Home Sweet Home

Hello from the JetBlue terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, everybody. I have returned from my whirlwind tour of media days in ECAC Hockey, Hockey East and Atlantic Hockey, although the biggest news of my trip involved the CHA.

As you've probably read by now, Wayne State is folding its program, and I got the news while at Blue Cross Arena as Media Day was winding down.

Of course, the news of a porgram folding is something that you never want to hear as a college hockey fan, but as a writer, it's the sort of news best heard when you're in a room full of coaches, athletic directors and a comissioner. Quotes from those individuals can be found in my article about the move, but here are a few thoughts from me, your humble correspondent:

Atlantic Hockey: A Definite Improvement

Good morning from Rochester, everyone, as I'm at Blue Cross Arena for Atlantic Hockey Media Day.

There's a lot of activity going on right now, including what I think is the longest speaking program of any conference media day in the east, but here's a few quick hits.

Yes, Baltimore

Greetings from the Greene Turtle at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, everybody. It may be an unlikely connection from Boston to Rochester - thank you, AirTran - but it's a fairly appropriate one, since as we prepare to begin another college hockey season, it's good to remember that college hockey started in Baltimore.

And so did I, having been born in this fair city a few minutes after midnight on January 7, 1982.

But enough about me...here are a few more observations on Hockey East Media Day.

Hockey East: A Banners Day

Good afternoon from Logan Airport, all, where I'm waiting for a flight that will take to me to Rochester (eventually...more on that from my next stop). I was at Hockey East Media Day earlier today, which was held at Banners restaurant at the KurtCenter (better known to many of you as TD Banknorth Garden).

The official business is in my notebook column, which will be up on CSTV.com shortly. But while I'm sitting here, let's have a little bit of fun, shall we?

Final ECAC Thoughts

Hey all. My bus is stopped in Worcester, where the city has free wi-fi - not to mention great press meals for NCAA regionals - so I have a few more thoughts for you from ECAC Hockey Media Day.

ECAC Hockey: It Has Begun

All the coaches are here, the members of the media are in their seats, and we are officially under way in Albany.

ECAC Hockey: Here We Go...

Good morning from Albany, everyone. I'm on the concourse of the Times Union Center, where ECAC Hockey Media Day is set to begin in about 45 minutes. My fellow scribes are making their way in, and right now everything is very low key.

A few notes before we get started.

A Fitting Honor

I haven't had much to write on women's hockey lately, but this is a real pleasure to get to write.

Cammi Granato is getting her just desserts.

Ask a Silly Question...

What do Andrew Cogliano, David Rohlfs, Jacob Micflikier, Colin McDonald, Geoff Paukovich and Glenn Fisher have in common?

Yes, I know, they're all former college hockey players who are rookies in the Edmonton Oilers organization.

They were also all part of a loss to the University of Alberta last week.

Family Reunion

It's a light news day, but that makes for good family time, which is apparently on its way to West Point in the near future.

Badger Banter

By now, if you're reading this, you've probably read my column on Kyle Turris in the Super Series, featuring commentary from Wisconsin head coach Mike Eaves.

However, the Badger bench boss had a bit more to say than I could fit into the column, including some comments on Wisconsin's occasionally maligned style of play.

Talking Back

I'm in the offices at CSTV.com today, helping to hold things down on a very full day of action. However, while all the football has been fun to watch, it hasn't yielded much in the way of hockey-related insights, except for wondering why Tom Izzo was tapped to introduce Michigan State's starters in the MSU-Pitt game instead of the coach who won a national championship this year, Rick Comley.

In any case, there's more interesting material out there, like what you have to say...

Giving A Damn About The Whole State Of Michigan

I'm generally not one to drop names - something my good friend Lee Stempniak of the St. Louis Blues would certainly attest to - but this entry starts with my running into noted baseball and boxing analyst Bert Sugar the other night.

Crossing Borders

Let's see, we've got Canada and Russia finishing up the Super Series, the USHL and the QMJHL at the CCM junior classic, and me having just gotten back from my cousin's Bar Mitzvah in Ottawa.

At this rate, maybe I should have focused more on International Relations when I majored in government in college...

Waking Up Sleeping Dogs

No big Kyle Turris news this evening - the Wisconsin freshman was held off the scoresheet Wednesday in Canada's 4-1 win over Russia in Game 6 of the Super Series - but I'm going to be in Canada this weekend for a family event, and have every intention of being in front of a TV at 10 p.m. ET to watch Game 7 from start to finish. However, I have something to say that involves another Minnesota rival.

At the risk of offending the Gopher fans - because everyone knows I have it in for them (ha ha ha) - I had a thought this evening on the subject of gargantuan upsets.

More For the Kyle File

Yes, there are over 1200 current NCAA Division I men's hockey players, and only one of them is named "Kyle Turris." However, Kyle's the only one who's playing official games right now, so who do you think I'm going to talk about?

And no, I have no intention of discussing the Matt Greene-Geoff Paukovich incident out in Alberta, not after having seen what a wasteland the comments section of Brad Elliott Schlossman's excellent North Dakota blog has turned into.

So, Turris it is...

What I Learned Out On The Road

There are 24 days until the first college hockey game on the 2007-08 season, and yet it feels like there's so little going on.

While we're waiting for Kyle Turris and the Canadian junior team to play Game 5 of the Super Series this evening, here are a few thoughts that have been kicking around the old noggin...
