Survive and Advancing, UT Back to Sweet 16

BIRMINGHAM - Survive and advance.

That's the name of the game this time of year, and that's just what Tennessee did.

Tennessee got a layup in overtime from Ramar Smith with just 27 seconds left, and Jujuan Smith made all four of his free throws in the final seconds to ice the game and give Tennessee a 76-71 win Sunday in Birmingham.

Tennessee will meet the winner of the Louisville-Oklahoma game in the Sweet 16 in Charlotte, N.C.

Tennessee Hangs On in OT

BIRMINGHAM - Ramar Smith made a layup with 27 seconds left and Jujuan Smith made free throws to give the Vols a 4-point lead in overtime.

Julian Betko fouled Jujuan Smith after making one of two free throws with 5 seconds left. Jujuan again made both free throws to stretch the lead out to 5 with just 4 seconds remaining to ice the game.

UT wins 76-71.

More to come from this crazy opener in Birmingham...

UT up 2

BIRMINGHAM - Wayne Chism made a basket, and Tyler Smith blocked an A.J. Graves layup with 35 seconds left. UT has a 70-68 lead with 33 seconds left.

Tennessee has the ball out of a timeout.

Overtime To Settle It

BIRMINGHAM - Willie Veasley had a putback layup after J.P. Prince committed a turnover with 35 seconds left to nod the game at 63. Tennessee played for one shot, but Prince traveled to turn the ball over. Without a timeout, Butler couldn't setup a play. Mike Green and Prince battled down the court and Prince was able to knock the ball free and deny Green a shot as time expired.

We're headed to an extra period in Birmingham... Don't go away.

Nailbiter in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM - Butler had a chance to take the lead, but Mike Green committed a charge.

The turnover led to a missed shot, but J.P. Prince was there for the follow to flush it down and give UT a 3-point lead. It's 58-55 UT with 3:26 left in the game.

This one is going down to the wire... stay tuned.

Vols Still Lead But Can't Put It Away

BIRMINGHAM - Tennessee just had a 7-point lead cut down to four with a three-pointer from Julian Betko as we have just under 8 minutes to go here in Birmingham.

Tennessee had 3 possessions to create a double-digit lead, but couldn't do it. Now, Butler is still very much in the game.

UT Up 5, Butler Hangin Tough

BIRMINGHAM - Butler just got a big three pointer from Drew Streicher to cut the deficit to five points.

Tennessee is still in control, but the Bulldogs are hanging tough with 13:24 to go.

UT Doubles Halftime Lead

BIRMINGHAM - A jumper from Tyler Smith and a dunk by Wayne Chism has UT up 8 right out of the gates on a 4-0 run.

Chism also picked up his 3rd foul and is now out of the game.

Lofton Answers At The Half

BIRMINGHAM - Bruce Pearl pulled Chris Lofton and Wayne Chism out of the game on what was thought to be the last possession of the half. Someone missed an assignment and Pete Campbell was left all alone on the wing.

Campbell drained the trey to cut it down to 1, but Pearl subbed Lofton back in the game.

Butler Bulling Its Way Back

BIRMINGHAM - Looks like I was wrong about my foul trouble strategy. Butler has gotten 5 points from A.J. Graves and a 3 from Pete Campbell to bring them closer to Tennessee.

Jujuan Smith answered the 7-0 run with a nice move in the lane for a shot of the glass, but the Bulldogs are definitely back in it with just under four minutes to go.

UT leads 29-23.

BIRMINGHAM - The fouls are starting to mount, and it looks like that's going to hurt the Bulldogs more than the Vols.

Both teams have key players with two fouls -- Butler's Mike Green and Pete Campbell and Tennessee's Chris Lofton and Wayne Chism.

Graves Can't Find His Shot

BIRMINGHAM - Fresh off a tremendous performance in game one, A.J. Graves has been shut out so far in game two.

The senior guard is 0-for-4 from deep as the Vols maintain control of the game with under 12 to go. Tennessee leads 17-6.

Vols Red Hot...

BIRMINGHAM - The Tennessee Volunteers couldn't buy a 3-point shot in Round 1, but they cannot miss out of the gates.

They are 3-for-4 out of the gates and control an 11-2 lead. Wayne Chism, Chris Lofton and Jujuan Smith have nailed trifectas, and Butler has made several uncharacteristic turnovers. Just under 16 to go...

Tennessee, Butler Ready To Tangle

BIRMINGHAM - Get ready to witness a little history.

In the NCAA Tournament, never have two 30-win teams met as early as the second round. That's what Tennessee and Butler will do in about one hour at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center in Birmingham.

On paper, the game looks to be the most exciting of the Birmingham bracket, with both teams able to throw up points in bunches.

Butler Bulls Past Jags, Will Face UT

BIRMINGHAM - Butler's star point guard Mike Green only had five points.

It didn't even matter. The 7-seeded Bulldogs got 26 from Pete Campbell and 18 from A.J. Graves as Butler crushed 10-seed South Alabama 81-61.

Green got into early foul trouble and was on the bench for most of the half. The 2-guard, Graves, slid over to play the point, and his job was simple: Give it to Campbell.

"It was a unique situation with Mike being out," Graves said. "Pete came off the bench and made some huge shots."

Campbell was 8-of-10 from 3-point land. Asked jokingly if Butler liked playing in Birmingham because of the friendly rims, Graves said, "I don't think any of Pete's shots hit the rim."

Butler made its Sweet 16 run in 2003 with two wins in Birmingham.

"I've heard people say that A.J. is a catch-and-shoot guy, but he was a great point guard his first two years here," Butler coach Brad Stevens said. "It's just when MIke Green came in [to Butler], we moved A.J. over, because they complement each other so well."

South Alabama's leading scorer Demetric Bennent was held to just 6 points on 2-of-7 shooting. Stevens said Drew Streicher did a great job defending Bennent.

"Drew has guarded the other team's best statistical player in almost every game this season," he said. "What he did today was unbelievable."

Butler made 15 3-point baskets, just six shy of the NCAA Tournament record. The win was Butler's 30th of the season, a school record.

Butler plays Tennessee, a team they beat last season, in the second round Sunday.

Butler Wins 81-61

BIRMINGHAM - It wasn't even close. Pete Campbell and A.J. Graves led Butler to a 20-point win in the first round of the tournayyment. Butler will face Tennessee Sunday.

I'll be back with quotes and notes.

Butler Keeps Rollin Along

BIRMINGHAM - Butler had a 17-point lead at the half, and they haven't even blinked.

Pete Campbell has 26 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the 3-point line. A.J. Graves had 18 points. Now, all the reserves are in for the Bulldogs as they lead 70-45 with 8 minutes to go.

3-Point Barrage Frustrating Jags...

BIRMINGHAM - The frustration is obvious on the faces of the USA Jaguars.

After a quick 4-0 start, Butler has answered with 9 points off of three 3-point baskets. A.J. Graves has his running total to 16 points with a couple of treys and Julian Betko scratched his scoring card with a long-range 3.

USA looks demoralized. This one could get uglier than it already is...

Tilford With the Pilfer

BIRMINGHAM - USA's Domonic Tilford has consecutive steals and fastbreak layups to get the Jags off to a quick 4-0 start in the second half. They still trail by 13, but they forced Butler to use a quick timeout.

Campbell...Mmm, Mmm Good

BIRMINGHAM - Butler reserve forward Pete Campbell is putting the Bulldogs on his back. With leading scorer, MIke Green out for most of the first half, Campbell has drained six 3-pointers and has 20 points in the first half. Butler leads 47-30 at the half.

Where'd You Go?

BIRMINGHAM - Almost 15 minutes into this game, the leading scorers for both teams have not recorded a point.

Back and Forth We Go

BIRMINGHAM - Daon Merritt now has 10 points for USA as the Jags lead 20-19 with 10:36 left in the half.

USA is controlling Butler on the boards early with a 9-2 rebounding advantage. Also, Brandon Davis and Ronald Douglas have 4 points each for USA in the low blocks.

Graves tacked on another sweet lay-up to give him 7 points already.

Merritt, Graves Controlling Early

BIRMINGHAM - Daon Merritt has 7 of South Alabama's 11 points with just under 15 minutes to go in the first half, as the Jags lead Butler 11-7.

A.J. Graves has 5 of the Bulldogs' 7 points. It's a very up-tempo game with a lot of running up and down the court.

As I type, of course, Butler's Pete Campbell has made two 3's, and South Alabama got basket from Ronald Douglas and a 3 from DeAndre Coleman. 15-13 Butler

NCAA Tournament Preview: Birmingham

Friday's action in the NCAA Tournament will get kicked into high gear from the start as the high-octane Tennessee Volunteers will tip things off in Birmingham at 11:15 a.m. ET.

Bruce Pearl's troops will battle No. 15 seed American, who is making its first tourney appearance.

The first session wraps up with an intriguing matchup with perenniel mid-major power Butler taking on 10-seeded South Alabama, who will make a short trip up Interstate 65 to play.

Horizon: Butler Too Much for Cleveland State

INDIANAPOLIS - If Jim Boeheim, Gary Williams and Thad Matta sneak in an extra wink of sleep tonight, they'll have the Butler Bulldogs to thank. To the joy of bubble teams everywhere - including Syracuse, Maryland and Ohio State - No. 12 Butler ran away from Cleveland State SCORE in the Horizon League Championship Tuesday night and held open one more spot in the 65-team NCAA Tournament field. The Butler win assures that the Bulldogs - who long ago clinched a bid to the Big Dance - will be the only team from the Horizon League to make the field. A Cleveland State victory would have forced Butler into the field as an at-large, and thus would have stolen a spot that will instead go to one of those bubble dwellers.

Horizon: Vikings Hang Around

INDIANAPOLIS - Butler has cooled off a bit, in large part because Cleveland State has significantly upped its aggression and intensity on defense. The Bulldogs have forced a few off-balance shots that aren't falling, and the Vkings have scrapped for a few stickbacks to clip the deficit back into single digits. Butler leads 25-16 with just under eight minutes to play in the first half. Coach Gary Waters would likely be pleased if the Vikings can get this down to five by halftime.

Horizon: Butler Extends the Lead

INDIANAPOLIS - To answer the question from the previous post: No, absolutely not, Cleveland State had not withstood Butler's opening salvo. Out of the media time-out, Pete Campbell and Drew Streicher each hit three-pointers to push Butler's lead to 20-6. This crowd at Hinkle is really into the game, and so is one loud and obnoxious Cleveland State fan who happens to be sitting right behind me.

On each Butler free-throw, he is yelling some unintelligible word that sounds like "Jacket!" Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't it benefitting his Vikings so far. In fact, the only free throw Butler has missed came when Mr. Fan was apparently distracted by his wife. She, by the way, must be dying of embarrassment. Or maybe she's just happy to have him out of the house.

Horizon: Hot Start For Butler

INDIANAPOLIS - Butler scored the game's first seven points, and it wasn't all that difficult. Two lay-ups and an open three-pointer, combined with three Cleveland State turnovers, allowed the Bulldogs to jump on the Vikings 7-0 here in the Horizon league title game. Butler pushed the lead to 10 to an A.J. Graves triple before a CSU basket narrowed the margin to eight.

The Vikings played about as poorly as possible in the game's opening minutes and have shown signs of calming down. Have they withstood Butler's initial spurt? We'll find out in the next five minutes.

Horizon Title Game Preview

INDIANAPOLIS - You couldn't blame Gary Waters and his Cleveland State baskeball team if they feel a little lonely tonight. If the Vikings are to earn the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1986, they'll have to do it as the visiting team here at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, against the host No. 12 Butler Bulldogs. And the crowd here at Hinkle won't be alone in rooting for Butler tonight. So will every other bubble team in the country.

Drake-Butler postgame

Several of Drake's fans are still hanging around Hinkle after the game, cheering on the players as they emerge from the locker room.

Some stats and notes from Drake's 71-64 win over Butler.

Both teams shot 24-54 from the floor. Drake made one less three pointer, shooting 5-17. Butler was 6-24, but only 1-8 in the second half. The teams each averaged just over 9 made threes per game, so those are pretty low totals.

Drake won the game at the line, shooting 18-20 Butler was 10-16, with a couple of missed front ends of 1-and-1s in the second half.

In the first half, Butler had 8 assists and one turnover. In the second half, they had two assists and 9 turnovers.

Drake outrebounded Butler by seven today, which lines up with the team stats. Drake has a 3 board per game lead over its opponents, but Butler gets outrebounded by an average of one per game.

Josh Young led Drake with 25 points on 7-13 shooting from the floor, including 3-5 from beyond the arc. He was also 8-8 from the line.

Leonard Houston had 16 and Jonathan Cox had 11 in support.

Butler was led by Graves' 18 and Matt Howard's 16. Mike Green had 12.

There were only four fast break points in the entire game, two by each team.

There wasn't much noteworthy said after the game. Butler coach Brad Stevens and Graves, already changed into a t-shirt and jeans, were pretty somber, as you might expect.

Keno Davis, Josh Young and Adam Emmenecker were happier, of course, but not in the "we've never done this before" way. They weren't overly exuberant either.

Emmenecker did talk about how they were looking forward to playing here. He said, "It's a historic place. We were all excited to come here. Even though I'm from Michigan, I had heard a lot about this place. It's an honor to play here."

And that's a wrap from Indy. I think security may have to kick the Drake fans out. They aren't in any hurry to go.

Coming Attractions: Drake at Butler

Drake and Butler meet today in the highlight game of this year's bracket buster series to decide which is the better Bulldog. There isn't much else at stake though. Like most of the bracket buster games over the years, this one really has no bearing on selection for the tournament. Both of these teams are in barring a major collapse.

Seeding could be affected though. Neither team has a win over a sure tournament team this year, and neither has even played many. Drake's best opponent by far was St. Mary's, which beat the Bulldogs in the second game of the year. Butler smoked Ohio St at home in December. The committee is unlikely to reward either of these teams with terribly high seeds (compared to their respective poll rankings), but the winner would have an edge over the loser.

Both teams like to bomb away from the three-point line. Drake is 15th in the nation in made threes per game with 9.3, and Butler is right behind them at 9.2. Both are also in the top 25 in the nation in free throw percentage, which makes coming back on either of them difficult.

The game may end up getting won in the post then, where Butler has freshman Matt Howard. Howard is having a terrific debut season, leading the Horizon league in FG percentage. He is also second in offensive rebounds and fourth in blocked shots. Keeping him off the offensive glass will be a key for Drake.

They also need to stop the penetration of Mike Green, who creates a lot off offense for Butler by getting into the lane.

For Drake, the formula is easy - hit their long range shots and take care of the ball. Sophomore Josh Young leads the league in three pointers made and is second in scoring. His range has no limit and he doesn't care if he's open. When I saw him at Illinois St a few weeks ago, he only shot two of his 11 three pointers inside of 25', and was only a step closer on those. Only four or five of those shots were open. In spite of that, he's second in the league and 33rd nationally in three point percentage.

You can follow along with the action in the box below. You can vote in polls, comment or ask questions about the game, so feel free to pitch in.

No. 16 Butler Tops Valpo, 73-65

INDIANAPOLIS -- Here are some stats and notes from Butler's 73-65 win over Valparaiso.

I mentioned this in the live blog, but it bears repeating. The most surprising stat of the year so far: Butler sharpshooter AJ Graves is now 0-16 from beyond the three point line in Horizon League play after missing all of his five attempts today. He's 48-104 in non-conference games.

Mike Green had a huge day, leading Butler with 24 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor, including 3-4 on threes, 11-14 from the line. Valpo could do nothing to stop his penetration.

Jarryd Loyd led the Crusaders in scoring with 15, many of which came during their furious comeback attempt at the end of the game. Brandon McPherson, Samuel Haanpaa and Jake Diebler each scored ten.

Valpo outshot and outrebounded Butler today, but lost the game with turnovers (16 to 10 for BU) and free throws (10-17 vs 28-33 for Butler).

Even though two players fouled out, Valpo only played seven guys more than two minutes. One got about 5 seconds at the end of the game.

We found out from Green after the game that around his hometown of Zionsville, 31-year-old Bulldog coach Brad Stevens is still referred to as, "LIttle Brad." That was before coach entered the room. Green fessed up before we had a chance to ask the coach about it. I think there's a few extra laps in Green's immediate future.

Green also told us that his second half spark was partially brought on by the encouragement of teammate Shawn Vanzant. Chuckling, he said, "he still thinks I can do no wrong, so he pulled me aside and told me to shoot more."

During the Valparaiso part of the press briefing, we got to see the unique style of coach Drew. He sat at the press conference with Loyd and Diebler and would occasionally deflect questions their way with, "What do you guys think? You were on the floor?" He was also impressed with the "gallantry" of his team.

He also displayed the typical short term memory of a coach, which extends one game. He pointed out how tough it is to win on the road in this league, saying, "no road team had won a game yet." That was almost right. The only team to win on the road in HL play so far is his, which was 2-0 on the road coming into today.

I've had a few occasions to chat with coach Drew in the past (I know his son Scott better), and I think I can say without fear of contradiction that he's the nicest guy in college basketball. That sentiment was shared in the press room after the game.

After they left, we (the press) were chuckling at the thought of Bobby Knight turning to his players and saying, "What do you think, boys?" And none of us could remember the last time we heard a coach refer to his team's "gallantry."

I've said this before, so I apologize if you have read it, but if every team was coached by a guy like Homer Drew, we wouldn't need an NCAA enforcement staff or encyclopedia-thick rule book. The game needs more Homer Drews.

Valparaiso-Butler Live Blog

INDIANAPOLIS -- Below is the live blog for today's game, but first, a few more pre-game notes.

Everybody knows about Butler. They have been on the national scene for a few years now, so here's a few things you may not have known about Valparaiso.

Coach Dr. Homer Drew is the ninth-winningest active coach.

Valpo fields a squad fit for the UN. They have five foreign players from four different countries, including two starters from Finland. The others are from Germany, Jamaica and New Zealand.
However, the guy with the most foreign-looking name on the team, Urule Igbavboa, is from Minnesota, which unlike Texas, is not a whole 'nother country.

G Brandon McPherson is from Indianapolis Lawrence North HS, and played alongside former Ohio St stars Michael Conley and Greg Oden. McPherson is a year older than those guys.

Probably the most famous guy in the house is Homer's son Bryce, who is the associate head coach. Bryce hit "the shot" to beat Mississippi in the 1998 NCAA tournament. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you have never watched the tournament.

Let the blogging begin!

Coming Attractions: Valparaiso at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS -- There is a big early-season tilt in the Horizon league tomorrow at 2 PM ET between league newbie Valparaiso, and the conference's "old money," Butler.

The upstart Crusaders lead the league in the early going after wins at Detroit and defending champ Wright St a month ago. That was part of a 10-1 start, which was a record in the 19-year Valpo career of coach Homer Drew. The Crusaders have come back to earth a bit since then, losing a hard-fought game at Wisconsin and then getting their doors blown off at #1 Carolina.

Butler is sitting at 1-1 in league play, with its lone loss coming at its usual nemesis, Wright St. The Bulldogs are 12-1 overall, including wins over Texas Tech, Ohio St and Florida St. They are coming off a win at Southern Illinois, which ended on an AJ Graves game-winning 30-footer at the buzzer.

While this is the first time that these two are meeting as Horizon foes, it is not the first time they have played each other in a conference game. Butler and Valpo used to be members of the Indiana Collegiate Conference thirty years ago.

For more bits and bobs about this game, you can check out the teams' game notes below, but first one more bit of Trivia. Valpo coach Drew's son Scott, the current head coach at Baylor, is a Butler grad. He was the team manager in 1992.

    Graves Saves Butler

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The play, by any other name, still felt so sweet.

A.J. Graves, Butler's leading scorer, broke free just enough to launch a running 25-footer from the left wing just ahead of the buzzer.

And when his shot bounced off glass and through the net, the No. 16 Bulldogs escaped with a 57-55 win over Southern Illinois on Friday night.

    Butler Downs Southern Illinois, 57-55

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A.J. Graves, who's been quiet most of the game, drained a 25-foot jumper just ahead of the buzzer and Butler pulled out a 57-55 win over Southern Illinois.

    Down The Strech

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Mike Green has seemed to have lost his stroke from the line, missing two free throws with just over a minute and a half left. On Southern Illinois' next foray, Randal Falker fed Wesley Clemons for a wide-open three. Butler called timeout with 37 seconds left in the game, 14 on their shot clock.

    Still Alive

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- After the referees reversed an on-ball call, giving possession to Southern Illinois, Josh Bone drained a three from the wing, and suddenly, SIU Arena has come back to life.

    Butler Gains Three-Point Lead

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Pete Campbell, from deep in the corner, knocked down a trey for Butler, but Randal Falker answered back with a jam for Southern Illinois. Mike Green has returned to the line to hit both free throws, and Butler now holds a three-point lead.

    Butler Misses Chance To Lead

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Butler just put a flurry of shots on net, only to be turned away by the noted tandem of Falker and iron. It's 47-47 with 3:30 to play.

Falker, Mullins Back In For SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- With Mike Green tying the game with a couple of more free throws, Southern Illinois got Falker and Mullins --four fouls each -- back into the game with 4:46 to play.

    Trouble Brewing For SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- With Randal Falker already on the bench with his fourth foul, SIU's Mullins just got called for a block. Mike Green hit both of his free throws, and with two key Salukis on the bench, Butler is back within one.

    Graves Showing Effort

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A.J. Graves may not be scoring for Butler, but he's working hard. He just drove all around the Southern Illinois defense, setting up Campbell for a wide-open look at the top of the key. Unfortunately, Campbell's shot went klunk.

    Falker Back On The Court

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Randal Falker is back. He got away with climbing over a Bulldogs' back for a rebound and got one of two free throws to fall. The next time down, he missed a short baby-hook. Southern Illinois' Shaw still can't hit from the outside, and with another timeout, it's Southern Illinois 45, Butler 42.

    SIU Crowd Getting Testy

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Every foul call in Butler's favor is resulting in a rain of derision upon the referees. Mullins bumped Howard down low and picked up his third foul. Howard hit one of two, and Southern Illinois is still on top by a deuce.

    More Breathers

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A Butler timeout, about 10 seconds of play and a Southern Illinois foul, and we've got ourselves an official timeout. Got to love the fast-paced sport of basketball...

    Bone Again For SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Josh Bone just drained another trey, this one putting SIU up, 44-39, and prompting a Butler timeout with 11:17 to go in the second half.

    Fay Goes Back To Bench

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Carlton Fay wrestles down Matt Howard and is astonished to have picked up his fourth foul. He's headed back to the bench now, too.

Falkers Goes Out With Third Foul

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Green got through the Southern Ilinois defense to set up Avery Jukes, but he couldn't convert on the resulting free throws. The foul, however, sends Randal Falker back to SIU's bench with his three.

    Another Timeout?

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Another "stirring" timeout contest has the home crowd at a loud murmur.Yawn.

Game still tied with 15:24 to play.

    Graves Sighting

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A.J. Graves found his way into the lane, only to miss an eight-foot fade. But the ball came right back to him, and he nailed a 10-footer.

Both teams are trading points in a 37-37 tie.

    Rock Fight Gets Going

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- It's a rock fight in the early going of the second half. Southern Illinois' Randal Falker just hit the side of the backboard on a jumper and Butler's Matt Howard missed a layup at the end of a fast-break.

SIU's Mullins finally figured out the rim for an old-fashioned three-point play, and after a Butler miss, Bone knocked down a three. SIU is back in front, and the crowd is back in the game.

    Battle Of The Benches

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois bench, a source of sorrow so far this season, is outscoring Butler's reserves, 8-6. Only Pete Campbell has come off the pine to score for the Bulldogs with two treys. SIU got six from former starter Tony Boyle and two from Carlton Faye.

Faye's line: Two points, three fouls and a rebound and two turnovers in four minutes. A so-so call by the refs on an offensive foul, however, has won him the pity of the home crowd.

At The Half: Butler 31, SIU 29

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- While new SIU football coach Dale Lennon plays to the crowd at the half, the stat sheets are being passed around.

Mike Green, with 10 points, and Matt Howard, with eight, lead Butler in scoring, while top gun A.J. Graves is just 1-for-6 from the floor with five points. Butler leads, 31-29.

Bone paces SIU with 10, most coming with key starters Falker and Mullins on the pine. Falker did have nine points and three boards in his 10 minutes.

Things bode well for the Bulldogs, who have scored 40-plus points in the second half of their last three games. That would put them in the 70s, and they have won 14 straight when they score 75 points or more.

    Fay Hit For Three Fouls

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois' heralded freshman Carlton Fay was nailed for two fouls on one possession, and the next time down the floor, was called for an offensive foul. The last one has the crowd howling at the refs.

Looks like it's going to be a short night for Fay.

    Missing In Action

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- At the last media timeout, Butler's leading scorer A.J. Graves has tallied just two points, and the Bulldogs are still only two points down. Mike Green has 10 at this point to pick up the slack.

    A Good Catch

CARBONDALE, Ill -- Mike Green tried to drive against Bone, but once he's gotten a lane to the hole, he's been cut off by Southern Illinois' Tony Boyle. Boyle caught Green and the ball in the same motion, which just resulted in a held-ball situation.

    Bone-ing Up

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Forget foul trouble. Southern Illinois' Josh Bone just drained two treys to tie the game. After a Butler miss, Wesley Clemons has added a deuce and the crowd is now rocking.

    Foul Trouble For Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Both forward Randall Falker and point guard Bryan Mullins have picked up their second personal fouls of the half, sending both to the bench. For a thin roster, that could mean trouble for Southern Illinois the rest of the half.

Meanwhile, the resulting free throws from Mike Green pushes Butler's edge to 21-15.

    Technical Woes

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Apparently, me and my computer are missing a hell of a game. My dang screen is taking up all my attention after losing my internet connection.

Meanwhile, back on the court, Butler leads Southern Illinois, 19-15, with a break in the action at 7:52 in the first half.

    Green With Envy

CARBONDALE, Ill -- Mike Green has just given Butler its first lead with a three-pointer out of the first media timeout. After trading hoops, the Bulldogs lead, 10-7.

    Personal Magnet

CARBONDALE. Ill. -- Southern Illinois' Randall Falker has drawn two fouls on one possession as the Salukis look to get him involved early. Still, at four minutes into the game, Falker has two points with the score tied at five.

    All Rise At SIU Arena

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- As is the tradition at SIU Arena, the crowd is on its feet and stomping, and will continue to stand until the opposing team scores its first points.

A near steal by Southern Illinois brings a groan and a renewal of the stomping. Butler ends its first posseission with a turnover. The seats are still unsat upon.

Josh Bone nails a 3-ball for SIU a little over a minute into the game.

A foul on SIU's Wesley Clemons sends Butler's Mike Green to the line. His first free throw puts the butts in the seats, but he misses the second.

    Home Cooking For Salukis

CARBONDALE,Ill. -- If Butler can run out of Carbondale with a win, it will be only the fifth team to do so in 87 games.
The last? Indiana, just 27 days ago. Like Indiana, Butler is ranked in the top 20 in both polls.

The Salukis did lose two home games in 200506 season, to Louisiana Tech and Indiana State.

Good Crowd On Hand For Butler-SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The crowd is still filing in as Miss Illinois gives a decent rendition of the National Anthem. Despite the fact that students are on Christmas break, the game sold out well before the gates opened. It should be the biggest crowd since Indiana rolled into town on Dec. 1.

    SIU Leaning On Its Bench

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois is looking for a bench to lean on instead of sit on.

The Salukis leaned heavily its starting lineup while experimenting with substitution combos. Wesley Clemons responded to his first start Dec. 22 against Western Kentucky with a career-high 24 points. That allowed Saluki coach Chris Lowery more scoring punch, and to bring Tony Boyle off the bench.

Other reserves are still fighting to find minutes. Only Brandon Wood and Tyrone Green, a part-time starter, are getting double-figure minutes.

    Butler Looking For Revenge

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Butler is making its first appearance at SIU Arena and faces the Salukis for only the third time ever.

The Bulldogs, ranked 16th by the AP poll and 17th by ESPN/Coaches, are looking to avenge a 68-64 loss last season in a BracketBuster contest at Hinkle Field House.

Butler is getting it done with balance, as four players have scored in double figures in their last three games. A.J Graves leads the way with 16.8 per game (Mike Green comes in at 14.7, Pete Campbell at 11.7 and Matt Howard at 11.5).

    Butler-Southern Illinois Pre-Game Notes

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- It's already been a busy day for Southern Illinois sports information director Tom Weber.

The Salukis named Dale Lennon as its new football coach in the afternoon. Lennon, formerly of the U of North Dakota, replaces Jerry Kill, who moved to Northern Illinois University earlier this month.

Lennon is being brought in to keep the Salukis among the national elite. Kill resurrected a stagnant program in his seven seasons, taking the Salukis to the FCS semifinals this season.

Lennon was 90-14 in nine years at UND, including five conference championships, seven playoff appearances and one Div. II championship.

    Florida State-Butler Post-Game Wrap-up

LEBANON, Ind. - Sorry this is late. They shut down the internet at Conseco Fieldhouse before I could write an update.

You may have noticed that my dateline has changed. Icy roads forced me to abandon my trip home, so I am now in Lebanon, Ind., which is about halfway between Indianapolis and Lafayette. It's also the home town of Purdue's all-time leading scorer, Rick Mount. It's a good thing Purdue played the first game or they wouldn't have made it home tonight.

    But, I digress.

First, a correction on the stats reported earlier. Florida State had 19 turnovers, not 23. Still, it was about a half a dozen too many.

Florida St shot 46.6 percent from the floor (27-for-58), but only 5-for-17 from three-point range. Take that out, and that's 54 percent from two-point distance. FSU killed Butler on the boards, 35-25, including 12 offensive rebounds, but the Bulldogs outscored the Seminoles from the free throw line, 20-9.

A.J. Graves' seven three-pointers is a Wooden Tradition record.

After the game, Butler coach Brad Stevens talked a lot about how his team dealt with losing to Wright State last time out and how they dealt with final exams. Stevens, who doesn't look a day older than his players, said that he expected a good effort from his team because "when final exams are over, there is such a relief, that the players come out with a high energy level."

He also talked about how it was nice to play near home for a change, although he referred incorrectly to this game as a neutral site game. Stevens said that his team traveled a total of 43 hours for its first 10 games, "so it was nice to travel 15 minutes each way, or 20 in the snow."

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton was effusive in his praise for Graves. He said that the 'Noles game plan for defending Graves was to go over the top of the screens and not let him get good looks, but that Graves was too "clever" for them. Hamilton said that Graves "is the best I've ever seen at using ball screens to get open."

Butler Finishes Off Florida State, 79-68

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Butler was able to force a few more turnovers and hit its free throws to put away Florida State, 79-68. A.J. Graves had a huge game with 25 points on 7-of-16 shooting from three-point range. Jason Rich had 17 and Ralph Mims had 16 to lead the Seminoles.

The key stat of the game was Florida State's 23 turnovers. The 'Noles shot reasonably well at 48 percent, but that's giving up a lot of opportunities.

I'll be back with more shortly, assuming I can get back downstairs through the mob.

    Butler Holding Tight

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- This has been a pretty ugly game, especially from the Florida State perspective, but the 'Noles are still hanging around. It's 63-56 at the last timeout. The teams have combined for 28 turnovers, and FSU has 17 of them, but when the teams hold on to the ball, they do reasonably well. Butler is still shooting 50 percent and FSU is at 46 percent. If the 'Noles can manage to get through the rest of this game without turning the ball over, they have a chance.

I spent a little time chatting with David Booth, a scout for the Memphis Grizzlies and former DePaul star. He's sitting next to me on the press row. As I said in an earlier post, he's not seeing much in terms of NBA prospects here, with the possible exception of Graves, who just buried another three.

With 2:20 left, it's Butler by four.

    Florida State Coming Back

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Right after the last timeout, Florida State went on a 7-0 run to cut Butler's lead to five. Jason Rich got another dunk, followed by Isaiah Swann's first points of the game and then a Toney Douglas three. Both teams have gotten a little sloppy with their passing. Florida State stole a bad pass and was rushing down on the break, but Douglas threw it right back to Butler.

    At the 10:17 mark, it's Butler 51-46.

Tonight's attendance was 17,170. The building seats 18,100. It's about half full now.

I'm sitting next to a scout for the Memphis Grizzlies. I don't think he's seeing a lot to report back.

    Butler Pulling Away

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Florida State's offense has gone stagnant and Butler is starting to pull away again. The Bulldogs now lead by 12 at the first TV timeout. FSU only has four points this half so far, both on Solomon Alabi layups.

    Butler Up At The Break

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Florida State is going to have to make some defensive adjustments at halftime if they hope to have any chance of getting back into this game. Butler is breaking them down too easily and getting too many good looks. As much as anything, that's why the Bulldogs are up 38-30 at the half and explains their 50 percent shooting percentage.

The odd thing about Butler's shooting percentage is that they are only 6-for-17 from three-point range, but 8-for-11 from inside the arc. A.J. Graves leads the Bulldogs with 14 points.

Florida State isn't shooting badly (48 percent) but isn't as productive on the long ball (1-for-6). Jason Rich has 11 points to pace FSU, and Butler is having trouble containing him right now.

The crowd has thinned out a bit with many of the Louisville fans in particular heading home. Butler has a good contingent here, but I have only seen a handful of FSU fans. We were told in the post-game press conference that despite the bad weather, the attendance will be a near-sellout.

    Rich, Mims Leading FSU Comeback

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Florida State is on a 6-0 run thanks to a Ralph Mims put back and two Jason Rich dunks. FSU is picking up its pressure on defense and got a couple of turnovers to help key this little run. When Butler has had time to set up in the half court, they have been able to break the Seminoles down and get good shots, but the Bulldogs have been sloppy with the ball at times.

Butler's lead is now down to 27-23 at the four-minute timeout.

    Butler Still Hot

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Butler leads at the eight-minute timeout by a score of 25-17 thanks to 55 percent shooting from the floor. Graves and Mike Green are both 3-for-5 from the floor, with Graves hitting all threes and Green all twos.

Nobody is really standing out for Florida State so far. Toney Douglas, Ralph Mims and Jason Rich have four points each. The 'Noles leading scorer, Isaiah Swan, has yet to score in part because he's sitting with two fouls.

    Butler Up Early

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Sorry for the delay. The post-game press conferences took awhile. In particular, there's a guy who covers Purdue that likes to hear himself talk, which sort of drags things on.

Butler is up, 22-14, on Florida State at the second timeout thanks in part to two A.J. Graves three-pointers.

Butler is 18th ranked in the AP poll but coming off a loss to Wright State in conference play. Butler is without the services of Pete Campbell again today. Campbell is the team's second leading scorer at 14.1 points per game.

Florida State is team schizophrenia so far this year. They have losses to Big East bottom-feeder USF and Horizon league bottom-feeder Cleveland State. But the Seminoles have also beaten Minnesota, Florida and UAB and have won six straight overall. The 'Noles have not played in the state of Indiana since 1998. They played Butler at Hinkle that season.
