burrell said. "When you're up four with 3:41 to go, you don't lose the game."

Unfortunately for Xavier, it did.

No. 12 Tennessee Defeats Xavier, 82-75

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Tennessee put together a 9-0 run in the final three minutes of the game to pull out a score a victory at Xavier Saturday. We'll have a final post after the press conference.

Tennessee Ready To Close It Out

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- No. 12 Tennessee just used a 9-0 run to take control of this game. The Vols lead, 80-75, with 33.9 seconds left. Xavier needs a miracle.

Xavier Leading Tennessee, 73-69

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- It's getting wild here on campus at Xavier. Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl just picked up a technical foul for being out of the coach's box, and Xavier seemingly has the No. 12 Vols on the ropes. But every time it's looked that way, Tennessee has responded.

Case in point: After Xavier made both technical free throws to take a four-point lead, Tennessee stole and inbounds pass and converted. And, on the possession that just led into the under four-minute media timeout, Xavier had a chance to again extend a four-point lead and Derrick Brown was called for a charge as he barrelled down the lane. Tennessee ball, trailing 73-69 with 3:47 left.

Foul Trouble For The Vols

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Tennessee big man Brian Williams just picked up his fourth foul (and nearly got his fifth by arguing the call) on a Xavier put-back attempt. With 7:45 to play, Xavier will shoot two free throws trailing No. 12 Tennessee, 60-59.

Time-out Xavier: Tennessee Leads 60-56

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Tennessee has pulled back in front 60-56 on the strength of a couple of east fast-break baskets. One of the buckets came off a long rebound from a missed three-pointer by Josh Duncan. The Xavier forward continues to come up empty from the outside.

Like Basketball Practice At Moeller H.S.

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- ...except there's 10,000 people watching live and thousands more watching on national TV. But other than that, it's like the good ole days for Tennessee's Ryan Childress and Moeller's Josh Duncan. Those two former high school teammates are battling each other in the post, and each just came up with big baskets against the other.

Childress just scored on and got fouled, which was followed by a technical foul on Xavier coach Sean Miller, who thought Childress should've been called for a charge. Xavier 54-53.

Xavier-Tennessee Tied At 45-45

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- What we've seen through the first 25 minutes of this game has shown why this was the toughest ticket in town this weekend (well, there wasn't much competition for that title -- Bengals vs. Browns doesn't exactly have scalpers salivating). Both teams are flying around, putting their athleticism on display in front of this sellout crowd at Cintas Center. Xavier scored the first four points of the half to take its first lead of the game, but this one has down-to-the-wire written all over it, especially if Stanley Burrell's 3-pointer a few minutes ago gets the Xavier guard going.

Halftime Score: No. 12 Tennessee 39, Xavier 36

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl has to enter the locker room happy that his team has responded to every Xavier run with a big shot to keep the lead. Those big shots include two in the final minute of the half. The first one was luck as 6-foot-9 forward Wayne Chism banked in a three-pointer to break a tie that Xavier's Stanley Burrell had just forced with a three on the Muskies' previous possession.

Then, after an acrobatic tip-in by Xavier's Adrion Graves, Tennessee forward Ryan Childress, playing in the town where he starred at Moeller High School, grabbed a loose ball and layed in a runner from the left side in the closing seconds of the half to give Tennessee a 39-36 halftime lead. You've got to figure the second half will contain more of the same.

Tennessee must continue hitting shots to hang on and win this game, but the Vols have to feel pretty good to have a lead on the road against a Top 25-caliber team while only getting six first-half points from preseason All-American Chris Lofton. If Lofton can locate his shooting touch in the second half, the Vols might be able to pull away.

Similarly for the Muskies, star guard Stanley Burrell offered little in the opening half, scoring only six points of his own and committing three turnovers. Burrell has struggled in big games throughout his career at Xavier, and if Sean Miller and company are going to pull the upset, Burrell must get himself on track.

Xavier also must get something out of forward Josh Duncan, who was 0-for-6 shooting (0-for-4 on three-pointers) and did not score in 16 minutes of play in the half. If Duncan and Burrell combine for only six points again in the second half, Xavier won't win this game. Just as Pearl probably feels good to be up three with little production from Lofton, Xavier coach Sean Miller is likely not disappointed to be down three while getting so few points out of two of his key players.

Tennessee Has 30-25 Lead On Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Tennessee continues to withstand Xavier's attempts to take the lead. The Volunteers have led the whole way in the first half, despite Xavier cutting the lead to two points once and three points multiple times. The Vols are playing with the type of poise you'd expect out of a national title contender.

One thing to note: Official Joe Lindsay has already given both benches a sideline warning, and he seems liable to hit UT coach Bruce Pearl with a technical at any moment.

Big Swing

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Xavier's brief attempt to capture the momentum just took a big blow as Josh Duncan barely missed an open three that would have cut the lead to one and Tennessee responded with a dunk plus a foul.

Tennessee Leads By Seven

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Tennessee continues to do enough to maintain its lead. Xavier has played hard, but isn't making enough shots to put together a run. Tennessee has kept the Musketeers around by taking some ill-advised outside shots on recent possessions, but that's likely an unavoidable side effect of the Volunteers' fast-paced style of play. Just under eight minutes left in the first half, it's Tennessee 23, Xavier 16.

Timeout Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Xavier coach Sean Miller just called the game's first time-out after Tennessee extended its lead to 19-8 with 12:21 to play in the first half. The Volunteers' aggressive defense continues to cause Xavier fits, and the Muskies will need more out of Josh Duncan and Stanley Burrell if they're going to hang around in this game.

Tennessee Leads Xavier, 11-6

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Tennessee came out shooting like it practices all week at Cintas Center. Dwayne Chism and Chris Lofton each hit three-pointers as the Vols opened an 11-4 lead on Xavier. The Musketeers have been plagued by turnovers. The atmosphere at Cintas Center is amped up for a game of this magnitude, and the fans seem to be waiting for a Xavier run to get excited.

Xavier-Tennessee Pre-Game Notes

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The wireless is finally up and working here on press row at Xavier's Cintas Center, and we are 10 minutes away from tip-off in the Musketeers' biggest non-conference home game (non-Crosstown Shootout edition) in program history. Xavier hosts No. 12 Tennessee today, and a sellout crowd is expected here on campus. The key to the game might be the play of Xavier point guard Drew Lavender. The Muskies will count on the diminutive floor general to handle the frenetic pace that Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl would like to ramp up in this game. We'll have updates at each media time-out, so stay tuned.

Xavier Finishes The Upset

CHICAGO -- Xavier completed the upset, winning, 80-65. CJ Anderson led Xavier in scoring with 19, 12 in the second half. BJ Raymond also had 19.

Eric Gordon had 20 from Indiana but was only 4-for-12 from the field. He was 12-for-12 from the line. DJ White had 16.

As a team, Indiana was a woeful 1-for-15 from three-point range on the evening. Xavier wasn't a whole lot better at 4-for-13.

Gordon, White, Anderson and Josh Duncan were on the All-Tournament Team, and Anderson, who doesn't start for Xavier, was named the MVP. How Burrell wasn't on it is beyond me. He defended Gordon about as well as he will be defended all year.

The Musketeers are accepting their trophy, which is a big cup. The Xavier radio guys next to me, especially Larkin, are pretty excited.

This is a big win for Xavier's at-large tournament hopes. It'll be a real feather in their cap come selection Sunday, and might make the committee folks look the other way at that Miami (Ohio) loss.

That's a wrap from Chicago. Time for some good pizza.

Running Out Of Time

CHICAGO -- Indiana is running out of time, and now, thankfully, they are out of timeouts also. So is Xavier, so maybe the last two minutes won't be as slow as usual. IU is pressing and fouling, trying to get back in, but they still trail by 11 with 2:05 to go.

The result is in doubt only if Xavier can't hit their free throws, which hasn't been a given so far.

Indiana Not Getting Any Closer

CHICAGO -- We have come to the last TV timeout and Indiana isn't closing the gap any. Eric Gordon is scoring, albeit from the free throw line, but Xavier has the answer at the other end. The Muskies are still beating IU down the floor and getting good shots inside. And if they could hit a free throw, this would really be ugly.

DJ White just picked up his fourth foul right before the time out as Josh Duncan hit another layup for Xavier. He'll be at the line when we resume.

Anderson Carrying Musketeers

CHICAGO -- C.J. Anderson is having a big second half for Xavier with nine points and is causing all kinds of havoc in the paint. With D.J. White backing off some because of foul trouble, Anderson has gotten to the hole with ease and would have more if he could hit a free throw.

Derrick Brown just fouled out taking a charge from Eric Gordon that was called a block on him, so Gordon will go to the line when we get back on the floor. It's 62-49 Xavier with 6:41 to go.

Xavier Maintaining Pace

CHICAGO -- Xavier is getting the game played at their pace, which is a bit up and down, and they still lead, 56-43. Eric Gordon is forcing shots and forcing action where it isn't there, and that isn't helping the Hoosiers. D.J. White is being less aggressive in the post trying to avoid his fourth foul, so Xavier is getting some put back chances and taking advantage.

Luke Stempler of Indiana became the third player to pick up his fourth foul since the start of the half. Stempler came in when DeAndre Thomas picked up his fourth foul a few minutes ago.

The Correct Answer: Neither

CHICAGO -- Two guys have picked up their fourth fouls, but neither were D.J. White or Eric Gordon. DeAndre Thomas got his almost immediately after my last post, and Xavier's Derrick Brown picked up two quick ones to give him four.

White and Gordon are trying to bring the Hoosiers back, but Xavier keeps breaking down the IU defense for easy shots. Xavier still leads by 10 at the first TV timeout.

Fourth Foul Pool

CHICAGO -- Marlen Garcia and I have a bet on who gets their fourth foul first, Eric Gordon or D.J. White.

Right before the half, the ref came over by where we're sitting with the ball and was chatting with a couple of kids. They asked him about his Thanksgiving and where he lived and all that, and he let them hold the ball for a minute. When it was time to get ready, he told the kids, "Now, you can yell at the other two all you want."

DeAndre Thomas just picked up his third foul in the first ten seconds of the half, and Marlen says, "We should have put money on DeAndre."

Note, no actual money is going to change hands.

The IU cheerleaders came out during a Xavier timeout and seem a little more pleading with their cheers. The IU fans aren't responding much.

Hoosiers Hurtin'

CHICAGO -- The Hoosiers are hurting at the half, down, 40-29, to Xavier. B.J. Raymond hit a 15-footer at the horn to finish the scoring in the first half. With two second left, Indiana finally passed the ball in to D.J. White on the blocks, but he was called for an offensive foul, his third. He joins Gordon with three, and that could be a problem the entire second half.

After Gordon went out, IU struggled a bit. They scored on their first two possessions, but only scored twice after that. Their offense looks a lot like last night's -- pass the ball around the perimeter and hope a guard hits a shot. The problem is that Gordon isn't there to take the shot.

We were just entertained by the Shamrox Girls dance team. IU fans didn't seem too entertained.

Raymond leads Xavier with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from long range. Josh Duncan and Drew Lavender have six each, and Lavender has six assists.

White is Indiana's leading scorer with 10, all of which he created for himself. He also has seven boards. Gordon has four on 1-of-6 shooting. Burrell really harassed him into a frustrating half. Jamarcus Ellis has six points for the Hoosiers and Armon Bassett has five.

Xavier Zoning Out

CHICAGO -- Xavier switched to a zone as soon as Eric Gordon went out of the game with mixed results. Indiana scored twice quickly to cut the lead to one, but Xavier responded with a little 6-2 run where they just beat the Hoosiers down the floor on offense. The Muskies lead, 31-26, with 2:39 to go in the first half.

The cheerleaders seem unperturbed by these developments. Their level of peppiness never changes.

Gordon On The Bench

CHICAGO -- The foul on Eric Gordon that I mentioned in the last post was his second. On the first possession after the timeout, he picked up his third, so he's going to sit the last seven minutes of this half. He has four points so far.

DeAndre Thomas is back in for IU and he has two fouls.

Lace Up The Track Shoes

CHICAGO -- A track meet has broken out at the Sears Centre. In the last two minutes, there have been three dunks and a driving layup as we continue to go back and forth. Right now Indiana leads, 20-19, but by the time I'm done typing this, I'm sure it'll change.

There was a call against Xavier that Muskie radio analyst and former player Bryan Larkin didn't agree with and he was waving his arm in disgust. The call was a block on a drive by Eric Gordon to the hoop. They just called a charge on Gordon on the same kind of play and he threw up his arms in celebration. I may need a seatbelt before the night's over.

Oh, look, a Xavier tip and a three, and it's 24-20 Xavier at the eight-minute timeout.

Things Getting Feisty

CHICAGO -- This has been a hard-fought game, and things are getting a little feisty. The refs have had to talk to players twice already to calm things down.

Xavier and Indiana are tied at 12, and Eric Gordon isn't on the board yet. Stanley Burrell is doing a good job frustrating him, but he's out of the game at the moment.

D.J. White is being ignored by his teammates on the offensive end still, so he's creating his own offense. He has five points on two putbacks and a free throw.

Xavier guard Drew Lavender, who transferred from Oklahoma, where he used to play for Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson has been forcing things a bit and needs to settle down.

Is There An Engineer In The House?

CHICAGO -- A team of surgeons has been called in to try to figure out the problem with the net. I think Hugh Laurie has been spotted.

Meanwhile, I went back for some pizza in the media room. My friend, USA Today Sportswriter and food critic, Marlen Garcia, warned me that it was bad, and she's right. It was awful. Now, we're in Chicago (or close enough). To get bad pizza around here, it almost has to be a goal. There needs to be a task force, meetings, etc. to get something like that done. I can't even make bad pizza, and I can't cook anything tougher than Spaghettio's. Maybe it's imported from Canada. Or New York.

Hey! In the time it took me to write that, they fixed the net, the teams went through a couple of minutes of layup lines, and we're ready to restart the game.

Rim Rattling Dunk

CHICAGO -- Xavier's Derrick Brown just electrified the crowd and damaged the basket with rim-rattling dunk on a fast break to give the Muskies a 4-3 lead. He also got fouled and will go to the line when they fix the net.

IU is manhandling Xavier's smaller front line inside. D.J. White and DeAndre Thomas are throwing their weight around and getting almost any rebound they want.

Stanley Burrell has been given the assignment of guarding Eric Gordon, and so far, he's kept him out of the score book. Of course, we're only three minutes in.

More Xavier-Indiana Pregame Bits

CHICAGO -- The starting lineups are about to be introduced, but the crowd is now here and ready. It's about the same size as last night's crowd, but most of them must be drinking. There is a bit of eau de frat house in the atmosphere.

When Indiana's cheerleaders come out to lead the team on to the floor, they run their big flags down to where the other team warms up and wave them behind their basket. Then, the girls run out with the little flags that spell "Indiana" and do a couple of laps around the other team while they're warming up. I bet that goes over real well. The other team is probably coming up with places they'd like to stick those flags.

Armon Basset is in the lineup for Indiana tonight. He injured his foot last night and there was some concern he might not play today.

The tip is moments away.

Kent State Wins, Moves On To Main Event

CHICAGO -- Kent State finished off Illinois State, 65-59. Without seeing a stat sheet, I'll guess that ISU shot worse and took care of the ball worse. The Redbirds had some moments, but the Flashes were more consistent and that's why they come away with the victory. I'll try to get some stats.

Indiana is taking the floor to warm up, wearing their usual candy striper pants. All they need is those little, paper nurses hats and their costumes would be complete.

Xavier has also entered the arena and started playing a game of hot potato.

Indiana was all Eric Gordon last night, and that's been the case all year. I'm not sure if Xavier has a guy who can check him all night, but I think it behooves the Hoosiers to get DJ White more involved. He was a cipher last night because his teammates ignored him, preferring to play one-on-one ball.

Xavier played well when it played hard last night, but that was only in spurts. The Musketeers will need a full 40-minute effort to stay with IU.

All of a sudden, a Wisconsin football game has broken out. The PA is now exhorting us to jump around. Apparently this crowd does not follow instructions well. We probably won't even have a decent wave.

Xavier Advances

CHICAGO -- All it took was a couple of back door cuts to put finally put Kent St away for good. Once Kent State went into desperation press mode, Xavier was able to get easy looks at the basket and finished off a 78-65 win. The Musketeers will play the winner of the Indiana vs. Illinois State game tomorrow night.

I'll be back with stats if I'm allowed to have any. Stat reporting has been pretty spotty on press row.

Late in the game, Stanley Burrell came running into our table on press row and messed up one of the seating assignment signs. Burrell cleaned up after himself though. He made sure to straighten it out before he went back onto the floor.

Someone call maintenance to replace the net at our end of the floor between games. Play has been stopped four times just since I got here because it keeps getting caught up on the rim after the ball goes through.

For our between game entertainment, we get "Ice, Ice, Baby" over the PA. That's appropriate, because it's freezing in here.

Kent Not Going Away

CHICAGO -- Just when you think Kent St is done, they come back. Rodriguez Sherman, who sounds like he was named backwards, scored the last five points of a 7-0 run to cut the Xavier lead to six at the four-minute timeout.

It also appears I have overestimated the enthusiasm of Indiana fans for this event. The arena is maybe half full, and I would have guess at this point, the IU-ISU game is not going to be a sellout or even close.

Xavier Pulling Away

CHICAGO -- Josh Duncan stepped aside to let someone else have some fun, and Derrick Brown has taken over again. Brown had a rim-rattling dunk and one as part of the latest Xavier run that has the Muskies up 13 with just under five to go.

Dunk-an On 7-0 Run

CHICAGO -- Josh Duncan is on a 7-0 run for Xavier and the lead is back up to nine. He hit a three in the corner, then drove to the hole for two and finally took a nice feed from Stanley Burrell and dunked it.

So far, Xavier is playing harder when Burrell is in the game.

Flashes Coming Back

CHICAGO -- Kent State did match Xavier's intensity, or more accurately, Xavier's intensity faded some, and the Flashes are back in it. At the 12 minute timeout, its 46-43 Muskies. Kent State had a 7-0 run started by Mike Scott hitting two free throws and then beating the Xavier defense back for a layup.

Xavier started getting sloppy with the ball and shot selection, but once Stanley Burrell came back in, they settled down.

We're starting to see some folks in the upper deck here as the Indiana fans continue to stream in. There has been no Eric Gordon sighting yet, though. I'm sure we'll hear it when there is.

Kent State Suffering, Brown Out

CHICAGO -- Derrick Brown has six points early in the second half, including an electrifying drive and dunk, to pace Xavier to a 39-32 lead with 17:25 left. The Muskies have stepped up the intensity a notch to start the second half, and the Flashes better match it soon, or they'll get blown out of here.

Ohio Battle At The Half

CHICAGO -- Xavier leads Kent State, 31-30, at the half in a pretty hard-fought game. This has more of a football feel to it, which I suppose is pretty appropriate since these schools are from Ohio.

It's cold in the arena, and it's not just the shooting. Kent is actually shooting worse than Xavier is. The Musketeers are 11-23 from the floor, while the Flashes are 10-29. Kent is staying in it by crashing the offensive glass. They are outrebounding Xavier, 19-14, and have eight offensive rebounds.

Josh Duncan has 10 points to lead Xavier, and Mike Scott has matched that for Kent.

Indiana fans are starting to file in, but the place is still pretty empty, which is surprising. IU fans are usually an early arriving crowd. Maybe they got caught in shopping traffic. We're not far from Woodfield Mall, which is the largest in the Chicago area.

Kent State Bench Carrying The Load

CHICAGO -- At the four-minute timeout, Kent St leads by two, and Xavier has to be happy that its that close. It's been a frustrating shooting half for Xavier, although that is anecdotal. We don't have any sort of live stats here.

I can tell you that the Flashes have 15 of their 26 points off the bench, and their leading scorer, Mike Scott has 8 of the 11 contributed by the starters.

If Xavier ever gets its shots to start falling, they can run away from Kent.

Fisher Leads Kent State Back

CHICAGO -- Al Fisher came off the bench to spark a Kent State rally, and the Flashes lead, 17-15, at the second timeout. Fisher has eight of Kent State's points.

At the other end, Kent is still having trouble closing off the middle, but the shots aren't always falling for Xavier.

Foul trouble could become an issue. Kent State already has six team fouls with 12 minutes left.

Xavier Getting Inside

CHICAGO -- At the first timeout, Xavier leads 8-6 thanks to some good play inside. When they are patient enough, they have been able to get good looks down low.

The Kent St radio guy is still having trouble. He's calling the game on the phone, but has been kicked off the air once already.

As exciting as this game us, much of press row is following the LSU-Arkansas football game. There are a lot of Ohio folks here who have an interest in that game because it could help the Buckeyes.

Xavier Off To Good Start

CHICAGO -- After Derrick Brown missed two FTs, Xavier scored on its next two possessions for an early 4-0 lead. The Muskies have been tough on D also, forcing a shot clock violation. Kent already used a timeout to stop the bleeding.

Xavier-Kent St Pregame

CHICAGO -- We're about 30 minutes or so from tip off of the first game of the evening session in the Chicago Challenge between Xavier and Kent St, provided the first game ever ends. Coppin State and SE Missouri State are about to go to their second overtime.
